Expand a service end of vPC linked clone disc

vShield Manager 5.0.2 - 791471

Version of VMware Tools 8.6.15 build 2495133

The image of Windows 7 has 2 discs of interest:

C:\ OS (provided slim 30 GB)

Profile of user D:\ (10 GB persistent independent disk)

The issue is that the C drive is 30 GB thin Provision in total, with 6 GB of free space.  I have disabled disk defragmentation, System Restore is 3% (900 MB).

The only thing that is installed are the Windows updates on patch Tuesday.  The programs we use are static they don't really change.

So no new installations of any kind except updates of Java and Adobe.  I have install a piece of software once a year.

Users do not have the rights to install the software on their virtual machine.

I regularly run cleaning disc for drive C, but is that not a lot of space is recovered.

I would like to extend the C drive of the 30 GB, but the option is grayed out for the vPC (see screenshot).

I went into the display of VMware administrator to see if I can expand the C drive on impossible to locate the area where I can expand it.

I do not see the area where I can expand the persistent drive, but not for the OS disk.

The plan was to extend the OS disk, then recompose the specific office according to the needs arise.

Can you please indicate if it is possible to extend the 30 GB VMware View operating system?
This vPC is also a linked clone

Unfortunately Yes. Alternatively, you can create a complete clone of the current state of the virtual machine and use it as a new basic disk. This can not only be faster than to delete all snapshots, but also allows you to maintain the State of the current virtual machine in case you need more later.

I ended up using a vCenter customization specification to achieve this.  It turns out that the specification is as a safety net that will configure everything that is defined in the specification, unless there is a custom property configured on the action plan for this setting.  If this is the case, the custom property takes precedence.

  • Cannot expand the hard drive of a virtual computer that is a linked clone.

I have a virtual machine that is a linked another clone.

I did a lot of development and changes to the linked clone, and now ran out of disk space.

Now I want to extend the drive, but I get this error:

"Disks of virtual machines that are linked clones cannot be extended.

So I then try to extend the drive of the virtual machine that he was cloned from:

What can I do? If I remove the snapshots of the original machine, do not lose the 'link' to the linked clone? What he suggested that I use the "VMWare vcenter converter" for?

    Does anyone have a solution?

    Kind regards

  • Best practice help to spend again vCenter with linked Clones

    Hello everyone

I searched for days, but couldn't find a way clear of hover over our view 5.2 installation of a new vCenter.  The equipment was aging, and we decided to upgrade and move to 5.5.

We have rebuilt and forwarded via our guests not VDI to the new vCenter 5.5 environment. I found a few documents, but nothing that tells us if it can be done actually.

We tried to go in the service of the composer initially to the new instance of vCenter and maintenance, we do the DB on the old Victoria Cross, if it worked I émigrerait the DB above the new Victoria Cross

We first tried these steps however VMware Documentation Library after removing the old VC service composer and installed on VC New (with ODBC connections mapped to the old VC) it wouldn't work.  We were moving to the VC 5.1 leaving guests ESXi running VDI attached to 5.1

Then I did more research and discovered the related clones are all related to the database of the old VC and moving them is not possible per this KB KB VMware: workstations managed by moving between servers view vCenter is not supported

I saw an article here that suggested dumping a bunch of DB and rebuild the new VC with the same name and IP address, but I can't do so because the new instance is already upwards and on a new host name / IP migrate view VCenter (with linked Clones) to new hardware

I also found this where someone is in the same boat and suggested to recreate pools.  The discussion is not in the details so I wonder if someone can clarify this: migration View Composer and vCenter

I have about 20 people on VDI in a combination of clones using 3 connected pools and personal drives.  Given that all the info from linked clone was linked to the former base of VC, it doesn't seem wise to move it to the wire.  This would be possible: I still have the base image with all the snapshots for each pool.

    • Persistent backup drives
    • Note the configuration of each pool
    • Disable the commissioning
    • Create DB on VC 55 composer vacuum
    • Create the ODBC connection for composer on VC 55
    • **
    • Do more ESXi hosts to 55 VC
    • Remove existing VMs (will be not able to connect to them at this point anyway)
    • Remove the old VC entry admin view / delete existing pools
    • Install the composer on 55, and then tap new ODBC
    • Create new instance vCenter in Admin 55-pointing mode
    • Recreate pools
    • Import and attach persistent disks (http://pubs.vmware.com/view-50/index.jsp?topic=/com.vmware.view.administration.doc/GUID-BDFCCEC8-682F-4421-8810-06108CBE8D20.html)
    • Recreate events empty DB on 55
    • Reconfigure the parameter DB events in Admin mode

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I can't find an exact way to do

Well, I'm pleased to say it worked! I had a few problems by removing existing pools. View repeated deletion but nothing happened. In the end I had to use ADSIedit to connect to the server to manually remove all the old discs VM and pool

After the installation of the composer on the VC 5.5, I was able to create a login in admin mode and then start to re - create the pools.

We were able to successfully reattach each disc persistent owners planned.  Did some spot checks and desktop users, bookmarks etc. all worked

It is a tedious process, but it does not work. I hope that VMware can create an article for it.  God knows that I searched for days, I had to read a lot of things just for this plan.

I'm trying to create Clone bound using vSphere Web services api (c#) and it always end like full clone.

I know that vShpere supports version 2.5 VIClient. vShpere has the ability to create Linked clone.

I try to know why it does not create Linked clone from my environment.

Yes, you can vMotion Linked Clones... sVmotion may work, but I have not tested, probably not a good idea to move them.

    Hello

    1. are you able to hear the sound after the error message?

    2. you have an an external sound card or internal, installed on the computer?

    Method 1:

I suggest you to follow the steps and check.

    (a) click Start

    (b) type services.msc in the search box, and then press enter.

    (c) scroll down to Windows Audio and Windows Audio endpoint builder of Point

    (d) both should be started and set to automatic if one or both are arrested.

    (e) click the name to select it.

    (f) click on restart the service at the top left.

    (g) repeat for both if necessary. If some are not set to automatic, and then double-click the name and on the drop-down list to set the startup type to automatic and apply and ok your way out.

  • Force linked Clones to check the live servers to KMS for Activation

    Hi all.

Apparently, linked clones will check the KMS server that was used to activate their master gold.

(Centre of Documentation of VMware View 5.0) - Note This is display 5 documentation, but we use 6.1 view now.

" For the approval of KMS, View Composer uses the KMS server that is configured to activate the virtual machine parent. »

It is a problem if the KMS is taken out of service, or generally a problem - all the linked clones fail to activate.

How can we prevent the clones related to use the same KMS server?

How can we get the clones related list and choose the first KMS server, which is returned by the DNS SRV records?

    Thank you

    Update:

High level of the DNS entry works very well.

    • We have added a DNS record called kms.domain.com that uses repetition alternate for our KMS server two.
    • We made the VM Golder Master point to the folder. slmgr.vbs /skms kms.domain.com:port
    • We rode to the top of some related clones.
    • Check where the clones linked when pointing to slmgr.vbs /dlv- both pointing the DNS record and not a specific server.
    • Made a second activation and performed a capture of packets at the same time slmgr.vbs /ato

We found that the clones related to different servers and respond accordingly.

The same thing can be done with office by using the ospp.vbs script (although different switches).

  • VMware View Linked Clone pool - SID change of virtual machines

    Dear community

This morning I had the good idea to use instead of quickprep sysprep to change the SID for all virtual machines in the linked clone pools. Why? Because the customer didn't only VMs and use KMS to activate Office and Windows, therefore at least 50 different sid. Well, I created a file of OS customization invited for Windows (OS is Windows 7) in vCenter (which is connected to view admin) and I did:

    Target Machine Virutal OS: Windows

Use custom Sysprep answer file: No.

Name: The name of the file

    Owners name: xy

    Owner organization: xy

    Diabate

VM name: Use the virtual computer name

    ProductKey: Leave blank

    Admin password: play twice

    ZimeZone: GMT + 1

    Run once: no

    Network: Typical with DHCP

    Domain: Credentials client area incl.

Operating system options: create new SID

Finishing, went to view Admin has created a new and Cust comments. to Syprep (Filename). Blended at the pool and it worked very well until the generalization starts... it stucks at regional settings, when I restart the same. When I klick net he asks me for a computer name and a password.

    Well:

    (1) why is this block here? Yes there are still stuck because I was not able to specify a locale, or if it is not needed? Why he can pop up?

    (2) why he asks me for a computername? I told her to use an existing one.

    (3) why he asks me a password? I told her what to use.

Well I toigh ok Let's use an answwer sysprep file that I've included a second cost of comments. file (withi the guest also reset SID). Well it works greate except the designation: I said in the answer file to use the variable % computername %, which is certainly the name of the master, so VDI does not change this name...

    (1) the sysprep answer file the rightway anyway?

    (2) how do I get the new name out of sight for the VM for example VM001 instead of Master001

So let's see the unattend.xml file

If I check the comments cust. file without sysprep answer file I see there function which can crreate names for VMS as vim.virtualmachinenamegenerator (or something like that) is it possible to use sysprep as well? Well at the end, I just want to change the SID of the virtual machines each time they recompose is to have enough unique SID in the network! How do I need to do?

    Best regards

Duke is your main reason for the use of sysprep to work around the problem of SIDS?

We only use VDI on site for 700 + users and clients windows 7 and Office 2010 is activated through KMS.and we use quickprep because his headache free and easy.

I use the following to help with the problem of SIDS:

Manually to increase the number of KMS. Think Digital the application is clean.

Its very well explained in the link above.

  • Impossible to change the wallpaper in the linked Clone desktops

    Hello

I have a weird problem with a client running Horizon view 6.0.1:

In linked Clone desktops, we are unable to change the desktop background. We have created a new master without optimizations that I thought one of them already could be the problem (we removed the design etc. but just to get that optimizations).

I can change the wallpaper in the master image without problems, but not in the deployed workstations. If I click on other models, I see more active design Aero, the colors change from window etc, but the background remains the standard image of blue windows ("harmony"). Even if I select the images from the Explorer, right-click, as wallpaper - no change.

Anyone has the same problem and can lead to a solution?

P.S.: We use management Persona. But I have already created a pool in an OU without management of Persona and still have the same problem.

    Best regards

    Thomas

    Reg load "hku\temp".
    «% USERPROFILE%\ \Default User\NTUSER.» DAT '.

    reg delete "hku\temp\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System".

  • Difference in size of the Parent unit and linked clone

    Hi team,

I do view Vsphere 5.2 implementation Horizon. Implementation goes smoothly, but I saw a c disk space difference of Parent and Linked clone.

Windows 7 with Service pack 1 built with optimization script to disable unwanted services. Free space on the drive c image parent is 3.90 Go. When I put in service a clone related in this snapshot of parent picture I found free space in linked clone vdi is about 6.5 GB.

Please specify if anyone face the same or it is normal in the linked clone.

    Thank you

    Ravindra.

You use a disposable disc?    When you use a disk file page flies on this disc which may explain the difference in free space.

  • Using Linked clones with a data disc?

We expect on the creation of our BASE image with a 50 GB C:\ drive.  For the moment, we will not use Thinapp, so the few apps we need for our people call center will be installed on the base image. We also plan to use the profile unit of Liquidware Labs and will use linked Clones.  My question is, do I have to create a data disc (D:\) to install Apps or just expand the C:\ drive?

If the user data (documents, computers of desktop, thems and local profiles) will store locally and needed to preserve for the future and use the redirection of the user's data and set separate drive for this.

In the case where the user data is Vagabond (stored and shared in the Center), then do not use that feature, simply create a bigger drive C.

  • Activation of Windows 7 with linked clones

Hi all, I know that this has been discussed in previous posts, but I think I need some clarification. We use View 4.6 and I noticed that, in some cases (not all the time) when someone connects to your desktop of Windows 7 linked clone the message 'Windows is now activated' appears in the lower right. Other times I check and said BONE it will be self-activated in 3 days.

The main image has been activated using our key to activate Multiple (MAK), and we do not have a Service (KMS) key management server.

    According to this KB article http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1026556

We are encouraged to move to a system of authorisation KMS on the master server. Here are my questions...

    1. what happens if I do nothing and we run out of activations? Someone wouldn't have to be connected for 3 days for the timeout to occur? It seems to turn on only when someone connects (AFAIK). What is when to start the countdown 3?

    2. what happens if we change the option in the registry (AllowActivateMAKLicense) to activate QuickPrep activate using MAK? Everyone does, what are the advantages and disadvantages.

    3. what happens if I change the SkipLicenseActivation registry entry? It's basically what I'm doing now and let Windows activate itself when someone connects?

    4. If I should not pass master image to use a KMS how to do that? I wouldn't have to rebuild the image from scratch.

5 is there any difference between using the "Refresh" vs "Delete" option pool after disconnect in what concerns the way the OS license is activated? If I update will keep the activated license?

    Thank you

    Brian

Actually, we had a similar problem as you with our base images. We built the images with the MAK and after that, it was discovered the problem in doing so. You can also change the types of licenses in your images in database easily. Try this page for more information: How to use the Volume Activation Management Tool or tool VAMT | The Windows Club

This tool is very good in what it can tell you what type of licenses that you use MS product to you and you can use it to change the keys.

  • Linked clone provisioned storage

I have an image master win7, I am deploying in a linked clone floating pool.  My main image is 32 GB.  When I create pools, each of the reports linked clones in vCenter they have 66 gb is put into service.  What is the origin of the vCenter to think he has 66 s gb available? Administrator-display report data store real used space or report that if all maxed out at 32 GB vm, this amount of space would be absorbed?

    Thanks for any idea

    Hello

This occurs when the virtual machine has a snapshot.

Is total disc space implemented parent parent and child, where everyone can develop in real space specified when the disk was created.

It also adds the swap space necessary for the virtual machine, which is equal to the RAM.

This is a discussion on this

In the case of the space used for the linked clone, you must add replica + OS UDD + disc + other misc files VM file, swap file

    Thank you

  • Complete clone of a linked Clone does not work

    Hello world

I'm trying to generate a complete clone of a clone related with snapshot (power off). I am able to start the clone wizard and check the full clone option radio button. Even the cloning process works without any problem. But in the end the clone resulting is again a linked clone. I tried a few things to get a full clone without success.

    VMware Workstation 7.1.3 build-324285

    Windows 7 Professional (host)

I'm happy to believe that it is a bug. But maybe someone can help you.

to produce a complete clone of a linked clone use vmware-vdiskmanager

    VMware-vdiskmanager - r current-connected - clone.vmdk - t 0 fullclone.vmdk

I can reproduce this behavior here - it really looks like a bug.

At least he is not what he says he'll do
