Expand or move the virtual machine to another partition / hard disk

I tried to expand my 90 GB disk but nothing changes, i.e. the virtual machine is still to 60 GB. I have VMware Fusion 6 (Mac/Windows 10) and my VM is monolithic mode. In this true HD, I even 50 GB free and I can't increase the amount again in an attempt to rectify this problem and I can not to decrease either. I thought to change the location of the virtual machine to another partition/hd with more space, but I don't know how. So I need little help to choose and implements one of the solutions below:

- or regularise space for the new amount

- or move the virtual machine (vmdk) to an another partition/HD

- or to convert monolithic mode to 2 GB split

What is the best solution?

Thanks in advance

It's help me;

Resize a Windows Partition with disk management tool

When you maximize your virtual hard disk, you must also expand partition of your guest operating system to take advantage of the extra space.

Fusion resizes the partition of the guest operating system when you resize the virtual hard disk. If you hold the Option key when you click apply to resize the drive, you can manually resize the Windows partition. For Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Vista you can use the operating system's disk management tool to resize a partition.

Prerequisites

Check that your virtual hard disk is large enough to accept the increase in the size of the partition. See resize a hard disk.

Procedure

1 right click on computer and select Manage.

2. double-click on storage.

3 double-click disk management.

4 in the list, right click on the partition to expand and select Extend the Volume.

5 follow the prompts to resize the partition and click complete and the question of the partition in the disk management pane displays its new size.

6. close the computer management window

  • Cannot move the virtual machine to another host

Here's the situation... I am running 3 ESX 4.0 host in a cluster and I upgrade the memory on these hosts.  I put one day and now I want to use vmotion to move a virtual machine to host more memory, so I can then turn off host 2 to add more memory.

When I try to migrate the computer to another virtual host he said "the virtual machine must be powered down for that purpose."

I did it before with success when I first created this group with the HA and DRS settings are enabled.

Now, I can't do this and I don't know what setting or what changed to cause it to not allow me to manually migrate a virtual computer on one host to another.

If I wanted to put an ESX host in "Maintenance Mode" thinking that it will automatically move all VM for 2 other hosts in the cluster is not it either... I get a message saying that ' a host into maintenance mode does not any virtual machine functions... blah... blah... and continues to complete the entry into maintenance mode, all virtual machines must be closed or moved to another host. "  Manual intervention may be required.

Again, I think that if a host is down these VMs would be move... that of the whole point of a cluster but doesn't seem to put in maintenance mode to allow them to go unless I turn off the virtual machine

    Any ideas?

Go is one of the requirements of vMotion. The message after you had corrected the condition, I'm sure would be erased after awhile.

  • Move the virtual machine in another data store

I don't know what's going on, I have two data warehouses and I moved my vm from one to the other, I had to create a new virtual machine to import the files migrated, when I opened the store of data for import only saw two files vmdk files, the first 00001 others a single vmdk file that contains 00 001 not opened when you import the second succeeded, but when the server starts, it goes up a very old version, as if it was newly installed windows 2003, I saw in the dishes, delta files files but don't know what to do, I tried to check the Snapshot Manager, but did not find anything there.

Have you ever tried to fix things? The attached .vmx file points to the correct instant hard file (scsi0:0.fileName = "Cezzanne - 000001.vmdk"), but the parentCID in this hard file is not correct!

In any case, after replacing "Cezzanne - 000001.vmdk" with that of archive attached, you should be able to restart the virtual machine. BTW. You can delete the file «.lck...» ». This is necessary on a NFS datastore.

Next time you copy a VM, do not create a new virtual machine. Only delete the virtual machine to inventory before moving and after moving it, click right the VM .vmx file and choose "add to the inventory.

How to move the virtual machine from one cluster to another cluster

  • How to move a virtual machine to another store of data on the same host

    Hello

I have a single ESX4 host with 3 data warehouses and I need to move a virtual machine to another data store, how can I do that since I don't have the ability to migrate the virtual machine when I am connected directly to the client with vSphere host and I do not have a server vCenter also?

    Thanks, Julien

    Hello

    Yes, you can use #vmkfstools-i /vmfs/volumes/datastore/VM/VM.vmdk /vmfs/volumes/datastore/VM1/VM1.vmdk

For the record, the data store must be shared if you copy of VM and VM must be turned off. In the above command you copy VM.vmdk to VM1.vmdk and add the newly created with this existing VMDK VM.

  • How can I move the Virtual Mode of Windows XP hard drive to another drive

How can I move the Virtual Mode of Windows XP hard drive to another drive?

    TIA

    Hi Benyl,

The vhd in programfiles basis cannot be moved or renamed, if done, xp mode stops at the start.

To move the files under c, first to boot xp, instead of save mode the machine virtual., turn it off. (settings to prompt the user for action narrow close). Close the machine virtual., and then choose stop. This will remove the vsv file. Do not delete the .vsv file because it contains data if you have not registered in the virtual machine.

Now, move it "C:\Users\CHRIS.domainname\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows virtual PC\Virtual Machines\Windows XP Mode.vhd" to a desired location.

Parameters of xp mode open, go to the hard drive 1 setting and reposition the hard drive to the new location of the vhd. You should now be able to start the virtual machine.

  • Move the virtual machines to new storage device

I recently added a storage IBM DS3200 SAS device to my VMware ESX 3.5 server.  I am running 6 VMs locally on the server and I would like to move the virtual machines to the new storage device.  I have formatted disks and the ESX Server sees.  What is the best way to move the virtual machines that currently reside locally on the external storage device?

  • Move the virtual machine from one host to another with shared storage

    Hello

I have a question on how to move a virtual machine from one ESX 4 host to a host ESXi 5.  These hosts have access to the same shared storage but the ESX 4 host is outside the network and host ESXi 5 is inside the network so vMotion is not an option.  They are in different groups.  I know that there must be an easy way to move this virtual machine, but for the life of me, I can't find it.  I guess I have remove the virtual machine from the external cluster but how to make the virtual machine in the internal cluster?

    Thanks in advance...

If both host access to the data store even where VM's store, just stop the virtual machine, remove inventory on ESXi 4, go to ESXi 5 vSphere vSphere, browse the data store where the VM is stored, do a right-click on the .vmx file and add to the inventory.

  • How to move the virtual machine from one host to another?

The two boxes under ESXi 5.0 (hypervisors freely licensed).

I have a virtual machine (FreeBSD) that I need to go to another box.

Network ports are not the same, but I guess that's not a biggie to reconfigure the network cards. Other than that, I have to follow a few best practices/SOPS or copy & paste is everything I need to run perfectly on a different host?

    Thank you very much!

FastSCP allows you to copy directly between hosts, so it can save a lot of time you copy.  I don't know what you mean by 'manually' copy files.  Do you mean using the vShpere client and download the files to a location then download them to the new host?  Either way works perfectly, but FastSCP you must save a step.

If you have currently snapshots, you can consolidate first or leave em and just copy them with the rest of the virtual machine. There should be no need to do something with snapshots, if you perform a migration 'offline '.  As long as you take all the files, snapshots will be displayed on the destination host computer when you save the vm on the host.

I did 'on-line' migration of large virtual machines first to the take a snapshot on the source host, copy basic to the first destination host disks while the virtual machine was still running on the source host.  When I was ready to migrate the CPU processing, I power off the virtual machine, copy the other files (which would include the deltas from disk and whatnot) and turn on the vm on the destination host (which would cause only a few minutes of downtime).  Later, I consolidate records by removing the snapshot on the destination host.  Way to a poor man to do a migration of vm on ESXi free edition with little downtime.

  • Move the virtual machine from one host to another ESXi

    Hi all

Quick question, if I wanted to move a virtual machine hosted on a server ESXi ESXi server what is the easiest way? Should I use the converter to do?

    Thank you

    ESXi 4.1 (Vsphere Hypervisor)

So have free Vmware Vsphere Client

In this case, the options are:

    • Standalone converter
    • Browser data store (download and transfer files)
    • SCP or FastSCP and then add the virtual machine to inventory with the browser data store
  • How can I move the "Virtual Machines" folder to the My Documents folder?

VMwareFusion is to put the "Virtual Machines" folder in the Documents folder in the home folder (/users/ [username] / Documents), how can I move elsewhere (as/Library/Application Support)? The user Documents folder is not the right place for automated it system files, it is intended for personal documents.

I am running VMware Fusion on OS X Yosemite (and the virtual machine is Windows 7).

You can keep your virtual machines anywhere you want. Here are the steps to move:

1 exit VMware Fusion. You can stop first of all of your running virtual machines.

    2. drag your virtual computers folder or the individual VM "files" where you / them. Filenames usually end in ".vmwarevm". There is no need to call the new folder "Virtual Machines" - you can call it anything you like.

    3. Launch VMware Fusion. If the library of the Virtual Machine window is not open, open it (Windows menu-> Virtual Machine library).

    4. ensure that all of your icons for the virtual machine are light gray and say "file not found".

    5. right click on each virtual machine in turn, and select Remove. When you are done, leave the window of Machine virtual library empty open.

    6. in the Finder, drag the icons of file virtual machine in their new location and drop them in library of virtual machines VMware Fusion window. Drop them one by one in the original order, you got, or rearrange icons later.

    7. run your virtual machines as before.

When you create new virtual computers, navigate to the desired file before the Save.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you your folder of Machines ~/Documents/Virtual excluded from backups Time Machine, don't forget to change the exclusion to the new folder.

Time Machine backups are not reliable for virtual machines. You must have another strategy. (I shut the virtual machine down, compress the 'file', and then move the compressed file to a folder that is included in the Time Machine backups. This isn't the only strategy, but it works for me.)

  • How to move the Virtual Machine VMWare Workstation 10 to a completely different computer

I have a laptop that is going to become my 'old' laptop, I bought and am always set up a new computer.

I have a VM THAT evolution created on the 'old' portable using VMWare Workstation 10.  I installed the software VMWare Workstation 10 on the new laptop computer and am ready to move to the existing VM development since the old laptop again to continue the development of software on the virtual machine to the new machine.

I never moved a computer virtual from one computer to another, and I guess that all I have to do is to copy and move the folder and all its content from the old laptop to the new, and then I'll be back in business?

Just make sure it is this simple before doing so.

    Thanks for any input.

It's as simple as that. When you start in the new machine, it should ask if you copied or moved. Answer that you moved it will keep the same MAC address and you will not be able to connect the two copies at the same time. You copied it saying assigns a new MAC and they both can connect, but a Windows machine can ask to reactivate. Seems to me he asked also to reactivate when I copied it for an Intel system AMD system, but it was a long time ago

  • How to move a virtual machine to another host ESXi running when HA vCenter is not operational... !

    Hey

We have a few guests of ESXi running the 5.0.0 original version and some running the latest 5.1 U1 or whatever and the last vCenter to do this too.

the vCenter server is one of the hosts running 5.0.0 and these do not allow HA either active correctly. The problem is a known bug, and you switch to maintenance mode and do funky stuff on the cli to make it work. However, I just want to spend all my virtual machines off the old 5.0.0. hosts and on the new, as the 'old' will be dismantled. I can do all virtual machines by just when close them down and moving off, but I won't be able to do this in with the vm off vCenter vCenter!

can I turn off, connect directly to the ESXi host, remove it its inventory (this option exists even on the ESXi host live?) and save it to the new 5.1.0 host U1 and fire?

vCenter complain or fail when she returns to the top?

they share all the same warehouses of data, so I need to move the backend.

    thoughts?

    Thank you

    Roger

HA and vMotion (i.e. live migration) are two different things and are independent of each other, so if vMotion is configured correctly, you should be able to migrate the virtual machines (including the vCenter Server VM) to another host.

  • Move the virtual machine to the workstation from 9 to 7 Workstation

    Hi all

I have created a virtual machine (PBX) on VMWare Workstation 9 and I need to move it to Workstation 7.1.  I tried to create an ovf file using ovftool, but I couldn't expand the FVO on the side 7.1.  Is there anything else I can do to move the machine to the course?

    Thanks for your time.

    Martin

"You can just copy the file to the virtual machine with all its files, this will keep even the machine virtual UUID and MAC address if you select 'I moved' we ' when you start the virtual machine after you have copied. However, before copy on the virtual machine, make sure that you go to compatibility mode (formerly hardware version) from the 9 VMware Workstation interface.

  • Move a virtual machine in another data store

    Hello

On our ESX 4, we have created pools of resources and multiple data on SAN warehouses.

To move that a VM resource with Betclic is very easy, but howto move a virtual machine from a to another data store?

If I understand your question you should migrate your VM to the different data store.

Right-click on a virtual machine, select migrate..., select Change location of data, select the desired data store, select virtual disk format (end/thick)...
