External drive

I have Satellite A60 772 and you bought an external hard drive from Seagate. I want to install Win XP on it and copy the files to my Toshiba, then format and install Linux. But is it possible to boot from the external drive (I wish I could choose between Win (on Ext.Disk) and Linux (on Toshiba HardDisk)?) How?

You will need to partition your internal drive and load it with data from starting for two software, then it should work very well. You cannot have just two separate and different software running off a HARD drive.

  • Starts the Powerbook g3 pismo of the external drive?

    Hello, all,.

I want to start my Powerbook G3 (Pismo) running OS 9.2.2 since the restore in one disc external hard drive. (PB knows he has a drive hard internal , but the drive does not read discs in there.) The computer goes up the disc - its own restore disk - when it comes starts with Macintosh HD as a player start, but when I try to use the restore disc as commissioning, starts to drive to go up, but the door opens. Even if I hold the door closed, the computer starts low to halfway and glued in place: first, the question mark flashing, then commissioning with Macintosh HD but then freeze it.

This happens even if I chose as the startup disk restore disk in the startup configuration panel. This means that I can't even begin to use disk utility to clean the hard drive of the computer. I did that with two other computers (reset several times), but those who had internal functioning disks. Is it possible that I can do this computer using the external drive as the boot? I read that the G3 Pismo that allows. I know I can get someone to take out the hard disk and smash, but I expect much prefer to destroy it myself. And I can understand how to remove the hard drive, but it seems to imply a boatload of maneuvers and some tools that I have, at the present time. I would not completely destroy the computer. It would be good for recyclers to be able to retrieve some parts, though they might be useful to someone.

It is possible that I can't boot from the restore disc in the external drive, but maybe there's something that I have not yet tried. It seems crazy that the external hard drive with the restore disc appears on the desktop with a normal restart, and I can choose as boot drive but can't seem to complete commissioning. If anyone has any ideas on this subject, I would appreciate it a lot.

    Thank you.

    Jenny

Are you trying to boot the PowerBook to an external optical drive that is connected to a USB port or your external drive connectivity FireWire?  If it is USB, that is the problem.  The reading of an optical drive connected by USB is one thing, but start since it is a different matter.  Unfortunately, your Pismo is not capable of this.

  • Disk utility does not see an external drive on my network

I'm trying to reformat the external drive that I use for backup on Time Machine, but disk utility does not see it. She appears in the Finder as a shared drive. I use OS x 10.11.6. Thank you.

Disk utility is not supposed to see the network drives.

If it's a USB, connect it to your computer.

If it's an Ethernet or wireless, using a utility specifically designed for this.

  • After installing macOS Sierra. There is no disk external drive appears on the desktop.

  • Time Machine deleted messages on an external drive to the trash can on iMac are taking place on the hard drive?

I am struggling with a computer, try to empty the trash with 1million 300,000 Time machine backup files. It runs for two days now and won't install. At this rate, I'll need a week before my computer becomes viable. I don't feel able to go to the Terminal to do the trick. Also at this point, I'm afraid to stop the process again... Backups on an external drive of pigs 400 GB on my drive hard imac... I have so little room to work right now. I deleted some 200,000 files already yet the storage on my imac HD has not moved. The files in the Recycle Bin of the external drive really live on my hd now until they will be deleted if all goes well before Christmas?

I have a new computer to come next week so I'm wondering if I'll just reformat my entire hd in my imac to solve this problem... Any ideas?

You do all this in the Finder?

Time Machine has to delete the files from the user interface, normally "browsing Time Machine backup", navigate to the desired folder, and select the option "delete all backups of...» ». This is the approved way that should work.

If you are manually dragging the items in the trash of in a Time Machine backup, it can choke. Time Machine stores data with many levels of access control permissions & Finder seems to have difficulties to remove to empty the trash. In fact, I think that the TM drive has limits to prevent normal users to change data on this disk.

Personally, I think your safest option is to abandon the process, restart, erase and reformat the Time Machine drive. Who will lose all history backups but again in a clean condition seems to be better than trying to manually prune the Time Machine data. Time Machine removes old backups when it is full - so you shouldn't really need to intervene like this anyway.

Wait and see if anyone has a better idea.

P.S., each disk has its own "basket", so doing drag items should not fill your Mac startup disk. Maybe the operating system is out of memory, try to process all the files, exit other applications & see if that changes anything, you may have to wait just if you want to avoid to abandon the process.

  • Fast download of all pictures of iCloud on an external drive?

    Hi all

This question was asked a few times, but no real progress seems to have been done in the past months, so I thought I would ask the question again, perhaps that someone has found a new 'thing '? :

    Location:

-I would like to save all my (> 40 k pictures) photos currently in iCloud on an external drive.

-I don't have enough memory space on my Mac to Park gradually through 'Photos' (i.e. download all original to my mac-function)

-I want to directly choose a location (i.e., my external HARD drive) to store in.

    What I tried:

-Via Safari and Chrome: connect to iCloud.com, select all images (via 'Shift' and select photo first + last) and direct downloads on the external drive.

    Problem:

Since there are so many pictures, my Safari and my browsers Chrome "crashes" and do not complete the work (actually that they don't even start to download). If I select just say 5 pictures, it works in a jiffy.

Any ideas, I would be grateful?

    Thank you

    Do not use iCloud.com.

Set up a library on your external drive, make the system library and download the photos, once you've done that you can keep it this way, keep as a secondary library and change the library system to another library or simply export all the photos and remove the library.

  • external drive no connection/display in the finder

Just updated to macOS Sierra, and my external drive is no longer appears in the Finder or in my office. Even disk utility will not display it. It has been used for Time Machine.

Fixed by closing, connect my external drive and then go back to the top. I think the problem is that when I upgraded to Sierra, I don't have my drive connected.

  • Siri does not find the files on my external drives

    Hiya:

Just updated to Sierra of MacOS and I try to use Siri to search for files on my computer and as the title suggests, Siri spitting not files on my external drives (both connected via USB 3 on the back of the iMac). I tried to turn on Siri/off, Spotlight is not all excluded files, I tried signing in/out of my iCloud account. I tried to create a new user account on my Mac (which will not find anything). Permissions on my external hard drive seem ok: read/write is enabled for me, all the world and admin; "ignore permissions" is turned on.

I'm starting to think that this is a design limitation of the software. Someone else using Siri able to search for files on your external hard drives?

As near as I can tell, unlike the Finder and Spotlight, search Siri does not check for external drives.

  • WD My Passport drive external drive will not mount once my Macbook Pro is already on

    Hello

I actually had this problem for a year or two, but I'm finally getting bugged to this topic enough to see if it can be 'fixed '.

I have a 2 to WD My Passport portable HD connected to my macbook pro via an external (wall outlet) powered TRUST 5 x USB3 Hub.  If everything is connected, when I start the macbook pro there is no problem and the WD My Passport is mounted in the finder.  But if I remove manually the hard drive and then try to mount it again while the macbook pro is running it doesn't mount not.  It used to, but he won't now.

In the past the WD My passport would need to unplug and perhaps the USB3 hub would need power cable disconnect from him and the USB hubs out the macbook pro.  So when I joined this new and plugged the hard drive WD in the hub, it would rise very well.  But now it's just point blank refuses to ride until I restart the macbook pro.  Once I restart it it climbs perfectly and stays up forever--until it is dismantled manually - and then I have to restart the macbook pro again so he could mount once more.

I tried all combinations of pull cables and adapters to power but nothing has worked.  After dismantling the WD hd and plug back on the USB3 light led on the hub hub lights up and the hard drive turns manually, but, as I say, it is not mount and it is not visible in disk utility.

Any ideas please?  It's a bit annoying to have to keep restarting the mac whenever I had to unplug the hard drive WD.

"As issued" WD Passport appear to cause a number of reports of trouble around here. You have already taken the first "not best" - using a powered hub. Just make sure that the hub is really power (lights on, for example). It could be that the external drive is in its death throws.

This happen if the WD is the only thing on the powered hub?

The Mac USB ports work with other devices?

Here's what my experience with these things has believing me. WD made great bare discs, but I can't be so kind to their pens. Three questions:

    (1) I think that they should use chipsets which are not very easy to Mac.

    (2) most driving the ship formatted for Windows

    (3) even those shipped as "Mac editions have some odd which makes it difficult to access file formatting.

If you do not have to share the drive with a Windows computer, you can reformat the drive and that often fixes "fail to mount/recognize" question. Disk utility is your tool of choice here because it is already installed on your Mac. Completely erase the WD drive by selecting the tab 'Clear' in the bar tabs to disk utility. Define the plan of Partition to GUID Partition map and journaled for Mac extended format. Press the button 'clear '. The reader will now will be rid of eccentric WD partitioning and formatting schemes and be a good Mac hard drive.

If you share the road with a Windows computer, consider getting a better workout. After having fought external drives 'brand' on my computers and others that I maintain, I now use only boxes of other computer world with naked WD drives inside. Since this change, I have zero problems. For my MacBook Pro, I use this forum:

    https://eShop.MacSales.com/item/OWC/MEPMU3ES/

I ordered the external power optionally for use at home and go on the road bus-powered. It's an empty envelope - just a hard drive of nu. They are more expensive than the stuff that Staples puts on sale every weekend, but are much more reliable. I ask the question. "What is my value data?"

  • clips from library for the FCPX external drive disappear

    First time user FCPX.

I run an end iMac from 2012 and has been using iMovie 10.1.2 until yesterday.  Just before you buy FCPX, I ran out of hard drive space and got a disk external 4 TB and transferred my iMovie library here.  I've renamed the library external iMovie "iMovie" and deleted the one on my Mac, releasing 500 GB of space.  Tested with iMovie using the external drive, no problem, everything works ok.

Then, I bought yesterday FCPX.  To have access to all my old clips in imovie, I used iMovie and open "library external iMovie" and used the 'send to Final Cut Pro library' command in the file menu of iMovie.  Everything seemed fine, as I was able to open the library in FCPX and all my clips and events were there.

I thought everything was great, then I went to add some clips to FCPX of my video camera.  I created a second library FCPX and put the clips.  They have downloaded completely, but after downloading said it was over, my machine froze and I had to do a hard reboot by turning off.  This isn't all that unusual, sometimes my Mac crashes when I leave it alone for several hours.

After that I turned on and opened FCPX, I see in the left pane, two libraries, and events, but some clips appear on my screen.  I opened and closed the library hoping to get the clips to the rear, without success.

Any idea what went wrong or how to fix it?  I don't know whether to attribute the problem to computer freezing, or rather the use for the first time an external drive to host my files.

If I can't understand what went wrong, and then I simply repeat the process I went through the first time and see if I get the same results, but I'd rather figure out what I did wrong and try to fix it, so I have a higher level of comfort, go ahead.   I hope that this will not be an experience repeat everything simply because I'm hosting my video files on an external drive.

    Thank you!

The problem is caused by the shutdown. You could see if there is a backup in the case of movies, but there are maybe not if you have imported only from the media.

You cannot use this computer with FCP if hard it crashes. You have to get it repaired. No computer should crash like that unless you pull the plug. If you have problems to get a UPS to give you time to stop.

  • Import the external drive, indicates each clip

When I import media in FCPX from an SD card, I am able to select the appropriate folder that contains my support.

After a meeting, the first thing I do is to empty the gross support on an external drive.  If I try to import media for this drive, every single clip on the entire disk, no matter which folder it is located, appear in the import window.  I can't simply navigate to the folder that interests me.  Is there a setting I'm missing?  Any help would be appreciated.

Put the contents of the card in files rather than the level of the root of the drive. If the application considers DCIM and AVCHD, it assumes that it is watching a disc of the camera and show all available media.

  • Copy of iPhoto/iTunes to external drive for upgrade

I would like to transfer my iPhoto (5.0.4) and files iTunes (9.2.1) of my old iMac G5 (running 10.4.11) to my new iMac (El Capitan running).

My iTunes library is now on an external drive (and iTunes is headed there), and I would like to copy my iPhoto on the same drive - to move together on the new iMac while maintaining the structures of files etc.

Can someone tell me what is the best way to do this? I'm not clear what iPhoto files files, I need to move or copy on the external hard drive to retain the current structure of the organization/etc folder or the process then bring them into the right place on the new machine.

Simply drag and drop them where you want libraries to reside. As iPhoto is plu included you will use the Photos app. You can learn how to move the library iPhotos to Photos for Mac on http://osxdaily.com/2015/04/17/move-iphoto-library-to-photos-mac/.

Insofar as your iTunes library, yet once just drag and drop. 'Teach' iTunes where the library is simply double-click the library and iTunes will find it and then "know" where the library.

  • external drives on a mac file sharing

I have file sharing set upward at the machines at home and work so that I can remotely access or the other anyway. But on one, I can access the root and get external drives, if they are connected; not in the other. I need an external drive C ONLY for transfer applications such as TurboTax, iBank, etc disc to hard drive on the MacBook Air. Bought an external drive of C & computer recognize no more disc stuck in drive C. visit mandatory at the Genius Bar to eject the disc. Genius used Apple and immediately recognized hard drive. My very small requirement & will use player for videos, music, photos, etc. Probably use no more than 3 times a year. Intended to save a few $$$ to by not buying is not Apple drive.

I'm on the right track? Number of external market readers if some should work correctly. Now very hesitant, but he must overcome this obstacle.

    Thank you

What is external drive C you mentioned? External DVD drive? It is probably not entirely compatible with your MacBook Air.

If you have another Mac that has the DVD player, DVD sharing would be best way rather than using your C drive.
