F12 host Shutdown gracefully shutdown VMs?

If you select F12 to stop the hypervisor, it will gracefully disable all virtual machines?  If this is not the case, someone knows a way without using vSphere?

for a host ESX (i) self-contained, you can configure your Virtual Machine and stop boot options.

Configuration tab of the host ESX (i) - Virtual Machine power - properties.

.. .and no, F12 will not gracefully disable guests.

  • shutdown VMs test when failure of datacenter

    Hello

    Let's say we have 6 esx hosts in a cluster with ha + drs.

    3 guests are datacenter1 and 3 guests in datacenter2.

    SMV production onto 3 guests, so there is enough capacity for a failover of datacenter.

    now, we would like to use the available space remaining to test virtual machines and when there is a data center failure (i.e. 3 hosts are down), I would like to have the VMs test automatically put out of service and make the room for the production of virtual machines whose surviving restarting by HA on the site.

    So my question is: How can it be done?

    I guess that is not possible with the "builtin" feature, so perhaps someone does a smart script that can detect the number of active host or datacenter failure and computers stop trigger virtual tests!

    Are you able to put all the VMS to Test in a folder, for example TestVMs?

    Then, you can use the following command to PowerCLI to stop all the virtual machines in the TestVMs folder.

    Get-VM-location TestVMs | Stop-VM

    If your folder structure does not allow for this, are all the Test virtual machines in there data store (s) clean with none of the Production virtual machines, you can use

    Get - VM - Datastore TestVMDataStore | Stop-VM

    Little tricky is going to be automate the triggering of the command to execute. Do you have any server monitoring tools?

  • shutdown VMs on vmotion

    Hi, I have a question.

    Let's say I have two servers ESX 4.0 on one site. The first server is fully loaded with test vm that are always up and running, the other ESX Server has production vm only and is also fully charged.

    Now, it would be possible when the production server fails, vmotion machines to test ESX server and automaticly the test vm stop in order to create a sufficient capacity for production vm? Or is it only possible with a charge of 50% / 50% on each server?

    Thanks in advance!

    Yes in this case DRS will be very good for you.

    We have a VDI environment where the connection broker agent sometimes fails image stops when the user disconnects, and I want to run a weekly script late in the night to feed free of charge throughout.  In addition, sometimes people join local FDD / CD and these cause problems with DRS, so I want to delete all these at the same time.

    I could use the following:

    Get-Cluster "VDS - SDC01 | Get - VM UK1 * | Stop-VMGuest - confirm: $false

    Get-Cluster "VDS - SDC01 | Get - VM UK1 * | Stop-VM-confirm: $false

    Get-Cluster "VDS - SDC01 | Get - Vm | Where-Object {}

    FloppyDrive get - VM $_. ForEach-Object {Set-FloppyDRIVE-diskette $_ - StartConnected $False - connected $False - confirm: $False | %{"Changed" + $_.} Name}}

    But the education of the diskette/CD disconnect player is somewhat clumsy.  All I want to do is set the VM for when what they feed on once again, he is going to be there no CD or FDD value so that that they will cause problems with the DRS (connected locally or host).

    Looking around, I saw an opportunity to use Set-CDDrive - CD $cd - NoMedia and whole-FloppyDrive-Floppy $floppy - NoMedia

    As all virtual machines must be turned off at this point, could I just replace the last line with something like

    Get-Cluster "VDS - SDC01 | Get - Vm | {

    Game-CDDrive - CD $cd - NoMedia

    Game-FloppyDrive-floppy $floppy - NoMedia

    The '%' is an alias for Foreach-Object. You can check with

    Get-Alias-Name %

    All virtual machines will be placed, one by one, to the code block after the %.

    In the block of code the current VM is accessible via the variable $_.

    3. Stop VMwareLM-ServiceVM (by distributed switch) by VC

  • HA restarts VMs after failure

    Hello

    Restart HA Deep Dive Duncan said in priority and arrested "prioritization is made by each host and not in the world."

    I need some explanation on this point.

    1 restart VM after failure is considered State power VM, is he going to turn on VMs or not?

    2-HA restart is a local configuration not one world, in case auto sett I strat up by each host, in effect HA restart?

    Any help please

    Thank you

    If the monitoring host is not enabled VMs will restart when come to the host is running in this case power VM status kept in the cluster or only on the registered host?

    Disabling host followed completely defeated the purpose of having HA allowed in the first place. And it does not change the implication that auto-start is not always supported with HA, since strictly speaking, HA is always enabled on the cluster object. Disabling host simply means THAT HA will take no action at all if a host fails or is isolated from the monitoring network.

    The status of virtual machine power must still be updated on all hosts independently HA know if you turn on VMs manually or automatically with the auto start.

  • 6.0 ESXi hosts are no longer

    Hello world!

    I have a problem with VMware ESXi 6.0.

    I have a VMware Cluster with 3 6.0 ESXi host. Last night 2 ESXi host has become unresponsive. ESXi hosts concerned, responds to the ping, but unplug vCenter, unable to connect directly to the client host with vSphere and unresponsive on DCUI. The VMs - running concerned guests - became unresponsive (VMware HA cannot restart VMs, because the host has locked the VMs file). Only solution: reset the hosts. After hard reset hosts, HA restart VM on another host and host affected normal work. The problem occurd when high e / s (backup, at the level of the files inside the virtual machine) on HBA.

    In the /var/log/vmkernel.log , I see a lot of messages both "crash":

    The host firmware versions are later.

    VMware installed on a USB stick (clean install, not upgraded), LOG dir on the CF data store.

    The storage and the side FC switches have no error/warning message.

    I see the VMware KB 2086025 and 2125904. In this KB article the symptoms are very similar to our situation, but our guests have the most recent version of the Emulex driver (KB articles: version prior to 10.2.340.18, our 10.4.236.0 version)

    I tried the latest Emulex firmware (version: 10.6.126.0, install and reboot host) but the host crash again and the same newspaper as above.

    Today a new problem, when I collect information on diagnosis (registers of export) of the host:

    • first of all welcome: unplug vCenter for seconds 3 times (State of heartbeat), and download of the newspaper failed, when the host disconnect, virtual machines (which run on this host) does not not on LAN
    • second host: connect download start, after the 10-minute purple screen:

    purple_screen.png

    I have found no solution.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks for your help!

    Have you seen the question of host unresponse before 6.0 updated. If not, I suspect strongly this is due to "VMware KB: ESXi 6.0 the network connectivity is lost with the NETDEV WATCHDOG timeouts in the vmkernel.log". Try upgrading to the latest version 6.0 that contains the fix for this.

    The purple screen could be a different product bug and I doubt that it does not always happen. Based on the screenshot, it looks like collection Journal (vm-support) was going through some of the nodes of the VSI and failed at this point. So this issue could happen specifically only during some invocation of vm-support. Good to raise a complaint with the help of VMware.

    Our guests all start with three characters make the difference between SiteA1 and SiteB1, that is sa1host1 sa1host2... sa1host9 and sb2host1, sb2host2, sb2host9, etc.

    Our warehouses are the names "sa1_exch01", "sa1_sql_01", sa1_data_01"for all data stores that are found on the Site1.  While the warehouses of data named 'sb2_exch01', 'sb2_sql_01', sb2_data_01' for all data stores that are found on the Site2.

    Can help you with a script that will check all virtual machines on the hosts on Site1 and report those who have warehouses of data does begin with 'sa1' and similarly all virtual machines on the hosts on the Site2 but give report of those who have warehouses of data that do not begin with "sb2.

    See you soon

    Try something like this

    $vms = Get-View -ViewType VirtualMachine -Property Name,Datastore,"Runtime.Host"

    foreach($vm in $vms){    $esx = Get-View $vm.Runtime.Host -Property Name    $ds = Get-View $vm.Datastore -Property Name    if($ds | where {$_.Name.Substring(0,3) -notmatch $esx.Name.Substring(0,3)}){        $vm | Select Name,            @{N="Site";E={if($esx.Name.Substring(0,3) -eq "sa1"){"SiteA1"}else{"SiteB1"}}},            @{N="Host";E={$esx.Name.Split('.')[0]}},            @{N="DS";E={[string]::Join(',',($ds | %{$_.Name}))}}    }}

    It should list all the virtual machines that do not follow the rule.

  • Moving hosts to new vCenter and retaining current licences for guests

    I need to upgrade an environment vSphere 4.1 to 5.1u1. I plan to install a clean vCenter 5.1 and need to migrate hosts without interruption to the virtual machines. The way to remove the old vCenter may not be because it requires the host mode maintenance and VMs to be evacuated. What plan do is disconnect from the host and have the new vCenter appropriated. I will then possibly incoming days guests through VUM to 5.1u1.

    My question is when the new vCenter appropriates the hosts what will happen to the licensing of 4.1 esx/esxi hosts? Will be the current 4.1 esx/esxi licenses follow the hosts or will I have to add the esx/esxi through the client license? The new vCenter will be installed in trial mode until licenses can be provided for me.

    A second question is when the esxi hosts are upgrading to 5.1 and I did not upgrade licenses will guests enter a grace period until a license can be applied? I don't know how long the hosts were in trial mode, before 4.1 licenses applied so I assume every 60 days were used.

    With adding hosts to the new vCenter Server, the license key from the host server will be added to the repository of the vCenter Server license; Even if this is not the case you could simply add the current license key to the new vCenter Server manually. Just make sure that you do not use more CPU that purchased licenses.

    Once you upgrade the host, make sure you have the new license keys already available. As much as I know there is no evaluation period additional to the hosts upgraded who were running older versions of 60 days. The grace period of 14 days you mentioned applied to versions in ESX 3.x used FlexLM licenses (i.e. license files).

  • What is a difference between 'Logical processors' and 'logical processors for each host?

    Hi all!

    In the official document VMware "vsphere-51-configuration-maxima" or "vsphere-55-configuration - maximums.pdf" in the section "ESXi host maximum rates------Maximums calculation" exists in the elements:

    "Maximum CPU------logical CPU for each host ' (vSphere 5.1: 160;)   vSphere 5.5: 320)

    and

    "Machine virtual maximums------virtual CPU by host ' (vSphere 5.1: 2048;)    vSphere 5.5: 4096)

    Question: what is the difference between the two?

    And a more complex thing to maximum rates:

    Virtual machines per host: 512

    Number of hosts per cluster: 32

    Therefore, the cluster may be Virtual Machines (maximum): 521 * 32 = 16384

    But in the document, we have only 4000 VMs in maximum.

    Why?

    Thank you

    Ramirez,

    I understand your question as difference between 1. logic virtual CPU vs / by the hosts and 2. cluster/host Max County VM.

    Consider the case below;

    2 servers ESXi - 20 mV

    ESXi taken 1-4, 2 cores / socket

    ESXi 2-8 Sockets, 2 cores / socket

    Now here number of CPU logic-(4 x 2) + (8 x 2) = 24

    20 virtual machines - 2 jacks, 2 core / socket

    Virtual CPU count - 20 x (2 * 2) = 80

    Hope your first confusion is clear now.

    Why?

    This means that even if you have 32 Guest and each host can accommodate 512 VMs each the maximum number of virtual machines per cluster may not exceed 4000. And it does not mean that you can have a maximum of VMS (512 * 32).

    Host names are captured using a reverse DNS lookup. You DNS, you create a record and a PTR record for each virtual machine.

  • List of the vm on the host - URGENT

    Hi friend

    I need a script to perl api to the virtual machine host list...

    It's actually pretty simple.  Here is an example that does with good performance.

    #! / usr/bin/perl - w
    # by Reuben Stump (http://www.virtuin.com)
    use strict;
    use warnings;
    use VMware::VIRuntime;
    OPTS::parse();
    OPTS::Validate();
    Util::Connect();
    my ($vms, $hosts, vm_map %, host_map %);
    $vms = Vim::find_entity_views (view_type-online "VirtualMachine",
    Properties-online ['name']);
    $hosts = Vim::find_entity_views (view_type-online "HostSystem",
    Properties-online ['name', 'vm']);
    % host_map = map {$_-> {mo_ref}-> {value} => $_} @$hosts;
    % vm_map = map {$_-> {mo_ref}-> {value} => $_} @$vms;
    foreach my {$host (@$hosts)}
    print $host-> {name}. "\n";
    my $vm foreach (@{$host-> {'vm'} |}) []} ) {
    Print "". " $vm_map {$vm-> value}-> {name}. "\n";
    }
    }
    Util::Disconnect();
    BEGIN {}
    {PERL_LWP_SSL_VERIFY_HOSTNAME} $ENV = 0;
    }

    Samples:

    $ perl ListFolders.pl--username=administrator@vlab--password = VMware1! -Server = 172.16.254.51

    VLAB-esx - 01.vlab.local

    TestVM1

    VLAB-esx - 02.vlab.local

    TestVM2

    You can add more values for properties named argument in the find_entity_views() method.  If you don't mind a drop of great performance, you can remove the properties-online [] argument and it will retrieve all properties (but this can be very slow in large environments).

    If you are curious about the performance of the Perl SDK scripts against vCenter, take a look here: http://www.virtuin.com/2012/11/best-practices-for-faster-vsphere-sdk.html

    You can also watch the VI SDK for Perl documentation, which covers methods * _view() more in detail.
