Factory restore does not! Intervention of possible virus?

Hi all

Saturday, my computer has a horrible virus on it... I don't know yet what it was. Needless to say she caused explorer.exe restart constantly to make the very difficult to use computer. I managed to do a system restore, which bought me 2 hours (I thought I had solved the problem), but just in case I have saved the files I need the Mac laptop I'm writing currently. So, thinking I was finally triumphant I restarted and press ctrl + f11. Nothing. Windows has started. So I restarted the computer and held ctrl I quickly you press f11. Yet once nothing, until the bar Dell loading was completed, and in the short time between this screen and the windows flash screen of the computer beeps accordingly to a button. But still the Factory Reset has not loaded. I'm running a 5150 Dimension so I am sure that the computer has done the Factory Reset partition. But it's a kind of essential because Dell didn't send me a disc of Windows XP with my system, and apparently someone deleted me the product code of my computer. So, basically, if I can't restore settings I'm in a deep. (And I have tried EVERYTHING to identify and remove this virus... but it is elusive. It has elements of a sasser (play with my hosts file) but apparently the spazzy explorer.exe is a Vundo problem. HOWEVER, whatever this thing is missed time Kaspersky (which I am more able to install) and AVG, AND software tool windows malware and the removal of sasser Symantec tool.

P.S. to mods... Sorry if this is posted in the wrong section. Hard drive seemed appropriate...

Viruses often attack the system restore because it's such a threat to them - which is certainly possible.  Unfortunately, all my anti-virus, anti-malware and anti-spyware solutions are for Vista (which is the Forum, you are in).  You must post this question in the appropriate forum where they have the information, procedures and links to help you.

One thing, if the system restore does not work in normal mode, it sometimes will run in Mode safe then start safe mode and try it.

In addition, if you use any Norton product, turn it off, then restart and try to restore again - Norton is known to cause problems with system restore.

Sometimes, the problem can be solved by turning the restoration of the system off and then back on.  Unfortunately, a side effect of this is to lose all your restore points you want to restore this may not be such a good option to try (even if it can correct the underlying problem): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310405/en-us.

If none of the above works, please repost your question on the Forums of XP to: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/windowsxp where the XP experts will be happy to help you.

  • Factory restore does not restore Win7 but Win8

I just installed Windows 8, but I want to go back to Windows 7. So I chose the factory via the HP tool restore Assistant, which I have done many times before getting a clean install.

To my surprise it has restored the laptop to a new installation of Win8, but I want to go back to installing Win7? Is this average score the 'restore Win7' has been changed?

How to get back to Win7 with factory settings?

I don't burn any media. But I fixed it. I was running to the recovery of Windows, I tried again when starting (F11) and this recovery gave back Win7. So I guess there is a difference there.

So I'm happy, I got rid of Windows 8 (and 15 males ;-))

  • Envy of HP dv7-7332ea - System Restore does not work on windows 8

    Hey there,

I recently bought this machine about a month ago. I used the Windows 8 System Restore feature to restore my pc to a previous state.

However, after running it, I got a message saying: it failed and to ensure my anti virus is disabled. Accordingly, I have disabled Norton and tried again but it still does not work.

Previously, the only problem I had with the pc was that he locked himself completely and therefore I turned off the machine that I have been unable to close.

When I rebooted, HP Support Assistant could not run and so I uninstalled and then reinstalled from website theHP. It is now resolved. The thing is I'm a little scared that something is wrong with the machine that is the reason why I think that the system restore does not work.

I'm a newbie on the computers here. Could you please give me some advice to diagnose if there is nothing wrong with my machine and fix the system restore?

    See you soon,.

    Hi Damon,

Norton is a component called 'Tamper Protection' that should be disabled before a system restore can be performed - for more details on this topic, see the following link.

  • professional XP System Restore does not

My system restore doesn't work on my xp professional and I think that there are errors in registry. Can anyone help please?

    What does "does not?

Why do you think there are errors in the registry?

What is your system brand and model?

What is your Version of XP and the Service Pack?

Describe your current antivirus and software anti malware situation: Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), McAfee, Symantec, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, Panda, Trend Micro, CA, Defender, ZoneAlarm, Comodo, PC Tools, etc.

What is the issue that you are experiencing that you think that the system restore will be remedied (or you are just convenient)?  Remember that the system restore is not a time machine.

Have you ever used the system restore to restore your system in the past?

Describe exactly what happens when you try to perform a system restore and the error messages you see which indicates that it does not work (some thing besides 'it does not work").

Some tools Anti Virus 'protect' your system so that they will not allow a restore of the system work properly.

For example, if you use Norton/Symantec products, you will see a message like this:

Restoration incomplete. Your computer cannot be restored...

It is also a popular Symantec problem (well, I'll be polite and call an "undocumented feature"...), they wrote an article about it:
    https://support.Norton.com/SP/en/us/home/current/solutions/v51118464_EndUserProfile_en_us?product=home&version=1

According to what you use for malware protection, you may need to disable the product temporarily, do the system restore and then turn the products light up again when the system restore is complete.

Sometimes you need start your system in Mode safe and so that your protection programs are not running, and then do the system restore.  Tips from Microsoft in some of their articles that if the system restore does not restore your computer, start in Safe Mode, and then run the system restore.  It works for some configurations.

Note that if you do a Safe Mode system restore, you will not be able to cancel it and there is no option on the System Restore screen for "Undo my last restoration" as you would if you were to restore your system from a normal startup.

Give these ideas some consideration if they apply to you.

Sometimes malicious will afflict your system restore to prevent you to find and remove malware.  It would much rather you trick into thinking that you need to repair or reinstall your XP when it is not necessary.

No matter what you use for protection against malware, I do so and then only begin to solve any problems:

Download, install, update, and make at least a full scan with these free malware detection programs can solve any problems:

    Malwarebytes (MMFA): http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
    SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

It can be uninstalled later if you wish.

The scans by operating clean, reboot, test and we can fix any other issues.

System Restore is sometimes so afflicted or Restore Points are suspicious, the best solution is to reinstall your system restore.  This will remove the old Restore Points, but sometimes it's the only way to fix a broken system restore.  You don't have to reinstall XP, only the part of system restore.

That can leave you with your problem of unspecified origin that you hope the system restore will fix (using a system restore is usually not equivalent to fixing the problem though).

  • System Restore does not-how do to adjust settings

System Restore does not work on my laptop.
It did not work because the new toshiba set by phone for me when I bought it.
But now I formatted it and its not working yet.

Any help on how to adjust the settings.

    Hello

    It's very easy
First you should check if the system restore is not disabled on your laptop.
This can be checked in the control-> system-> System Restore tab panel.

You have to uncheck the option called turning off the coast of the the system restore on all drives.
Please check if there is enough free space on the two drives for the files in system restore.
In the settings you must set the disk space to use to the maximum!

After restarting again you should start the System Restore tool and should create a system restore point.

    Good luck

  • System Restore does not work, once again.

Hi, I read a topic of 2010 that has not yet been answered. I worked with a tech at Microsoft by e-mail, but when I answered: System Restore didn't work. Now it does not work yet. I had installed Returnil system safe, but I got an error msg 0 x 80004005, (third-party antivirus), so I uninstalled the program. I went through the registry and delete something with Returnil all 4 sections of the registry. Remove the common files folder that was left after uninstalling. Restarted my computer several times. I use MSE, with free versions of spywareblaster and MBAB, who are both at the request not in real time. I tried to restore to a time before I had installed Returnil first, (I installed and uninstalled 3 times in 2 days) and could not. I tried to use a snapshot to restore spywareblaster and managed to restore to the point 2 x before installing because forward the installation of point returnil has been altered. At the moment no malware has been detected and no threat of MSE. What to do next?

Thanks in advance for any help. Liz.

Here's my usual route to find out how to reinstall System Restore:

If you have already run MBAM and SAS, temporarily disabled your antivirus and anti-malware applications and tried your Safe Mode system restore and you still get the restoration of the system to work, you must reinstall just your system restore.  You do not have to reinstall XP - just reinstall the system restore part.

System Restore is a frequent target of attacks by malicious software.

When you reinstall the system restore, all your current Restore Points will be deleted and you must restart your computer once the installation is complete.  After the reboot, a new Restore Point will be created as a new point of system control in your calendar of SR.

If your system had a malware infection, it could be that some of the files in your old Restore Points are also infected up to wipe out the 'old' and new is often a good idea if you wonder if the old Restore Points are infected or not.

Assuming that your XP is installed on drive C of your computer:

As you go through the reinstallation of the RS, the resettlement will be asked to locate certain files as you go along and ask your XP installation CD.   If you do not have a genuine XP bootable installation CD, you can change the path where Setup looks for files one at a time, because they are needed.  More on that later.

    Navigate to the following folder:

    c:\Windows\Inf

Locate and right-click the following file:

    SR.inf

    Choose Install

If you can not see the sr.inf file, set up your system to show hidden files and show file extensions.

Click on tools, Options, view and turn on "Show the hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types", then you should be able to see the file c:\windows\inf\sr.inf.

Installation can request files from the c:\windows\inf\386 folder.  It would be your installation CD bootable XP genuine if you have one and the Service Pack installed on your system must be the same as the CD that you will use.

You don't need absolutely a CD to do the reinstall, because files must already be on your system somewhere if SR was working before.

If you are prompted for a file, and you can't find it where I suggest in my example below (it works on my system), you need to search your hard drive and find where the files on your system.

If the request to a file and you don't know where he is, let waiting for installation and click Start, search, and search for it
has requested the file and find it on your system.  If SR has already worked before, the file is already on your system somewhere.

Search finds the requested file, go back to the installation and specify the path where you found the file requested and click OK.  Installation can request several files along the way, but you can find them all.

Here's how my system works when I reinstall SR when I pretend that I don't have a genuine XP bootable installation CD:

    When you are asked:

    SR.sys

    Point the install in c:\windows\system32\drivers

    When you are asked:

    c:\windows\system32\srclient.dll

    Point install it in c:\windows\system32

    When you are asked:

    Filelist. XML

Point of installation at c:\windows\system32\restore (or c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386)

    When you are asked:

    srframe. MMF

    Point installation c:\windows\system32\dllcache (c:\windows\system32\restore)

Once installation is complete, you will receive a message that you must restart your computer.

Restart your computer and look at your schedule of SR.  You should have a new point system control in your calendar.

When you get SR working again, I ran MBAM and SAS to make sure that your system is reasonably clean of malware.

The day that you think you need to help the system restore you is not the day to discover the system restore does not work, then you need to test.

After the reinstallation, manually create a Restore Point and test the restoration process and make sure that you are convinced that it works from one end to the other.

I use windows xp media edition.  The system restore does not start.  I lift the box, but when I click next to choose a system restore point, nothing happens.  Help!  I tried to do it in safe mode, but it does not either here.

    Running sfc/scannow won't help you.

It's nice when sfc/scannow runs silently and can't find anything to do, but if your installed Service Pack does not match the Service Pack of your true XP bootable installation CD, it will complain (much).

Norton is notorious for interfering with SR, so much that they wrote an article about it:
    http://Service1.Symantec.com/support/sharedtech.nsf/pfdocs/2005113009323013

Sometimes the system restore is so distressed that you just need to reinstall the system restore (you don't need to reinstall XP - just the part system restore).  The downside to this is that, in doing so, you will lose all your current Restore Points.

If only the SR calendar is showing a blank white screen where the calendar should be empty, this means usually the jscript.dll file became somehow unregistered and you can re-record it, but who does not exactly sound like your situation.

It does not hurt to re-register the DLL files, even if they do not need renewal, you can run these commands and then check your SR:

Click Start, run, and in the box enter orders following one at a time.  Click the OK button to execute each command one at a time.

    regsvr32 jscript.dll
    regsvr32 vbscript .dll
    regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll (it's a look of slash)

The last order for mshtml load the DLL but can also contain a harmless warning depending on your environment.

I guess that Norton is somehow interfere well, but running that SR mode without failure is usually the remedy to this situation.

If that does not receive your SR going, then maybe some other people have ideas.
