Features of VMware

Hi, I have a few questions about VMware ESXi 6

1. can I vmotion storage and host of a cluster of version 5.5 for a cluster of version 6 (im using vcenter 6 to manage the cluster 2)

2. on my cluster of version 5.5, 2 servers are connected directly to a storage of Clarion. Now, they have created a cluster of version 6 which has 3 hosts.

The customer wants the same data store to be seen on the new 3 servers (all will be done via switch SAN zoning) (2 servers on cluster version 5.5 and Clarion storage will be attached to SAN pass)

If, after the zoning, if I perform a rescan on the servers in cluster 3 version 5; will they see data warehouses and the virtual machines on the Clarion storage or they reformatted data warehouses after a rescan it and adding data warehouses?

Thank you!

1. Yes, you can migrate the virtual machine for 5.5 vSphere vSphere 6.0.

2. just rescan for VMFS storage adapter that it will list you the LUN formatted by vSphere5.5. It won't have data loss at all and vSphere 6.0 will detect the VMFS.

The storytelling administration guide follows writes:

    Page 10

You can configure vCenter Converter to synchronize the destination with the source machine virtual machine after

hot cloning. The synchronization is performed by the transfer from the source to the destination blocks which

changed during the initial period of cloning. To avoid the loss of data on the virtual machine of destination,

vCenter Converter can close some Windows services before synchronizing. Based on your

settings, vCenter Converter stops the selected Windows services so that no critical changes occur on the

source machine so that the destination is being synchronized.

From my point of view, it works as follows:

1.) hot clone of the source to the destination virtual computer computer

Synronization 2) takes place directly after hot cloning, to get the delta during the initial period of cloning.

Restrictions related to the creation of snapshots of Windows Sources

vCenter Converter uses snapshots VSS to save the State of the source volumes during the hot cloning of physics and

virtual machines that are running Windows. Instant VSS are also used to synchronize the virtual destination

machine with the source machine after the initial conversion. Some of the issues related to VSS are inherited in

vCenter Converter and can prevent the successful completion of your conversion tasks.

3.) only the combination of the service with synchronization to stop makes sense.

    Page 53

You can ensure that you don't lose data services that are running on the source machine. You can select

Which services to stop before vCenter Converter synchronizes the data between the source and

destination machine. Accordingly, the services do not result in data while the computer source and destination

    are synchronized.

Import a Windows powered machine means that vCenter Converter copies the data from the source

machine to the destination machine, while the source computer is still running and generate changes.

This process is the first transfer of data. You can transfer data for the second time by copying only the

changes during the first transmission of data. This process is called synchronization.

What does the second time? I can do the following:

Back to Monday from 20:00 to 24:00 the Hotcloning of the physical server to virtual.

Then, to Tuesday 20:00 synchronize the physical server with the virtual and stop the physical server.

I think that's not possible, two separte the first and the second stage.

during the first transfer of data. This process is called synchronization.

Synchronization is available only for Windows XP or operating systems later source.

If you resize volumes FAT or shrink NTFS volumes, you cannot use the sync option.

    Prerequisites

Stop services of source to make sure they don't generate additional changes during synchronization.

that could lead to data loss.

Must serve it it I can only do this at the start time of the conversion, when the wizards to configure the conversion tasks is selected.

In all of this means for me that with synchronization window maintaince than AI based on time, how long is the synchronization and the closure of the physical server and power on the virtual machine.

Converter 4.2, synchronization occurs just after the cloning process and therefore changes occurred to the source during the period of cloning are also applied to the destination machine. Now, with this version of the converter, it is not possible to separate the tasks of synchronization and cloning (i.e. you can't clone the machine Monday and synchronize this Tuesday).

  • Features of VMware Operations Manager Enterprise 5.0 Forensics

    Hi all!

I'm trying the Operations Manager Enterprice 5.0 (trial version) for a few days and I'm a little confused on something, so I would appreciate help! I'm studying the Operations Manager Enterprice 5.0 Getting Started Guide, which explicitly refers to some duties of forensic analysis of the program, but I can't really find this option. Any person, or by using this option? I would really appreciate some help on this! Thank you!

PS: I also join the pdf I use

Yes, in practice, when you say 'you need to see the custom user interface and vSphere UI as two different products' what exactly do I have to do to be able to use the custom user interface?

Already, the answer has been given in this thread.

    To clarify:

In the vSphere client, the "Plugin" that you have a screenshot for is simply the URL vcops-vsphere incorporated in the vSphere client.

    What we call "vSphere UI.

Custom or Enterprise user interface is not available in this view.

The custom user interface requires a unique set of permissions and generally LDAP rest in what concerns authentication.

So, if you are an "Admin" in vCenter, it doesn't matter in the custom, user interface because it's supported LDAP (which I mentioned in a previous post).

    Further, hitting the point:

    • There are 3 UI.

    • Each user interface requires different credentials
    • Only the UI vSphere is accessible from the vSphere client
    • The custom UI needs LDAP and different permissions, which are described in the Administrator's guide

Series, I really think you would benefit from reading our admin and user for this product guides.

  • VMware Player vs Workstation

I'm puzzled on the VMware site, trying to find a product matrix explaining why I should additionally vmplayer or vm workstation.  I downloaded and played with workstation - feels solid.  Before that I spend an additional $ 150, can someone tell me the differences between player and workstation albums?  A direct link would be nice as well.

Follow-up questions - if I have already created with Workstation, VMS vmplayer will launch them?

Does vmplayer support import of old Windows Xp virtual machines (supported by Windows 7 Pro)?

  • VMWare Fusion Pro

    Hi all

Two questions: can I create of virtual machines with Fusion Pro? And I can change the hardware settings on virtual machines with Fusion Pro? i.e. Add another network connection, modify a serial port, change the hard drive sizes, etc...

Context: I buy a new laptop for a company I put in place, and I'm looking at a mac. Most of my software is windows based, which is not a problem, because I already use VMWare workstation on my PC. But I can not run on a mac Workstation, so if I need to create new virtual machines, I have to go back to a PC workstation, or can Fusion Pro do?

Option B is to create a virtual Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8 using my existing PC, then basically save them as models and the clone necessary to make new machines.

Option C is to use the PC to create a windows virtual machine, and then use Fusion to run VMWare Workstation on the virtual machine on the mac, and save the virtual machine, I create the machine host to run them using VMWare fusion. But that means the purchase of two packages, and besides, I'm worried that Xzibit will appear and say "Yo dawg, I you herd as VM" or I'll violate the space/time continuum and cause a black hole

If anyone knows where I can find a comparison chart between Fusion and Fusion Pro would be great as well

    Thank you!

VMware Fusion while having only the features of VMware Workstation however it is much more then what VMware Player is and can create and modify Virtual Machines.

  • VMware Workstation 8 - space recovery of files deleted?

Well, I tried the compact feature in VMWare tools and who does not free up space used from the virtual machine.

Apparently the VMDK file is large, 50 GB so that when I connect to the virtual machine, it says, I have used only 25GB.

How can I return this 25 GB of files deleted from the Virtual Machine on my local drive?

Sorry for who does not know with Virtual Machines. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thank you.

what you need is the so-called "shrink" function - if I remember just which is available through the vmware-tools inside the VM Toolbox.

  • How to add a second hard drive Ubuntu Server, that runs on vmware workstation 9

    Hello

I am running vmware workstation on windows 9 8, and I installed Ubuntu 12.10 as a virtual machine on my SSD. I installed a second hard drive in the machine and use the "Add a HDD" feature on vmware workstation to add and pre-allocate space. The problem is that the drive does not appear in Ubuntu. I have checked/Media and / dev, I expected to see something like /sda *. It is a procedural step, I missed it, please help!

Do I have to mount the drive in a special way? How can I check if it is properly attached?

    Thank you!

What you said so far, it's like adding a second physical drive to a physical computer and the operating system cannot access until it was partitioned and formatted, and then it can be mounted.  To do the same thing in a VM!

  • Why VMware?

    Hey guys,.

I had a discussion with a brilliant super architect. I continued talking vmware when she is in openstack. He asked me this,

"Tell me what is the future of the computer company such as VMware." Why a customer would pay for these software expensive while that Openstack and open source will be to provide all the necessary functionality"

I could come only with care as the answer, but what you really think?

    Thank you

    RJ

There is not bad... of thinking, understanding... lets talk with a few points

1 - industry proven... maturity... stability

of course, the open stack is great... and it has great future... but still, he is yet to prove... and accept. VMware is the pioneer... they founded the perfect and complete recipe for virtualization in the data center... and now it's a perfect cloud OS and there is evidence the industry. and he's mature...

    2 - management...

Just leave the capacity... or technical... Details... at the end of the day... an organization is managed and maintained by engineers... or admins... and not by the architects... then how easy to train a person... How fast it can adopt the vmware... and how effective is the management of the layer... the capablities automation... that means a lot.

3 - layer hpervisor... or the virtualization layer

all other vendors like hyperv... Citrix... kvm... etc... all have need of assistance of the BONE... the VMkernel is a Scheduler task very evolved... lying and coded... and built for one JOB to run VM... so less number of CODE in the software... and less bug and less Vulnerability

    4-company characteristics

Everyone says and says that they have all the features... but how many of these features is proven and recognized and solid in the production environment.

features of vmware as HA, DTS, SVMOTION, DPM, DRS,... technical of memory reclaimation FT... NIOC, SIOC... VAAI... VDAP... vDS etc... A lot.. even a unique feature of DPM will be enough to save money in cooling and electricity costs... and it is worth to invest in VMware... but how many other sellers have these and proven... these vmware features are not some features... they are real innovation and cutting edge technology...

5 - journey to the cloud...

Everyone says that they are cloud... and they can... I'm surpised... others they have yet to reach maturity and has proved in the industry... in the VIRTUALIZATION layer then how is it that they can claim... they want in the cloud.

    6 - support

It is the key... who is responsible... or head... or who will take possession if a problem has occurred in the critical production...?

in the Opensource... no body will take... this part, solutions may work or may not... it will be a great solution or you can screw your system... It is therefore a GROPING and LUCK... If there is a bug in the code that will correct? will wait for you to X days or hours until what someone gives a free solution in the internet... for critical system...? Here, you will lose the company... for businesses, they have ALS, and they will solve.

    7-business continuity & disaster recovery

What happened if my enitre SITE is down? how fast can I bring my services...? .. is it possible to create an ACTIVE/ACTIVE sites... it's the two sites are primary. .. the answer to these are VMware SRM... just a FEW CLICKS of MOUSE...!

To run a busines... These are very critical... otherwise you will lose the business...

While there in the open... battery and if something is there... then how fast it can... Can RTO be achieved? -you will not get a perfect answer for this.

now in the openstack... it is a great software... but who will customize... it... and who will support... train... and how are you going to handle... watch... will it give features as including vmware gives...? ... at what speed you can adopt in your IT... ? and a lot of questions always there to ask and you will get almost no response...

These software and solutions can be managed and edited... by GIANTS like GOOGLE, facebook... Rackspace... etc.they have the manpower... time... capital... etc... purpose for others... it is not possible...

now all these openstack... opennebula... KVM... it's free... great... OT of savings... At the end of the DAY, who is responsible if I lose the COMPANY?

But VMware is expensive... it's true... then who cares... ? If I want to win an F1 race, I need car Ferari... and with a normal car FORD or FIAT... you can't win. the RACE. Here the COST is not the issue... and no body cares... What matters here is... What technology... how it stable is... with which I CAN win a RACE...?

There is a lot of technique... and other comparisons in a meaningful... These are just my thoughts... and I'm not BIASED... also. From now on... in terms of COST, others can beat VMware... and everyone says this also... But the interms technology... they have the LAST WORD.

  • VMware Player 5 can not install on Win XP feedback tools

I have VMware player 5.0.0 build-812388 running on Ubuntu 11.10 (core 3.0.0 - 26-generic). I use it to run a Windows XP Professional SP3 client.

I used to have the VMware tools installed on this prompt, but after a recent update (I don't know which), I noticed that I was getting warning dialog boxes on my graphical configuration. I uninstalled VMware tools (via Add/Remove Programs) and reinstalled (via the player's Virtual Machine > install VMware Tools...), but it does not appear to be installed. There is no VMware Tools applet in the control panel and no icon in the status bar. I have tried different combinations of uninstall, reboot, reinstall, repair, etc., but he is still missing.

How can I properly install VMware Tools in the virtual machine again?

jason__h wrote: I have VMware player 5.0.0 build-812388...  There is no VMware Tools applet in the control panel and no icon in the status bar. I have tried different combinations of uninstall, reboot, reinstall, repair, etc., but he is still missing.

VMware has removed the applet of the control panel and system Notification in VMware Player 5 and VMware Workstation 9 icon so that you see is normal and expected.  Some features of VMware Tools are available in the configurations of the Virtual Machine on the host side.

How can I properly install VMware Tools in the virtual machine again?

If you have already uninstalled/reinstalled you don't need to do anything.  If you can drag and drop files between the computers in office then VMware Tools are installed and working.  Also if the unit and the VMware shared folders work (for supported operating systems) once again here are the signs that VMware Tools are installed and working.

  • VMware Server 2 migration

Hello group, we set off on virtualization, we used until present time server 2, checking on these pages, I've read about free vSphere.

I downloaded ISO and the customer. When you start to use it, it says I have 60 day trial.

Can please briefly explain you what is free and what is not?

    Thanks in advance.

    FM

The basic vSphere 4/5 hypervisor is free, who has at least as many features as VMware Server 2.

However, you must still apply for a license (which is free) to get rid of the warning of 60 days.  Follow these steps:

  • Exchange 2010 (HA) on VMWare

    Hi all

Can someone please highlight the options/limitations HA to Exchange 2010 on VMWare ESX 3. 5Infrastructure. I read on DAG, but I do not think that it would be supported by Microsoft (on VMWare) the ESX servers are grouped together and using vmotion, HA and DRS and it would be helpful to know whether to use a feature of VMware/exchange to satisfy this requirement.

We believe using a 3rd party cloud product/service which consists of a web front end bespok application (described above the ' architecture that we do not control / manage underlying) and so we can only assign virtual disks to a single virtual machine so I would also like to know if I get around this without using a shared virtual machine storage...

    Your contribution is appreciated.

With a view to support Exchange can be deployed on a Cluster of ESX from VMware and be 100% taken in charge by Microsoft and VMware.  If you choose to set up in the Exchange 2010 DAG environment you can still maintain support by Microsoft and VMware by disabling the HA/DRS features for only members of the DAG.  It's strictly a requirement of support, the use of DAG in the breast in a VMware ESX cluster works very well on the technical side of things.  You mention ESX 3.5 so I'll call that in ESX 3.5 VMware HA/DRS should be disabled at the level of the cluster, ESX, ESX 4.0 update 1 changed cela to allow HA/DRS ESX cluster-wide and only requires deactivation at the virtual machine level.

Regarding storage shared; in a DAG environment only assign you storage to a single virtual machine, there is no storage shared so that shouldn't be a problem there.  However, by VMware support, that data must reside on fibre channel attached storage, no VMFS, or iSCSI.  I have included some links below that will help better understand support of Exchange on VMware solutions.

  • VMware workstation support MSR IA32_DEBUGCTL

    Hello

I have a code that needs to branch tracing in the Linux kernel. It does not seem that the MSR IA32_DEBUGCTL which must be set to use the MSR LASTBRANCHFROMIP (among other LBR MSR), will run on vmware workstation. Specifications intel, all MSR all the stuff of debugging, including exception can be emulated using the bitmap MSR, among other things. Does anyone know if there is a way to activate these features under vmware? Or is simply not applied code? I noticed some MSR as sysenter work very well. If I try to read IA32_DEBUGCTL_MSR it always shows 0, even if I write a value in this first using wrmsr.

Any official response on that would be appreciated, thanks.

MSR IA32_DEBUGCTL is not virtualized in VMware products.  Entries are ignored and it still reads like a zero.

As the author of the test VRVAP matrix / guidelines, I am happy to answer:

"Unmanaged" is a valid state for VMware Tools and indicates that some other mechanisms that the classic "interactive/scriptable" VMware Tools installer engine is responsible for maintaining components ' tools '.

It's what I expected to see most of the new virtual appliances, subject to the evaluation/validation via the ready program virtual VMware.

Usually the State "unmanaged" is triggered by one of the three cases:

    • Open VM tools

    • VMware Studio 2 supplied with OSP

The salient bit is at the end of the TC 2570 VMware Tools - General.

The basic set of operating system components invited side feature called "VMware Tools" MUST be present, activated and functioning properly. Additional information defining this requirement are covered in case of test 2571 by 2579. The version number and compilation VMware specific ABI to use Tools are not prescribed.
