File corrupt, missing
Hi, I tried the steps about the error message on system32/config/system. These are the problems I encountered. As instructed, I arrived to the Windows installation and typed 'r '. At the recovery console command prompt, I entered the first choice, 1, which has been given, then entered "md tmp. I messed up and it does more, but he said, "file exists already", so I retyped it "md tmp1.
To back up a second, the first time I tried, when I entered the first command line, it says "access denied", but the other lines were copied once I entered them.
The first order, I went after the "delete" c orders reading, "cannot find the file specified".
On the second try is when I couldn't enter a correct file.
I noticed at first, after that I'm going home 'r', I give myself three choices, to set up Windows XP, to repair or to get out. If I choose 'install now', it reinstalls I need without deleting my files?
If you think I should stay just to try to fix it, how can I create another file to copy?
If you are talking about a message from startp XP that looks like this:
Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
And if the steps mention you are article Microsoft KB307545, I stopped at the moment and read and instead implement the following process.
I hope that it is not too late after all this tent...
Do, or do not. There is no test.

Corrupt des/windows system32\config\system missing file? How to fix without losing my data? Support Sony says full recovery of the system, but I'll lose data and sounds very drastic!e star,
For your Windows CD, which would have been provided by the PC manufacturer. Sometimes they have a partition on the hard disk that contains the recovery software and can be viewed during the start up. You should check with the manufacturer of PC for more information about the recovery options. Also if they did not provide a CD sometimes they offer the recovery media for sale. The problem here is that something has happened to the ntoskrnl.exe file. It is difficult to replace just this file because the version that's on a CD may be different for the version that you had on your system. If replace you it with another that it could potentially cause other problems.
At this point, you will need to do a repair install or restore clean install\factory. Mike - Engineer Support Microsoft Answers

Hello
I wonder if anyone can help me, whenever I turn on my laptop, that an error message appears and I can't access windows, I tried to figure out what to do, but have had no luck
That's what the message reads:Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
You can try to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original configuration of the CD-ROM.
Select 'r' in the first screen to start repair. To be honest I'm not sure CD is the original installation CD-Rom that I need to fix the system would the included recovery CD or a CD diffferent?
If someone could help me shed some light on the situation, I would be very gratefulThank you.
Hi Binta,
The repair option is available from the recovery console, which is located on the installation of Microsoft XP CD. However, I think your laptop was an OEM installation in which case you should have the Toshiba Recovery CD instead. They lack the recovery console and it would therefore be necessary to restore the whole system of Toshiba drives.
This will actually format your HARD drive and then re-install the system as it was during the first delivery the laptop. Unfortunately, this will replace any of your data unless you have it in another partition on your drive HARD or on some other backup media.
The recovery CD will allow your to re - install the entire system or partition the HARD drive first, so that you can keep your data separate from the operating system.
The recovery process can be started by pressing the 'C' key when starting the laptop. After the restart you will need to re - install any additional software that you might have, and you will also need to download updates that are available on the website of Microsift update.

Have you tried booting in safe mode?
If it is possible, then you can try to use the System Restore tool under Programs Accessories System Tools, you should find.Try to roll back the OS to the beginning. Well, if this procedure doesn't help then as said jmatthews you save files on the other computer and reinstall the operating system.

My pc says that windows does not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM. It is said it can be repaired by using the original installation CD, but we do not have. Any ideas please?
The file is missing or corrupt is one of your files in the system registry.
By far, the best way to recover from this is to go to another computer and create a free Hirens Boot CD.
Download Hirens: <> http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/ > (link at the bottom of the icon of the disk)
Hirens CD burning <> http://www.hirensbootcd.org/burning/ >Once you create the CD, and then start your system of problem with this CD. In the first window, select "Mini Windows XP" and wait for the system to start. When it starts, go to the Hirens Boot CD menu and select
Register-> Registry Restore Wizard.
then follow the prompts. This wizard will return a copy of your registry database from backups that are stored with your system restore points. After the restoration, stop, remove the CD and restart. When you start your system, it is recommended to perform a system restore operation to ensure the consistency of your system

HP mini 110-1129nr with windows xp home edition, on said boot computer could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt \windows\system32\config\system computer has no cd/dvd drive. Computer does not load in safe mode, I ran disk hard main test self test it says completion test: failure, check the status: 7 (filled with the read element of the test failed). Help.
You need an external DVD drive to get the repair will.
Also the device you own does not seem to have built in the recovery partition. I'm not sure about later versions of this machine, however, it is best to check with HP.
The problem is that there is a corruption of the registry on your OS or the system could not find where the registry files are due to system files or boot corrupted file.
A repair can be made with an external DVD, the worst case, is that if the repair doesn't work you reinstall Windows.

\systrem32\hal.dll What can I do with this message:
Windows didn't start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\System32|hal.dll, please reinstall a copy of the above file. Thank you

In Windows Vista & 7:

In addition, if the file is actually missing, you can try to boot from a UNIX / Linux Live CD like Knoppix and add/replace the file manually with a file from another PC running THE SAME VERSION OF WINDOWS!
If you are not good with computers, you should ignore this option because it could cause serious problems. If you still want to try, and there is a hal.dll file in
\system32\ BACK IT UP. You have to put back in place. Let us know if it works.

HITACHI Travelstar hard drive 80 gigNice day
I'm getting this ' file is missing or damaged:------WINDOWS-SYSTEM32-CONFIG-SYSTEM ' error and Windows does not start in the F8 boot options. When I disable the auto reboot, I get a BSOD 51 registry error, consistent with the file "missing or corrupt" error Surprisingly "Recovery Console" works so I used to run chkdsk. This has not solved the problem, but even once, surprisingly, the utility reported no fixed error. Ok. I do research online (using another computer of course) and check out the many tips that I copy some files in my "c:\windows\repair" folder in the folder 'system '. Before I had time to do that, however, I found an article from Microsoft stating that this should not be done if you have an OEM System... what I'm doing. Apparently, hives system on these OEM installed OS set other passwords that can permanently block you on your records if you use this method. Thanks for the warning. My system restore disc is nothing more than a tool of re-insall OS that will wipe all my data in the process, and this is not desirable. Currently, I see again all my data on the drive by using the "recovery console". I'm ready to thread the needle on this one in the hope of re - access the operating system, although in some limited capacity. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
When you run chkdsk in RC, did you use the /r switch? This is the key! In other words, this should be the command:
Chkdsk /r
(there is a space before the slash)
Moreover, KB307545 can be run safely on most OEM XP installations. Of course, nothing is guaranteed 100%.
Before you do this or else, you really must ensure all data is stored safely. One way to do this is to start on a live Linux CD and then copy the files to an external hard drive. Another way is to connect the problem hard drive into a working PC and copy the files in this way. This could be done by the servo drive or with an adapter like this:

Hello
Please help me solve this computer. I am an elderly person, not technical and I need to fix it myself if possible. I studied the system widely. I don't have the skills or knowledge needed to implement a fix.
What worries me, is that my files have been damaged by the problems on this computer. I don't know how to say.
The system was custom built, not a branded computer. I have 3 drives, all Originals Microsoft. XPMCE disks (there are 2) say 2005 on them, the 3rd disc says Version 2005 updates. He said not cumulative on the third disc. I don't know what that means... I don't know there was also a cumulative 2006 for XP... final. XP Pro is 2002.
I installed updates as much as I could, but am stuck with SP2, and I know that the system is vulnerable because of the missing updates. I want to fix non-destructive if possible.
Langa claimed it was possible, but he did not speak MCE, but Pro, and they are not the same. I know not what integrators were not allowed to provide (food?) discs with this particular Version. I've never done of all disks (experience, is what you get right after that you need), but I'm not sure that the system was perfect when I got it... I don't have any other type of disk. I learned that one must save or image the system, so it can be restored.
The system starts and runs. But the SP3 update can "t be installed. A program to work indicating that a dll file is missing. In addition, the system restore stopped working. I was told the system restore often confuses things and can 'break' installed AV and perhaps other programs, due to conflicts between Windows restoration files and programs that are not part of Windows in terms of time.
I've always run AntiVirus and MBAM. I have the instructions step by step for what I could try.
I would like to find a list of parameters that should be enabled or disabled in different areas... so I can check that they are correct. The area called services and to uninstall Windows components, I worry.
I have not really requires... because I don't know how to get the information on this computer. I ran the Scan Now command and he said I should put in discs... There are 3? I'm afraid to do anything until I have found on the backup and the possibility of corruption of my files. I'll have to print files, rather than risk losing things. My drive back to stop working, don't know if it is related to the lack of files or settings to be wrong.
Thank you for reading this... I tried to write paragraphs, to make it a bit clearer, I hope that it appears that way.

Try to run, type: cmd cmd type: verificateur auditor files SFC SCANNOW once windows starts, insert the
XP CD, leave the screen. The File Checker runs automatically, at least with XP home & PRO. Also check this
link for info MCE & SFC. http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/909059
In addition, sfc is thru, remove xp cd, type: CHKDSK C: /F agree to restart, exit cmd, restart the pc.
If the problems persist, open the event viewer & see what problems or specific files are always in need of attention...
