  See a strange problem with only a Windows 2008 R2 model.   john99, thanks for the links. I went through all (again), one by one. The last link kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic showed me what helped. I've renamed "firefox.exe" to "firefox1.exe" and was able to use firefox.

  It made me suspect the firewall or malicious software. I ran a Malwarebytes full scan, zero problems detected. I have pored on the entries of windows firewall, the "Windows Firewall with advanced security" view and also the simple control panel view. The only mention of Firefox is that I continue to add and remove to allow firefox through.

  Here I knew what was going on, but for now, I can at least use firefox. How frustrating!

  Contact the manufacturer of your laptop as there must be a way to restore the computer. There may be a hidden restore partition.

  We cannot verify that Windows Update is causing the problem, I suggest to install the Windows updates one by one and make sure that Windows Update is causing the problem.
