Full encryption of the disk, hard disk password?

Hey,.

I just got my T530 (2359CTO) and need to encrypt the hard drive. When I bought it, I opted (among other reasons) for Windows 8 Professional because it comes with BitLocker. I then discovered that some ThinkPads have hard disks that support hardware encryption (FDE).

I tried to figure out if the mine has this feature, but had no luck. The BIOS gives me the option to set a password for hard drive, but I'm not positive that it crypt actually the hard drive with this setting. Could someone shed some light on

(a) how to determine if my hard drive takes in charge the hardware encryption

(b) how to activate

Thank you!

disk password is not related to the disc encryption. Your computer has been configured to order. If you purchased the Lenovo machine, unless you specify FDE, you haven't

If you have the business version of vista (or its equivalent), it comes with a full disk encryption application called bit locker.

"versions of Windows Vista enterprise-class also come with complete the BitLocker disk encryption (Note: BitLocker is available in versions of Windows Vista for Microsoft Software Assurance customers)." Like commercial software, BitLocker provides protection against the "oops" factor - lost or stolen systems. Windows Vista also supports encrypted file system, which offers additional guarantees against the internal threats that are more likely to result in a violation of real data, not just data disclosure-based regulation. • Portege M400 - new HARD drive retains the old HARD drive password?

I have a Portege M400 and I want to move my current hard drive with a new one.
My current hard drive is password protected (I know the password).
    My questions are:

If I switch to a new hard drive, a new retains the old password or not?

Can I use the old drive with an external enclosure as an external drive, or it is impossible?

I already tried to delete the password for hard drive with the methods presented on this forum by going into the BIOS, but version 3.8 has no option to remove the HDD password and I think that it is impossible to remove it.

Please answer only if you have experience in cases like this, I don't want to spend money on the new hard drive and not be able to use as primary.

    Hey Buddy

    Please check this thread:

You can remove the HDD password (if it s you known) in the BIOS.
In the field "User password" tab and just enter the old password. If you do want to set the new password, and then press "Enter".

  • Reset hard drive password?

    Hello world

I have an old T60, I intend to give my mother to check e-mail and look at pictures. The laptop works very well (with the exception of a dead screen, I just replaced). I have a small isue, however. There is a hard drive password that appears when I start it. I know the password (which is not the problem), but I would like to remove them before I give it to my mother. When I go into the BIOS, it says that the hard drive and power on passwords are not enabled.

The drive is a Hitachi travelstar I transferred my x 61 now dead. I could be misremembering, but I think I put the disk password originally hard when the drive was the x 61. However, given that the password is disabled in the BIOS on the T60, why it keep asking me for it?

    Thank you.

Problem solved. Stupidly, I do not see that the hard disk password was indeed enabled in the BIOS, but for some reason that I was looking at the order of the day (Password Recovery), which was disabled and thought it was about the hard drive password. In any case, I've disabled. Now I have just the problem with chkdsk runs do not.

  • On the utility of record pass-protected when the disk is encrypted

    Dear all,

I recently put my hands on a new internal drive SSHD and decided to quantify using filevault. Keep important documents on my mac, I used to create folders of password-protected using a disk with disk utility image. Now, my question is simple: is there a utility on the creation of these encrypted files as all the disk itself is already encrypted? This would add valuable new protection?

Thank you very much in advance,

    Richard

Data sheet: mid - 09 13 MBP "2.26 GHz with internal WD 1 TB SSHD

If your disc is encrypted, then the only way that anyone (including YOU) can look at the contents of your Volume is to provide your password to disk, which we hope is a long and strong password, not only a short practice. Depending on how paranoid you are, perhaps you fell there is additional value on encryption more away from the additional items. But for extra security, the password for your encrypted disks in addition should not be readily available on your drive any just-encypted.

Most users have very good success with encrypted Volumes. They manage to protect their records from the person mostly likely to access - themselves. DO NOT ENCRYPT YOUR DRIVE WITHOUT CREATING A RELIABLE BACKUP! The encryption is strong - there is no 'rescue' for an encrypted Volume that goes wrong for any reason, including failure of the drive.

  • In which directory of the disk hard will be stored bookmarks?

Generally all bookmarks are stored in the folder 'My documents' 'Favorites '. Everything in the hard disk of the system, usually referred to as the 'C' drive
Whence the Mozilla Firefox saves his favorites? Thank you

Firefox stores the bookmarks and the browser history in places.sqlite and either use a HTML file or creates a backup of the HTML for the bookmarks.

There are 10 daily rotating backups of JSON in the bookmarkbackups folder in the Firefox profile folder, one for each day when Firefox is started.

You can make Firefox create an automatic HTML (bookmarks.html) backup when you exit Firefox, if you set the pref to true on the subject browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML: config page.

The backup is created by default in the profile folder bookmarks.html, but you can set the file name and the path through the pref browser.bookmarks.file on the topic: config page.

This pref does not exist by default, and you may need to create a new pref browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML string and set the value to the full path of the file backup bookmarks.

Note: an HTML backup preserves tags and annotations, to lose them if you need to import the backup HTML.

  • How to remove the disk HARD passwordon Portege R500?

    Hello

do you know how to remove the HARD drive password? I know the current password, but if I try to remove it by changing your current password to a blank password, it does not work.
    It has password always news.

    Thank you

    Hello

I hope that you use the correct and just HARD drive password because it of necessary to remove and delete the existing HARD disk password.
If you have forgot the password for HARD drive then the HARD drive should be locked and you would not be able to unlock the HARD drive!

Generally, the HARD drive password can be deleted in the BIOS.
Please ensure that another password would be removed too.

I found a forum thread useful on a password disk HARD similar question:
    http://forums.computers.Toshiba-Europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?MessageID=66386𐍒

According to the information published by the user jonr17 you must first make sure that all other like BIOS passwords, user and supervisor passwords are removed.
Then try to remove the HDD from the BIOS password.

    Good bye

  • After Vista update cannot find the external hard drive, AutoPlay does not work, and new unusable disk appears under my computer

After Vista update cannot find the external hard drive, AutoPlay does not work, and new unusable disk appears under my computer. Also I can't 'manage' my computer because I do not have "permissions". I tried a fix he 45071 and it did nothing.

Applications, (Norton and McAfee) (including free evaluation versions are notorious for not not upgrade (or uninstalling) itself.) If NIS has been installed for 3 years, you have NIS update at least once and maybe twice (e.g., NIS 2009 > NIS 2010 > NIS 2011).

[You may want to print these instructions for reference offline. If a step said to reboot, reboot.]

    1. download the Norton Removal Tool, save it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

    2. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).

    3. After completing some you have a copy of your handy product key, uninstall all Norton software (including LiveUpdate and everything Norton Add ons) viaControl Panel | Programs | Uninstall a program (or Control Panel |) Programs and features, if you are using the classic view).

4 IMPORTANT! -Online activate Windows Firewall immediately after the restart.

NB: Now you're "working without a net": no to ANYTHING else online (e.g., navigation, reading e-mail, chat) until you have completed step #7 below!

    5. right click on the file that you saved in step #1 above, and then select run as administrator.  DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then restart.

    6. do a clean install of NIS 2011 (using your product ID, if need be) & reboot. CF. http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080514162318EN

NOTE: Do NOT activate or install additional modules of Norton (for example, Norton Anti-Phishing) immediately.

    7. manually and repeatedly run LiveUpdate (Norton) until you get a prompt "no update more".

    8. open Internet Explorer (only) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 & run the difficulty.

    9. open Internet Explorer (only) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 & run that set it by DEFAULT and modes and AGGRESSIVE. [1]

    10. restart once again & test.

NB: Installation KB971029 disables AutoRun/autoplay on USB connected but not 'brilliant media' external drives (i.e., CDs & DVDs). See http://blogs.technet.com/b/msrc/archive/2011/02/08/deeper-insight-into-the-security-advisory-967940-update.aspx

  • How to copy "c" for the largest hard disk drive?

My 'c' drive is full, and I need to move to a bigger drive. They do a free program like superduper for mac? I don't want to go through the hassle of reinstalling xp and everything.  My xp disk is one of the originals and it takes forever to do all updates.  I was amazed when I found a FREE Mac program that copied the disc to start on another drive, nothing for mac is free.  Now, to find the same thing for windows.
    Kurt

my suggestion is probably the easiest method without hassle by simply installing this new HDD as slave disk because all motherboards can handle at least two hard drives.

(Incidentally, hard drives have few riders can designate the device as a master or slave).

the main drive with the operating system is the master, and you can leave it as what.  No software purchase, no worries with imaging or backup and no formatting.

the second hard drive, IE. your new hard drive will be the slave drive.  then, you can move all your personal files from the master to the slave.

by moving and separating your personal data system data, you relieve your master drive with as the abundance of data and establish a methodology that will preserve your personal files where system drive is damaged.

If you do not use the method described above, I can share the steps to moving your personal files on the hot spare.

  • How to restore vista OPS hard drive external bitlocker encrypted after main disk failure

I am running Vista Ultimate and my main hard drive is encrypted by Bitlocker.  I use the backup utility in Vista for backup of that my drive hard main set on a USB attached hard drive which is also encrypted by Bitlocker.  In a case of failure of the primary hard drive and installing a new hard drive, how can I restore my main hard drive (the new drive) to the USB attached bitlocker encrypted external hard? My vista ultimate OPS has been upgraded to the origin of vista home premium and so I did not have the ultimate Setup DVD disk.  I have the disk of vista Home premium.

Create a recovery disk that the restoration of the backup complete on this topic option (including family Vista drive premium will be not because this option is only available on the Enterprise and Ultimate versions)-should not do anything on bitlocker on it (which will take care of itself during the restore process unless you configure to use a flash drive for protection - then the flash player is also required {but) not a recovery disk different}).  You can make a bootable recovery disk by using http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/ with burning software like: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/active-isoburner.html and, of course, a blank CD (including backup complete PC Restore).  Be sure to get the drive to boot correctly - there are several ways to make records and this requires a way for it to work (but those that are included in the manual or on the website).

For more information, here's a great article on bitlocker with Vista.   It does not exactly cover your question, but it is very instructive in the process and the technology (and might help you if you are facing a problem on the road) and its good information to have if you use bitlocker (which can be difficult and can cause problems of recovery if you do not just because of the extra complication of encryption (backup and restore). http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2008.06.bitlocker.aspx.

    I hope this helps.
