"Grinds away" for an hour at the start of the computer. No idea what is running.

I have a HP Compaq Presario with Windows XP Home SP3.  Whenever I start it takes about 1 hour prior to analysis or research or other stops access to the hard drive.  I use Microsoft Security Essentials to my anti-malware and I have MS office 2003.  I went to the HP Service and they did some maleware scans and tech stuff but it still grinds away when I boot.  Is it possible to see what programs are running that a no-tech can read so I can maybe turn off?  I spent in msconfig services and start and off most everything except microsoft stuff.  I went to the process from the Task Manager, but it only shows "sub" running programs. Any ideas it might be?

How much RAM does your computer have?

When your computer is running out of RAM physical, then it is full of virtual memory which is stored on your disk.  When this happens, your drive is constantly active, and the access that take microseconds in RAM eventually take milliseconds from the disc (about 1000 x).  My son has an old XP with 512 MB RAM machine that takes more than 1/2 hour to start because of it.  It quickly starts in Safe Mode, however.  In my humble OPINION, if you have sub 2GByte of RAM, it's time to upgrade your RAM.

  • When I burn CD for my use on the computer, sometimes the order of the songs are returned, starting with the last song first.

    * Original title: Windows Media player

When I burn CD for my use on the computer, sometimes the order of the songs are returned, starting with the last song first.  This is the CD, or I do something wrong?  This isn't an ongoing problem... most of the time it's ok.  Can I change the order manually. If Yes, where and how.

    Thank you

    Lee

Lee - there are a number of possibilities. First of all, it depends whether you burn audio disks or data - if they are audio discs, you can check and rearrange the order of songs in the burn list - if necessary - before you start burning. If you drag multiple files to the burn list quite often the last track you clicked on will go upward, so I wonder if it is what can happen. Back with a little more detail if I not quite correctly interpreted the problem. Best regards, Ric.

    Hello!

I had a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 for quite awhile and discovered that I need a new facility (the computer refuses to Windows to run at all). I picked up my installation disc and everything, only to find out that someone stole completely he reapply. I am unsure weather or not it is enabled or whatever it is. I tried to call Microsoft technical support and they said to go to the retailer I bought since then, but the retailer in question no longer exists. I'm just screwed?

    Thanks for your help!

You can retrieve the product key, and then use it to re-download a new copy:

Here are four utilities, which can display your product keys if they are still there:

First of all, we will try if we can start in safe mode.

Safe mode starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers. Startup programs do not work in safe mode, and only the basic drivers needed to start Windows are installed.

    1. to start mode safe mode with networking, restart the computer and press the F8 key for about four to five times. You will see "Safe Mode with network" listed in the advanced options of Windows.

    2. Select "Safe Mode with network" and then press ENTER.

Access the link below for more information on how to start in "Safe Mode with Networking":

  • Windows 7 for Lenovo G50-70 - the computer will not boot from the CD

    Hello world

I hope that someone here will be able to help

I bought a new laptop with Windows 8.1. I want to install Windows 7 on that I know well because I can't use the new windows. I changed the settings in the BIOS to get the machine to boot from the CD, but it won't be fair. I also tried to restore the system to boot from the CD, but it installs just the Windows pre-installed, new instead. Also, I can't access the CD from the drive while all my other computers are capable of (what is strange)

    Can someone help, please?

    See you soon

    PS. : I can turn on the computer through the small "boot botton" on the side and select the DVD drive to boot from. But this is not followed by the message "Press any key to boot from CD" and the computer starts just W8 yet;

I contacted customer service and followed your advice. They refused to help him on the ground that there nothing wrong with the machine in their opinion, and since I wanted to change operating system. All preinstalled spyprogrammes Lenovo has been erased with this downgrade. So far, I've owned a laptop computer brand new and expensive for a year I used only to waste my time, trying to make it work, that was not why I bought it in the first place. What a RIP-OFF!

  • Scanner does not work for all users on the computer Windows 7

Photosmart 7510 Scanner does not work.  My scanner has the habit of work.   Now it does not for one of the three users on my Windows 7 desktop.

I spent over 3 hours on the phone with HP.   They had me restart the computer, Plug and unplug the printer, reinstall the software twice under different names. The software depending on what user id, it is installed under allows access to the scanner/printer to one or more users.  The scanner works with Windows Paint software for all three nicknames.

HP response is that some user control prevents the scanner software, who used to work on all three nicknames on the computer, which now works on one or more of the users.  They couldn't tell me which user control need changing.

The HP solution is to restore my system when I could scan for all users of three.   I don't want to do that.   Does anyone have a better solution?

The real problem is HP error messages.   When I click on scan a document, there is no answer.  Nothing happened.

Then I tried to scan using Windows Fax and Scan.   I got an error message which helped me locate the source of the error.   I was able to fix the problem without creating a new user account.  I had deleted bu error the file MY Document.   Restore this file fixes the problem.
