GUID or not for use with time machine

I am about to format a new external hard drive to save the backups and other things. On the road I can use for Time Machine, but not now. I wonder whether or not to use setting GUID in the form for the reader, because it will allow me to make a disc bootable option. Is there a reason NOT to use the GUID + OS X extended journaled on any drive that you reformat? (I ask because it is an option. A few posts on this site I get the idea that unless I want a windows or linux on readable disk, which I did not, GUID is the way to go. I don't know if I chose actually on another X - HD I got recently and am using for backups TM. I don't know, because I tried to make a bootable partition / clone and was not able to boot from this partition.)

Secondly, I think to partition the hard drive into two GB 1 pieces in case I want to use 1 semester for backups online TM subsequently and so keep those separated from other files. Is it advisable or not? (One of the advantages are the possibility to delete backups TM: you just reformat the partition where they live.)

I could use the GUID for a partition and not on the other or just for the two (it seems that the GUID is the recommended way to get Mac products). *

Thanks in advance.

* Assume that you use a GUID. Is there a problem with the help of a hard drive without formatting?

Since you're using ONLY this disc with your Mac, then GUID partition map and HFS + filesystem (OS X Extended (journaled)) to a volume of Time Machine

Why do bad for yourself.

It is very good.  In addition to El Capitan OS X will be ONE partition a disk GUID, it's another reason for the use of the GUID.

NOTE: If you want to put other files on this disk, will you of have saved them in another location.  And all THE data that you care, or would have cost a lot of time to recreate should be use 3-2-1. backup policy.

3 copies (the original is the 1st copy)

utility for 2 different devices to backup with 2 different so that a bug in one does not affect the other, and a faulty device does not affect the other.

1 copy off site, so that you always have your data even after a natural disaster or theft

And put the data and backup on the same disk is a "No No", as the loss of the aircraft loses the original and the backup at the same time.

  • I used my new 4 to Seagate Backup Plus on my laptop. He said he had to erase files to make it compatible with Time Machine. Now to 4 is full and cannot be recognized. What should I do?

I'm on OSX El Capitan 10.11.3 and I've never used before to Seagate Backup Plus 4. I wasn't able to put the files using the Macbook Pro. It was purchased only a few hours ago.

After plugging in, he asked if I would use it for Time Machine, and it should be deleted so that it is compatible with Time Machine. This is my first time to use an external hard drive on my laptop, and it is also my first attempt to use Time Machine.

My external hard drive appears only on the disk utility now. Help, please.

In the above image, you click the physical drive. It does not show the available space. You will need to click on the item "Untitled" below to see the space actually available. "Untitled" is the real partition on the disk.

    Hi David,

Time Machine is a backup utility in built for the Mac operating system that works with your Mac and a (sold separately) external hard drive or Time Capsule airport. You can go through the article to get the idea of base on the application.

  • A few days, I bought a mac mini which I transferred the data and programs with time machine: programs have been updated except for iMovie, and now it seems that I have to pay for the update: possible? What I am doing wrong?

A few days ago, I bought a mac mini and I transferred all my data and programs with time machine: all programs have been updated but iMovie (7.1.4)... However, it seems that, to update to the latest version, I have to pay to download on Appstore: is it possible? what I am doing wrong?

If it were a new mac mini, you need already installed 10.1 iMovie.  Otherwise, but you already have iMovie 9 registered version to your Apple ID, you can upgrade to version 10 for free, but if (as it appears) is an earlier version then you have to buy version 10.

"I try to avoid cutting each line twice.  This is double the cost.

I hear you. I was there for more than 30 years.

There are very few single line fonts. And most of the people is the property of specific burning software (i.e. the TTF or OTF fonts). Apart from these burning programs, what had to happen is for a foundry of fonts specifically design a single font. And, from what I've heard of these smelters (for the last 30 + years), the market is too small. I'm not saying that they are correct, it's just that it is their perception.

    Good luck

  • I can't get my new WD external hard drive to work with Time Machine.

My Seagate 1 TB external hard drive, connected to my Airport Extreme, use the USB port, was completed (it stores up to 3 1 iMac and MBP), so I bought a Western Digital 2 TB hard drive to replace it. I formatted correctly, connected to my MBP, then connected to the Airport Extreme. When I opened the time Machine, it didn't appear. By selecting "Set up the new TimeCapsule" open Airport utility. By clicking on the router button gave me change. By clicking on the "Record" button showed my new hard drive. The "setup" button is grayed out, unless I unchecked and double-checked all of the options. He warned me that I would be offline for a while, but it did nothing; My wife MBP and MBP my son not a never lose their connection to the internet, and I lose mine, either.

My Mac guy, who never met a problem he couldn't fix it, is puzzled. So I am. We tried all the usual ideas, restart my MBP, restart the Airport Extreme, reformat the external hard drive, with different numbers of partitions (and Yes, I chose the GUID), but we can not simply Time Machine to connect with the hard drive. It is a Western Digital My Passport Ultra. This external hard drive is not compatible with Time Machine?

What version is your AE? Backup is supported only on the sector of Tower model.

You are self feeding Ultra Passport? It really must be external powered... or plugged into a powered hub.

My passport readers have been consistent in the past... but sometimes strange things... That is, they can change the USB chip without warning, resulting in questions. The USB hub can help.

There is also something... Plug the USB key into one of your computers and start backup TM on this... proceed very long... but we need to start... Cancel backup... and then plug it into AE and see what happens.

  • Restoring my data to a new SSD with Time Machine

I'm going to buy a new SSD hard drive, and I backed up all my data in Time Machine on an external hard drive. Is it possible to restore all my data only through Time Machine? I have a bootable USB key with El Capitan on that, I'm not worried about the operating system. Wouldn't time machine recognize my computer as a completely different machine? This treatment?

If it is possible how I would go about it?

Your new SSD must be in the format GUID extended journeled using disk utility. Boot into Recovery (R command).

Install OS X and use the Time machine to restore all your data.

    ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

It is stored in the file package VM, with everything else. So I think you're wondering if you can save the snapshot itself, without having to save the rest of the files for this virtual machine. The answer is probably not "easily", although I'm sure that others with more experience can give you a more detailed answer.

The long and short if this is probably: If all you want to do, on a regular basis, save the files that are inside the virtual machine that have been changed (for example Money files), you must store them outside of the virtual machine (usually on a shared folder). But make sure you back up the virtual machine itself at least once, and probably whenever you install something again. But of course it depends on how paranoid, you will lose your hard drive (and paranoia is not always a bad thing, aty least in this case).

  • HP: unlock OEM windows 7 for use with another computer?

    Hello

I recently got a HP computer with an OEM windows installation 7. After the machine (fatal hardware failure), I tried to use the windows key to install it on another computer. However, the key is an OEM product and would not activate, so after talking to microsoft they sent me here to ask if the manufacturer could "unlock" the key for use with another computer (that I build from scratch).

So all this possible? Or do I have to buy a new license?

Okay, Ive talked to HP and microsoft and it turns out that the key has been blocked (pirates). So much for the purchase of second hand.

  • E-mail restoration with time machine

    Goodday!

I have a problem with the email backups in Time Machine. Maybe someone can help me?

Using iMac 21.5 OS X El Capitan 10.11.3.

For more than a year I do (automatic) backups with Time Machine on an external drive. Works perfectly, the time that I needed.

I now wanted to look for an older email. Open the Machine from the time to Mail in my Inbox, but all the backups that I can scroll to have an empty Inbox...!

Only the last screen shows my present e-mails in the Inbox, but all other screens even since the last backup, see the empty Inbox.

Read on the internet that more people suffer from the same problem.

Someone has any idea how to solve this problem?

    Thank you!

    Eric

All mailboxes are empty in the snapshots, or just this one?

  • The merger with Time Machine backups

I fear I know the answer to that, but would like confirmation.

I am running Fusion 2.0.4 and have Mac OS 10.5.6.

As part of support to replace a faulty card from the airport on my MBP, Apple did a new install of the OS and erased my disk. When I started the laptop I told it to restore from a Time Machine backup. He restored all the files under the My Documents folder, except for my virtual machines. He has even restored a text file I had in the 'Virtual Machines' folder, but not the virtual machines themselves. Looking back through the external drive for Time Machine, I don't see the virtual machines to any previous backup.

I guess I'm watered at this point, although I'm hoping the actual VMs are located elsewhere, and under 'Virtual Machines' files are just links. Does anyone have an idea what I can try, or why the virtual machines are not saved?

    Thank you.

    Jeff

If your virtual machines were in the "Virtual Machines" folder, where they are. Although it is possible to create a configuration where this isn't quite the case (for example, the link hard to another directory or volume), the simplest and explanation of the default value is that your virtual machines were either not stored (in this case I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news) or in the first place never were in this folder (you can check your drive to backup files/folders - virtual machines tend to be big so should stand out).

As to why it is, Time Machine in the first versions of Leopard would cause a deadlock (and hang the Mac) in certain circumstances, one of them was a virtual machine. To work around this problem, Fusion told Time Machine to exclude virtual machines. Apple has fixed the bug of Time Machine and deleted merge the exclusion of Time Machine, but it is possible to get into situations where virtual machines are still excluded.

In general, we do not recommend the use of Time Machine to back up virtual machines - the short version is that it will go quickly through space and that it still does not produce a viable backup. Instead, we recommend that you back up files in the comments (or their mirror to the host and let Time Machine pick them up there), or manually back up virtual machines when they are not running.

  • How is upgrade from Standard to Enterprise Version - difficult to migrate vm to ESX server for Central storage for use with VMotion

    Hi all

We plan to upgrade our current system. We have 1 ESX Server with Standard operating system. Adding 2 more ESX Server with Enterprise edition and upgrading of our current business. We have about 15 VM on our current ESX Server. The migration process is difficult to move the virtual machines in storage Central for use with VMotion. I intend to take the ESX 3.5 Fast track class before you start the upgrade. I am trying to plan a project planned for the time to migrate these courses.

    Any guidance would be great.

    Robert

Here is a link to the plugin - http://sourceforge.net/projects/vip-svmotion/

The amount of time it will take to migrate the virtual machine online all depends on the size of the drive, the configuration of storage etc.
