Guidelines for best performance MS SQL server on EQL

Hello

Currently, I have a VM that the C: drive of the system as a disk VMDK on a LUN in a table of PS6100XV (24x600GB 15 k SAS drives).
This logic unit number is shared with other virtual machines.

The data and logs is on the D: drive which is a MS iSCSI initiator attached volume on the same table of PS6100XV.

I think to create two volumes on the Bay and move the data and logs to the respective volume. Will this increase performance or it won't make a difference because the table is a part of 24 disks with a pool. What about braces?

Can I create different pools and put the different volumes on these pools so volumes using different storage arrays which gives best performance? What is the optimal configuration of the eql to host SQL volumes?

Thank you

You certainly want to separate EQL volumes for logs and data.   It was a best practice for a long time, with or without virtualization.   The operating system has a queue of SCSI for both of these "readers" since there is in fact only a single drive.

If you have not already you must configure the EQL MPIO customer volumes and install HIT / ME software, available on the site Web of Equallogic.   That will optimize the I/O of these volumes.

If you do that a single physical Bay, you can have only one tank.  If you have two arrays of members, you may have one in swimming and one in the other.  There is no way to split a single physical table on more than a pool.

Kind regards

I am building a development machine that will run Win Server 2008 and MS SQL 2008. About 10 developers use it. functions of database pretty standard with each DB about 20 GB in size. I'm going to spec an E3-1230 and max the RAM to 32 GB but not sure that the best option for disk.

As this is a dev machine I don't need her to be elastic, no need to mirror, but I have speed and space for a budget.

I need at least 2 TB of space but the better and happy to put in 2 or even 4 discs, I understand chassis will have 4.

I'm not sure I know is if I should the modern fast SATA drives and connect 4 of them to the motherboard?

I was not able to discover what is the chipset of the motherboard and if it supports 3 Gbps or 6 GB/s speeds.

I know there is a map available H200 and would that be born if necessary, but I think that does support only 2 discs and not sure so if it will coexist with 2 connected directly to the motherboard. Also, I found in the past, these cards controller Dell add resilience but are sometimes older slower technology so may be slower than 6 GB/s, or even plugged directly 3gbps.

Our DBA SQL like as many spindles as possible, but which reduces flexibility and even if it was appropriate, when the disks were the bottleneck, I think they are faster now then perhaps it is useless if the controller/bus now is the bottleneck?

    Advice please it who's boss?

    Waterman,

The T110 II uses the latest Intel C202 chipset and supports the Xeon processor E3-1200 product family.  You can use the H200 or S300 controller for this server limitations to the S300 is that its Windows only.

The server can support 4 hard drives cabled them, either to the Council or to the controller. Onboard SATA ports are valued at 6 GB/s: http://www.intel.com/content/www/xa/en/chipsets/6-chipset-c200-chipset-datasheet.html page 200.  You won't win any show using a controller. Internal memory is limited to 12 TB.

Hope that answers your basic questions.

  • C: transfer disc 500 GB external drive and re - install XP for best performance...

Can I safely move my C: drive to my external 500 GB drive and re-install XP for best performance, and then replace the files & C: files transferred by car to ' puter?

N ° it will not work. Copy your data to the external hard drive, and then make your own install if that's what you want. But take a look at the "slow computer" information below first. Certainly you should backup your data to the external hard drive regularly even when.

    http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Backing_Up

    http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Reinstalling_Windows

Some reasons for the slow pace of the computer:

    1. computer has not been maintained - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Maintenance

    2. the computer is infected with the malware - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

    3. the disk is too full. Remove useless stuff, uninstall unused programs. Do not forget to save!
    http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Backing_Up

    4. flaky third party software. Toolbars and modules are particularly guilty in this area. Uninstall toolbars (Google, Yahoo, ISP brand, etc) and look at what modules are in use in your browser (s).

    5. computer has too many unnecessary programs/processes running in the background. Manage your Startup:

For XP - How to troubleshoot using the Msconfig in Windows XP utility - http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310560
The free Autoruns program is very useful for managing your Startup - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspx

For Vista/Windows7 - Start Orb > Search box > type: msconfig and when it appears in the results area above, right-click and choose 'run as administrator '. Autoruns is also very useful.

    6. the user runs an inflated/invasive such as Norton and McAfee antivirus program. Replace it with a better program. I recommend NOD32 (commercial) or Avast (free). Avira is also good, but the free version has an unpleasant reminder screen (Google for instructions on how to disable it). The user can also run several real-time antivirus/firewall/security programs.

    7. the user has installed new programs that are processor and/or memory-intensive (Photoshop, AutoCAD, Mathmatica or similar) and does not have the power of the equipment.

8 drive fails and is in PIO Mode. It's very much slow (like being in 1985). See Hans-Georg Michna here information - http://winhlp.com/?q=node/10

  • Change monitor VM CPU / MMU for best performance?

    People,

I'm about to deploy new features of Windows Server 2008 R2 (Remote Desktop Session Host / RDSH) virtual machines to support 50 + a simultaneous RDP access.

To control the virtual machine CPU / MMU may be a good idea to boost performance?

Here is the setting that I mention that I left by default, but don't know which option to click to enable console vSphere:

    MMU.JPG

do I need to restart the virtual machine to change the option greater than the background value or something else?

and also, it's the model of VMhost CPU type:

    CPU.JPG

any kind of comments would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

Assuming that AMD - V is enabled in the BIOS of your host, the automatic setting for Windows Server 2008 R2 on your CPU will be AMD - V with IVR.  In most cases, this will give you the best performance.  However, for young LBR is much more expensive with IVR with shadow paging.  If your workload is a TLB buster, you might want to switch to AMD - V with shadow paging.  On the other hand, the page table updates are much more expensive with pagination shadow with IVR.  Thus, even if your workload is a TLB buster, it might be better to use IVR if your workload also has a high frequency of updates of page table.

Binary translation is rarely a victory.  However, there are rare cases, such as the work of Windows XP 32-bit workloads that rub on the TPR, where the binary translation surpasses hardware-assisted virtualization.

The only way to be sure that you have selected the best mode is all benchmarks.

Yes, you don't have to restart the virtual machine to change the execution mode.

    I want to install Windows 7 / 8 with no problems (bad perf, etc.);

is it a good idea to update my RAM to a superior?

If it's good, what can recommend you?
If not, are there other solutions? or just buy a new one?

for now, I have less budget...
    pls help.

    Thank you

The better question is whether or not your computer accepts more than 2 GB of memory, and if so, what memory support or accept.  Once you have an answer to this question then you need determine if the additional memory will help.  Which would be determined by looking at the performance of the system in system monitoring tools and watching low available memory and/or high swap file usage.

  • For best performance, I use tweak 'DISABLE PAGING EXECUTIVE'?

Basically, everything has its own drive: os, final render, effects, media cache, previews, "scratch disks", etc.

    2 questions:

    (1) with 24 GB of ram can I still a pagefile?

(currently I have 1 hdd configuration in the SWAP file)

    (2) using the tweak "disable paging Executive" would help performance?

again, I have more confidence users adobe Googling for answers...

    Thank you

    1. Yes.  ALWAYS have a pagefile.  It may not be necessary a lot with 24 GB of RAM, but your system may crash hard without her, if it is never actually needed.

    2. I wouldn't worry on this subject.  With that much memory, you're not likely to see much difference.  And Win 7 64 manages memory did MUCH better than XP.  So better to let her do a job without being bothered by the user.

The link to the documentation provided is very old, for SQL Developer 1.5.x.  The problem is that the versions jtds - 1.2.x.jar are for use with applications that require older versions of Java to Java 7.  Developer SQL 4.0.x supports Java 7 and 8, while 4.1.x requires Java 8.  Please use jtds - 1.3.1.jar.
