Hardware Virtual Machine update problem

We have recently updated our vSphere infrastructure.  We have successfully upgraded tools from VMware and the hardware version 7 on all our servers, except one.  The vCenter server is physical, but the SQL Server server hosting the vCenter and databases update manager is a virtual machine.  I was able to update the SQL tools, but when I try to update the material it fails.

VCenter Shutsdown whenever SQL Server to update the material, it loses the connection to the database, which causes the upgrade of equipment to fail.

I guess that it is a fairly common problem, but I could not find a solution for this.  Anyone have any ideas?

Thank you

Can upgrade you the hardware on a virtual computer if you are connected directly to the ESX host?  (I checked, but he has not seen anywhere)

Yes, see my previous post.  The virtual machine must be turned off.  Then right click on it and "upgrade virtual hardware"

If I disable the SQL Server (that hosts the vCenter DB) so I can't connect to vCenter to tell the virtual machine to update its equipment.

You must stop your vCenter Server Service, and then turn off your VM SQL by connecting directly to the ESX host in which it is registered on.

  • Virtual Machine network problem

    Hi all

    I have a strange...

I have 8 ESX 3.0.2 hosts, they all work perfectly. The only problem I have is on 1 of the guests if I have a virtual machine on a vlan, the virtual machine cannot be contacted again the host can ping the gateway and other servers on this subnet?

I checked the configs of the host of 'bad' against all others and they are identical! My last resort will be to reboot the host, but do not see that as a solution here. Newspapers look nice and clean also.

Hope it makes sense because it's a strange...

On the pSwitch this VM is connected, that is the port configured EXACTLY like the rest (even vlan settings access and other things)?

  • A specific virtual machine performance problems

    Hi all

I was wondering if you could help me to check where is the performance of a particular VM bottle neck. I followed a few PDF guides and guide of yellow brick on esxtop thresholds and nothing seems to be in its place, with the exception of this metric named % LAT_C. What I've read, it's the amount of time it takes to wait because of the affirmation of the central processing unit.

Attached is a screenshot - the virtual machine is AU_ENG_BUILD - this is our server to build in Australia

If you have 12 logical processors.  and about 44 vCPUs on this host.  also remember that although VMware now has locking opportunisitc. That is, it will take only 2 logical cores if there is a cross-thread call.  I assume that you are using SQL and Exchange, etc., these are applications that support SMP that will lock multiple logical processors each cycle.

try to evacuate some of the SMP guest to another host and even on the charge and then rerun ESXtop.

  • Virtual machine monitor problems

    Hello

I just installed VM because we want to monitor and confiure our IDS using this.

I installed it the "Cisco Correct way" which puts the monitor on a server and the Consol of Managament IDS on the other.

I added manually in all sensors in the management console, but when I look at the monitor-> device status, all 76 sensors I've added it says its 'not connected '.

I used the option that the monitor must pick up the sensor post office protocols.

I can PIng the sensors, ssh o sensor, etc, etc, etc, but this 'thing' always shows that he is "not connected".

Where should I start to get out of trouble?

    Thanks a ton

    Mike

    Hi Mike,.

You got the right answer in your message. The sensors should be referred to the Security Monitor box and not the MC that the events are sent to the SecMon and the post office runs between the sensors and the SecMon.

Log on to the sensor as root and run sysconfig-sensor, option 6 and enter the details of SecMon for the part ID Manager of this config.

  • Problem with the mouse and the network after the upgrade VMware Tools and hardware to virtual machine

    Hello world...

I just upgrade my ESX 3.5 servers to vSphere 4.1. All this work is very well with the upgrade right now.

After that, I tried to mise a niveau of VMware Tools and hardware of VM for my virtual machine and the problems started.

I tried with two different VM (the two Windows 2003) and the problem appears for the two VM.

I don't want to test another VM of the different operating system now, I'm afraid to go too far with update of Pentecost the problem I have now.

I tried two VM to be sure that the problem is not only on a virtual machine.

    First of all, the mouse.

My mouse has jerky movement. The button works, but sometimes I have to click several times to select what I want.

I tried to uninstall the mouse in Device Manager and reinstall, but not really Pentecost improvement which (buttons works better, but... not so sure).

    Second problem.

After you restart the server after VMmware tools and hardware virtual machine, the network link not working anymore.

When I go to my network card configuration, IP settings are reset in DHCP mode.

If I go again all my IP settings, Windows says:

The IP address is hidden from the network and Dial-up connections

folder because it is not physically in the computer or is a riser

It does not work. If the same address is assigned to both adapters and

they become active, only one of them will use this address. This may result

in the incorrect system configuration. You want to enter a different IP address

address of this adapter in the list of IP addresses for this card in the list

Advanced IP address in the dialog box

If I answer Yes to this, I have to enter a new IP address, and of course, this is not what I want to do.

If I don't answer, the network working again.

I think it is a strange message but the work of the vSphere maybe network now.

Anyone have any idea why my work network and mouse as this upgrade after.

All other VM that is not upgraded so far works great.

    Thanks in advance...

    (1) make sure that your hardware acceleration is safe enough. I got the upgrade down my hardware acceleration several times already.

    (2) sounds like the new drivers for your NIC cards took over and VMware is basically a new card NETWORK for you. Follow these steps to disable it:

    (a) open a command prompt

    (b) type (without quotes): 'set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices = 1' and press ENTER.

    (c) type (without the quotes): "start devmgmt.msc"

  • problem with mcafee DLP Device control on virtual machines Windows XP

    Hallo,

We use view ESX 4.1 and 4.5.
I have the problem that we use DLP 9.1 with EPO 4.5 and have the problem that when we use DLP USB glue with series nummer they do not work through zeroclient on the virtual machine.

We've set the rules in the operative part of DLP controll that she is allowed to use usb sticks which are content encrypted and where the serial number is saved in the DLP.

It works fine on normal physical laptop but if I use the same USB on my zeroclient who got a machine virtual vmware as the stick got allways blocked.
I also tried to register before the stick no serialnumber and used the VID and PID, but also that have the same result as the stick has blocked.

If I disable all the rules of control of the aircraft as the stick got mapped from zeroclient to the virtual machine without problem.
Can help you to use or is there any practice well known for using control of the device with virtual machines?

I was also in touch with mcafee, but they want to say, this problem is related to vmware and I close go in contact with vmware.

    Best regards
    Heinze MS

    Hallo,

    so, we found the problem.

The reason why in the virtual machine, it has no SN the stick that we couldn't resolve, but we are in contact with the zeroclient of the teradici seller.

The reason why the instance id of the stick and PID or VID where does not have a problem in the permission set for the users who have applied the policy of the EPO.

DLP policy showed he applied rules and also the show later when you loggon, but he was right on the configuration screen that this rule are configuried when you use DLP political configuration of the importation of the EPO server it load the config which is really being used and so we saw that when we have configured the USB via the instance VID PID or device that was never written on the server EPO and never applied to the virtual machine :-)

best regards, perhaps it's useful for someone

  • Host CPU is not compatible with the requirements of the virtual machine in the level 0 CPUI register x 1 'ecx '.

I have a cluster of three ESX servers.  They are IBM 3650 and they are the exact same material bought at the same time.  They even the same exact versions of the firmware (bios, bmc, nic firmware, HBAs, raid, HDD firmware, rsa, etc.).  I started their reclassification of ESX 3.5u3 to ESX4 with all the latest patches.  Then I updated one moved some top vm and upgraded vmware tools and virtual materials without problem.  So, I went and upgraded the following ESX Server and has started moving the machines on that one and upgraded vmware tools and virtual hardware.  I tested the functionality of the ESX servers and they seem to work fine.  I vmotioned machine version 4 hardware virtual machine between the two developed level ESX host very well so I me with the upgrade process.  Then I had to vmotion, one of the virtual machines updated (version 7 of material) between the two ESX hosts newly improved and they won't vmotion.  It gives me the error CPU host is not compatible with the requirements of the judgment of the VM to CPUID level register 0 x 1 'ecx '.  The full error message is in the attachment.

Apparently, the virtual machine hardware upgrade exposed a few additional things virtual machine that prevents vmotion to work.  I don't know what and I'm quite surprised because these machines are identical identical hardware and firmware.

    All of the suggestions.

  • Convert ESX 3.5 in 4.1 virtual machines

    Hello

I want to migrate from ESX 3.5 to vSphere 4.1. I need to convert a virtual machine or can I just copy them?

    Sorry for my bad English.

ESXi 4.x supports hardware version 4 virtual machines in order to run virtual machines hosted on your system without modifications 3.5.  It's a good idea to update the VMware Tools after you migrate the virtual computer and if you want to take advantage of the functionality 4.1 you can update the hardware virtual machine (for version 7) once you have migrated the.  You can run machines virtual version 7 on ESX 3.5.

  • Add virtual machines to a data store while changing the name?

I am trying to create a virtual machine in standby (or more, I do not have a final number) in a second datacenter.  The goal is to have a copy of a group of virtual machines updated once a week as a relief.

I'll use our SAN replication to keep them up-to-date, so once a week, I stop all virtual machines in the data store, remove them from the inventory and remove the data store.  Then on the side of SAN, I'll create a new copy of the data store, then add this data store to vSphere.  We will do a few rounds of network to ensure we have not any change in the network that should be taken in the virtual machine.

The only changes to the virtual machine that needs to be done, are changing the vSwitch is logged in, that I understood, and to rename the virtual machine, either before being added, or when it is added.  Since it is a copy of a virtual machine running, I'm not able to add all virtual machines to the new data store.  I need either change the name of the virtual machine before being added, or when it is added.  All I have to do to change the name is add something like - backup at the end of the name of the virtual machine.

Is it reasonably simple way to do this?  It seems that he was promised that we could do that and now I need to find a way to make it work.

    Thank you

You can search the data for the VMX store you want to register a script like the one you'll find in VMX Raiders revisited.

To change the name of the virtual machine, you will need to replace the line that contains the New - VM cmdlet with something like this

    $newName = $VMXFile.DatastoreFullPath.split('/')[1].Split('.')[0]New-VM -VMFilePath $path -Name ($newName + "-backup") -VMHost $ESXHost -Location $VMFolder -RunAsync

  • Customization of a Windows virtual machine fails - Crush Down vSphere Client

    Hi guys,.

I met a very delicate problem.

I tried to customize the Windows VM I cloned from the model (win2008R2), and I simply run the workflow 'Customize vm' in vCO, I think all the settings I gave should be correct (I tried to manually customize the virtual machine by using these settings, and it worked) and there is also no "naming problem" since I followed the rules here : http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 2009315

But once the workflow is started, I saw "customization is underway" in vSphere client, a minute later, this watch:

    Capture.PNG

And then it is reconnected, as if nothing ever happened...

Anyone will throw some lights on it?

    Thank you very much

He proved it to be: it seems that I couldn't customize a vm cloned from a template directly.

I passed the entrance as a virtual machine, the problem disappeared.

Or there could be something wrong with the model gave me, but my solution is deployed this model first as a virtual machine and clone out that vm for customization later.

    Thank you

  • Help please... Replaced the hard drive of MBP, restored from TM, but the Windows XP virtual machine does not start

I replaced the 250 GB hard drive in my MacBook Pro early 2009 with a 500 GB drive, it the Mac OS extended (journaled) format and restored from my Time Machine backup.

Now when I try to start my Windows XP virtual machine (using Fusion 2.0.6... planning upgrade to 3.1.2 but wanted to validate all was well first), I get BSOD, even in safe mode.

I have my vm separately saved on a network drive data files based on things that I had read before, I do not think that TM backup of virtual machines. However, a friend with a similar setup with more knowledge I think because I could see my Windows XP vm VMWare listed under 'Documents' in Time Machine showing its full size, it has actually saved and there restore it. Apparently he has done this successfully before.

Should I have partitioned the hard drive? I don't think that my previous drive has been partitioned. Don't know what to do now.

    TIA!

    Katie

To be clear: you have restored VMs from the disk or network time Machine?  And if the network drive, what backup method you use?  (i.e.: have you just copied engine off the computer virtual package or not?)  Can you copy/restore the virtual machine to the network again drive?  What is a virtual machine that has the error, or other virtual machines have problems?

Time Machine backup correctly a virtual power off machine. But since Time Machine works automatically, you often will get not a consistent backup unless you do some tricks to make sure Time Machine backup only when you use a virtual machine.  (i.e.: turn on Time Machine only when you're done with the virtual machine.)  Thus, it is normally recommended to exclude the virtual machines from Time Machine and use another method to back up virtual machines.  Your friend is lucky or is only backup virtual machines powered off.

Should I have partitioned the hard drive? I don't think that my previous drive has been partitioned. Don't know what to do now.

The Mac player Paritioning is unnecessary unless you use Boot Camp or have required another for the partition.

No problem with taking of a snapshot-

After you open a call to HP, they said that we must upgrade to the latest version of the firmware, 2.80a4, available since 14 AUGUST 09 (!) - and no reported similar problem...

Now, I'm trying to upgrade my firmware on all ESX servers in all speakers...

I'm looking for just the best way to do it, because it seems that it is no longer possible to do with lputil.

HBanyware seems to be the best solution, in fact, I'm working on it with our team of SAN...

I would be interested in some good links and of course if someone had the same kind of problems?

    Best regards

    Patrick

    Hiya,

There is a new version of the software downloadable hbanyware from the emulex website that works more precisely with esx3.5 u4.

(lputil is no longer supported with esx 3.5 u4)

It's a bit of pain to use compared to lputil, you must specify the name WWN in most the hbanyware orders well.

I found it easier to allow remote through the ESX hbanyware Firewall (see readme with hbanyware for syntax) then administer them all the hbanyware running my Windows VCB server remotely.
