Help remove (ReadyBoost) USB drive write protection

A customer used ReadyBoost, a couple of days on his USB drive, but never turned off when he did. The player is now known as write-protected, and I am unable to disable ReadyBoost on his computer, or any other.

I also tried to format, diskpart and some linux partitioning tools.

The drive has a single file named Readyboost.sfcache on it.

I'm not ready to tell the customer that he can thow away its 4 GB USB drive, so what I could do?

I know, it seems obvious, but just wanted to check. I'm guessing that you have already tried to remove the cache file as well?

ReadyBoost is now included in the SuperFetch (SysMain) service, rather than having one of it's own. SuperFetch is usually disabled by default on computers with hard drives SSD. You can check this, or toggle control you want ReadyBoost to other flash drives.
Some readers also have cursor over them and write protect the disk. Another obvious, but just in case.

Open the file in Windows Explorer and select the drive letter of your external hard dirve (eg. h:\).

Right-click on it to display the context menu, and then select Properties

Then, from the Properties dialog box, select the Security tab and give you read permissions / writing.

    or

Start > computer, right-click and select Manage (you will need the administrator privelleges)... then disk management... With administrator privelleges your should be able to format the drive in the My Computer Management console.

    Kind regards.
