HELP - SAN choice: EqualLogic vs EMC vs. NetApp

We are a small shop with storage needs!  We head to virtualize 40 servers using Vsphere and must choose the storage room.  We have reduced up to three models and final score:

1 NetApp - FAS2050

2 EMC - CX4-120 Clarrion

3 EqualLogic - PS5000

The price is similar 3 w / all sellers and not a cause for concern.  However, the capabilities of ease of use and DR\replication are our main concern.  All advice\suggestions\experiences good and bad (especially from anyone running one of these models) are welcome to help us to make our final decision.

-appreciated... bj

In the same vein that do not leave the CF guys swing you, don't let the seller "How it is easy to configure Look" you swing. At the end of the day, you should not use the management interface of all that often. I'd rather spend 2 hours to set up a solid rock for 30 minutes and having to use the al of the time management interface.

  • Migrrating a physical RDM to EMC for NetApp.

I'm at the stage of planning for a replacement of SAN.  I need to find a painless and easy to migrate an RDM EMC for NetApp RDM.  He must remain in physical mode as it was created for a MS cluster in two boxes of ESXi.  The research I've read said that you must use tools such as the SAN, but when you have two WHO do not play nice with them what your options are?

Although it would be possible to migrate the RDM using vmkfstools, I think that you will have less downtime with help e.g. robocopy. With robocopy, you can make a copy of the original, while the old ONE is still active and perform a final synchronization of data just before moving to the new LUN.

Storage - EMC or NetApp training? -What is the opinion which continue to increase identification of Collect information?

I get a lot of job opportunities for VCPs with storage capacities. I work with the directors of storage on all commitments but don't go or experience. Both are huge players in the world of virtualization and thus increase your VCP - I would lean more towards the EMC cert just because of the VCE (VMware, CIsco and EMC) company

  • Help with choice of mezzanine card

I'm having a hard time trying to understand what mezzanine card to use our servers to Blade (half the size).  We currently organize vSphere 4 on servers in a rack with 3 four port NICs installed for a total of 12 interfaces available for ESX.  We do this for redundancy and increased bandwidth.  If I use the mezzanine 10G card looks like it has only 2 10 NICs on the ESX Server.  Even if the bandwidth is large, it is far 12 env, we have for redundancy.  The virtual NETWORK card looks good because he can feature up to 128 'physical' on the ESX Server interfaces.  I need interfaces for my LAN, my traffic from iSCSI SAN traffic and my ports console.  Who would be my best option?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Ken

    Ken,

With the solution of 10 GB, you assign two 10 GB NIC to a unique vSwitch.  You can then use port groups / VLAN is to separate your iSCSI traffic to VLAN isolated it is.  Before the 10 GB solution best practice was to isolate the iSCSI traffic on its own physical network for all the bandwidth.  With 10 GB iSCSI can exist on the same physical map as your production traffic, but allows to isolate the traffic of the port groups / VLAN.  I use iSCSI storage in this configuration and I had no problem with iSCSI traffic.  With SBS I actually get much better iSCSI performance.

  • EMC and netapp iometer

I ran a few tests iometer on netapp vmdk and a cx380 vmdk and the netapp outperforms the vmdk cx380 by far. I don't know why that is.

I do not use powerpath on esxi servers so that there are 4 Active paths, only shows that IO active.

the netapp set to round robin and the two paths have active IO.

But why the netapp surpass the emc by so much?

the netapp is a 3210 on an aggregate with 14 disks dp.

the cx380 has 2 LUNS on 2 rgs

    1 is a sata R5, 7 discs

    2 is a CF R5 5 discs

    both are using FCP

The number of the IOPS / s, you can do is directly proportional to the number of zones you throw.  The NetApp should bury the CX380 simply because the CX380 isn't enough time zones.  This is doubly true if the NetApp aggregate is the use of SAS drives.

    Suppose that a disk SATA 7.2 K is capable of 100 IOPS / s and a SAS 15 K drive is capable of 180 IOPS / s.

    If your 3210 has a aggregate of SATA drives, it's going up on 12 * 100 and 1,200 IOPS / s.  If they are SAS, the high-end is 2 160 IOPS / s.

    Your RG1 CX380 will reach 600 and RG2 will reach 720.

It is not a fair controllers fight, since the controllers are much more capable IO, but you have forced the test by the number of batteries available.

Thanks in advance for your help.

How do check you if these components have been checked or ticked. in fact, I probably don't want to know that.

you really recommended to use a listener to detect when your components have changed and then you can use the modified method to define your variables and update your sharedobject.

  • Help with choice of printer

I want to buy a Dell printer, would like an HP printer... one that works with Vista... I print a lot of family photos and I want the best out there, regardless of the cost... I would very much help to someone who could advise me on this... and I wish I had some good software with the printer so I could change or better my photos... Thanks to all those who have the time.

    topkatnc,

If you print a lot of documents, so I suggest to get a laser printer. If this is used for a lot of printing, then an inkjet priter would work.

Try going to Dell printer Learning Center and it can help you decide.

Regarding the photo editing software, some people have used Adobe Photoshop for photos. Don't know what other photo editing software is available. You can do a little research on that. I'm sure that Kodak and other companies have some type of software to do this.

    Morning of VMware gurus!

I'm trying to put together a quote for a vmware system go into a live data center but I'm unable to work if I need vCentre Heartbeat to enable VMware HA?

Is the package only I need: VMware vSphere Enterprise Edition?

I think currently putting in place the Setup is 2 guests each 24 GB of RAM and 1 or 2 cpu (according to the imposed limits only have one processor and the cost of a permit) each CU would have 4 cores.

The cpu I was recommended by dell is: "processor Intel Xeon E5520 (2.26 GHz, 8 M Cache, 5.86 GT/s QPI, Turbo, HT).

Thanks in advance for all Foundation! I apprechiate my questions are probably quite basic and tedious to respond.

I call the VMware Support for free on licensing issues and confirm if vSphere 4.0 Enterprise edition is available as I have heard they will stop this edition but call to double check.  If so, then the only option is Enterprise Plus which includes everything you need.  Unfortunately, the pre-editing does not give you Storage VMotion, but I was wondering if Andrew Kutz has separated for vSphere or its active VMware share now plugin!  How many virtual machines you try to virtualize and are there critics enough spent a lot on the VMware license, otherwise I would use the Advance or Standard version to save money!

What types of iSCSI storage use you and you look to Dell Equallogic, FalconStor, EMC, IBM, NetApp, or virtual Network Lefthand, Datacore SANMelody solution!  Almost all of these suppliers has created best practices guide how to implement iSCSI with VMware, nice and easy for you to read so just the connection to their site for best practices guide otherwise post here if you have any questions of storage.

    Thanks - Tom Miller

Hi Tom, looks like that give it refuses your connection request.  Maybe a few things:

You do not have the options httpd.admin.access or httpd.admin.enable the value is.  These can prevent access api http Basic.

If you try to make the https connection, you may have set the SRA use SSL (in ontap_config.txt on the srm server) but you don't have ssl turned on the netapp and have not followed the instructions to https://kb.netapp.com/support/index?page=content&id=1012531 , I doubt that is your problem, since you mention any you want ssl.

This problem might come after you go beyond the above, based on the errors you got you connect not even on the go.  With ontap 8.0.x you MUST give an address addresses IP of NFS field when you configure the SRA if you use NAS storage.  The IP addresses you put that there should be the addresses you want the ESX hosts to connect to on table when they do NFS to go up, could this be private IP addresses that are different from the IP address of the administration.  If you don't have a single IP (common when you play with SIM cards) and then with ontap 8.0.x you must put the admin IP in IP of NFS field addresses too.  In ontap 8.0.x you must use the field addresses IP NFS, even if your file server has one IP address, because it forces the SRA to ignore the other treats local loopback that exist in ontap 8, which does not exist in previous versions.

You must download and use the adapter version NetApp 1.4.3P1, you can get it on the site now by scrolling through the end of the list of software downloads and select the DRA and then typing in the 1.4.3P1 version.  None of the issues described above have been fixed for the release of P1, but it might help you to miss other problems once you are connected correctly.

  • Problem of SAN disk sharing

I am trying to share a SAN between ESX 4.0 and a 2008 physical disk server.  The windows Server 2008 has onit netbackup and netbackup must be able to see the same LUNS as the vmware esx so it can back up data through the fiber.  When we present a lun on the esx server and create a data store, then I try to bring back the same LUNS online on the windows 2008 server it will not go online it says device is not ready.  We did a test and present another windows 2008 server, and ESX server logical unit number and I brought the LUN online on the windows 2008 server but then I couldn't do a data store on the ESX Server.  What we lack to be abel to have two servers share the disks?

Please let meknow if anyone encountered this problem and the fix possible.

    Thank you for your help

The snapshot for EMC San feature is an additional feature, so that you will have to pay.  You will need to speak with that whether you bought your San to to see if you can get this functionality or if you already have this feature.

  • Dell Equallogic PS5000X NIC reference

    Hello

does anyone have experience of SAN Dell Equallogic PS5000X?  I'll put in place at the moment and it seems there are 2 controllers for all of the 3 NIC (6 in total).  I find I cannot use 3 cards and 1 controller in Active mode and can not find a way to get the two controllers to work in unison and the two assets.

I wanted to use 4 network cards for iSCSI traffic on a VLAN giving a rate 4 GB of storage but you can use 2 network cards, giving a throughput of 2 GB and 1 for management.

Is this the only method available for this type of SAN?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Andy

    Hey,.

The PS is an active / standby. A controller is active. The other will be the shot if the first of all a problem. You have only a configuration to do.

You configure 3 interfaces in the GUI. eth0, 1, 2.

The second controller will use this interface when you need.

You can dedicate a management port, but Dell recommends that you connect all of your ports to the ISCSI network.

    Hope this helps

  • ESX brings more free space than does SAN

I have a student who has an ISCSI SAN Dell EqualLogic PS400E and ESX 3.5i servers using VMware software initiator. They observed that formatted with the VMFS LUNS show different amounts of free space if you view ESX or SAN. The SAN of reports more LUNS are low on space but ESX reports that there is a good bit of free space on the data store. The variation of the reports may be as much as 50 GB.

Anyone got any ideas on why this can happen and that they should look to reconcile the differences?

You can find an old thread on this argument.

It's true: Equallogic indicate less space than ESX, but the reason is simple...

EqualLogic can't VMFS and how it works.

Know only the block marked as used (which may be free or unused in VMFS).

  • Small Business Solutions

I'm looking for help. I realize that there are a lot of discussions on the forum there, but most are fragmented and old. I have to restore all the "solutions" and also trying to find the equivalent technology to a 2006 SAN or backup solution.

This is my story. I work for a small bank in Leavenworth Kansas. We currently use the single application, methodology of a single server. We have 3 locations. The direction of the House has 8 servers (2 currently virtualized with ESXi 3.5 u4 on DAS) the other two branches each have a single server. I think I came to the conclusion that I get vSphere 4 essentials more. From my understanding that gives me 3 Server licenses. I have two servers, the Home Office and the other at a branch of DR. My budget of course as a small business isn't huge and therefore have only two is almost out of the question. I don't even know if a San is the way to go, but for a growth perspective, I do not see how to do it otherwise. I also need a good backup solution for MS SQL and Exchange. and then replicating if replication seems to be an easy choice depending on whether or not I get WITHOUT two or I get a SAN and NAS for the branch.

Anyway, my question is how other small businesses have done this? What solutions are just like you and you are happy with them? These a lot more with the method of implementation. I tell myself that its really not a HUGE difference whether or not I'm going to IBM, hitachi, equallogic/dell, emc, netapp, etc.. It will be a great help for me to understand how things work and how they are implemented in real life scenarios. Thank you for any information provided in your existing facilities.

    Mark Breaux

Edit: 8 servers are all windows 2003 but the upgrade during this process for 2008. They include software of the Exchange/sql/dc/antivirus/websense/loan processing. Thank you!

Yes, I was making reference to the branch, it will take work to determine if your primary storage will be able to replicate to a genaric ISCSI target. Owner use technoligies SAN replication technology won't work not among other material, but some have featureset and you may be.

For backup, you have several options for a replacement for backup exec in long-term storage

    (1) data Protection manager of Vmware, the new version has some nice features which include backups incremental deduplication, it may be sufficient for your needs of data protection to the size that you are

    (2) use a backup to disk (for example asigra and robobak) product, they allow a more comprehensive backup of drive technology that will make incremental forever and deduplication, here are ment for disk storage in the long term and have features such as autonomous recovery and archiving and replication of data sets. They can be used for your data in and out of ESX... it can also be combined with number 1 (for example, the imaging server and use these products to permanently store images)

    (3) continue to use backup exec with capable storage it should preform well in a virtual envyronment

We did 3 years number now, we move away from a combination of numbers 1 and 2 for the retention of data long-term (for us data retention is 7 years)

Hope that answers some of your questions

In regards to your DAS, which is the number of disks? Number of virtual methods?

The reason why I ask, is that if the PIN number is down and, with her in RAID5 instead of some of the best (like 50 and 10) RAID configurations it COULD just be that he didn't have the pure nessisary IOPS / s for the task.

  • ID of the LUN duplicate when you use several bays

I'll put up a new battery of VMware in a large company, where EMC and Netapp without are used.

I asked a storage engineer to present a RDM on the Netapp SAN LUN. They have gave it a LUN ID 0. Unfortunately, my boot LUN on the EMC also has a LUN ID 0. This resulted in two LUNS tables separated with the ID 0. The targets are different and the paths are all.

I've never had duplicate LUN like this before and I was wondering if there is a problem, and if it is commonly encountered in many situations of table. Maybe I need to be more specific with SAN engineers whose LUN ID they present at the same time, is this something the SAN engineer chooses their console?

Do I need to worry about this at all? I screen dumped two LUNs.

I can tell you that we have duplicated LUN that come from different tables in our environment as well (that I inherited from the previous engineer).  From what I remember the pain only treats that LUN comes easily what follow up dashboard, we have no technical/performance problem that arises from this.

I make it a point to cut LUN with different identifiers now simply for ease of tracking.

Hope that helps a little, and someone another chimes in!

  • Migration from 5.0 to 5.5

    Hi all

I have what is probably a very stupid question, but I don't have much experience with VMware so please excuse me...  I recently inherited a succession of vSphere 5.0 which consists of two R710s Dell connected to a SAN Dell EqualLogic network via iSCSI.  Asked me to replace the R710 they are old and need to be replaced.  What I would do, is to buy a few new servers R720 from Dell to replace them, while at the same time upgrade the environment to the latest version (5.5), but I'm not sure of the best upgrade path to take or how can I migrate the virtual machines through the new 5.5 servers?  So ultimately, I want the old R710 / 5.0 servers with a new series of R720 / 5.5 servers that still use the same EqualLogic storage.  Any help or someone can give me any advice would be greatly appreciated .

With licenses and SAN storage (shared), that you have, the migration should not require much downtime. After the upgrade of the storage system, you can upgrade the vCenter server or installing a new one, depending on your environment (for example version supported SQL, vSphere features such as vDS, permissions, etc.). Once the new vCenter Server in place you can then install new ESXi hosts and add them to vCenter (in trial mode, because processor licenses are always related to the former hosts). Depending on whether the new hosts can be added to the same cluster (VCA compatible mode), you can even vMotion the VMs for new guests without interruption of service, otherwise you will have to create a new cluster for new hosts and migrate virtual machines while turned off. Once the 'old' hosts are empty, remove them from vCenter - who will be CPU - free licenses and assign the licenses to the new hosts. As a last step, you can consider to upgrade VMware Tools and HW (virtual compatibility mode) version on the virtual machines, which will probably require a reset.

ATTENTION: Do not improve the virtual version HW (virtual compatibility mode) for vCenter Server at HW version 10 (5.5 compatibility). If you do this, you will not be able to manage vCenter Server using vSphere Client Windows-based more!
