How backup complete photos and catalog on external hard drive?

I want to backup my entire LR library on an external drive for security. I want the backup to include photos as well as all the metadata of. I can't do it, and I can't find a similar question and answer on the forum. I am able to 'Export' pictures on my external hard drive, but the metadata file that gets exported is unreadable.

Please advise me how to do this simple and necessary procedure. Thanks in advance.

Two steps to be completed-

1. When you close the Lightroom program you should let make a backup of the CATALOG . OFTEN!

This is defined in the catalog preferences [Ctrl + Alt +] [Ctrl/Cmd + Alt + comma]

The catalog stores everything you do in the Lightroom program! including metadata.

AND save backups of the catalog to another physical disk (NOT in the same folder as the Lightroom program!)

2. your original images must be 'Backed-up' or copied to a second location on a different physical drive your chosen method (and not by Lightroom)

Mac users can use {Time Machine}, PC users can use {SyncBack, Free File Sync, etc.)

* It is usually not necessary to 'Export' all images unless you have a specific purpose - for example to post on Facebook, Pinterest, web page, printer, etc..

There is no object in the export of images from archive on your computer, if Lightroom has a catalogue of work!

Once we have received the new system, I tried to add the hard drive off the E521 it temporarily just to drag and drop some files on the new computer. The problem is that the new computer was a RAID configuration and somehow he tried to add the third disc in the table and in the process of wiping the boot sector of the disk and partitions are today all messed up. I then reinstalled the drive in the E521 and I wanted to just wipe and re-install windows on it and configure for children (forget the files). • Use LR5. Because of volume and the size of the photos, I use an external hard drive. When opening LR5 it references only the local hard disk. How can I change the refernce to read the external drive. Thank you

Use LR5, due to volume and the size of the photos, I use an external hard drive. LR refers only the Local Drive C not outside. Where do I change this by LR read the external drive. Grateful for the help.

    Thank you

LR is not a file Explorer. He knows only the disks that you imported photos of.

If you have previously imported these photos, then later moved into the external hard drive, go to the library files and "update location" Panel on the files that you moved.

If you have never imported these images on the external hard drive, perform an import by using the option 'Add' (not ' copy') to keep the images on the external hard drive during import.

  • How to copy a catalog of external hard drive to the hard drive of the computer to use smart insights not connected to the external hard drive?

I am very new to LR5. I put LR5 in place so that my catalog and photos are on an external hard drive. I discovered that when not connected to the hard drive, LR5 can't find my catalog, therefore, I can't do any editing in intelligent insights, unless it is connected to an external hard drive. How can I fix this so that I can edit photos without being connected to an external hard drive. Is it possible to copy the catalog out of the hard disk on the computer's hard drive or I have to re-establish a new catalog using LR5? Must the catalog always be loaded onto the hard drive? Thank you in advance.

Yes that's correct. The LR catalog must be on the computer's internal drive. Then when you have smart previews activated you can change the image without going through the reader that they are connected. When you connect this drive images will be updated.

Simply COPY these 4 folders on your internal drive in a folder called Lightroom catalog that you create. Then open LR and go on the file menu point and select open catalog. Navigate to the folder you created called catalog in Lightroom and select the Lightroom Catalog.lrcat 5 file and click Open. Once restart Lightroom open change preferences, > preferences, and under the general tab, in the catalog default section make sure that "when starting to use this catalogue:" listings in the area where you copied the files. Something like Macintosh HD/Wherever, have created it this folder/that folder name/Lightroom catalog.lrcat 5.

    Hello ShamedMonkey,

Thank you for your message.  The problem you are having is because of differences in formatting between PC and Mac.  You can, however, transfer your files between the two.  I will set out what must be done under and limitations of each.
First, you will need to format the drive on your PC.  When you format the PC, you can format it in FAT32 or NTFS.
(You mentioned that you do not see the drive in the computer) To format drive:
Click 'Start' > right click on 'Computer' > select 'manage '.
    Click on "disk management".
In the right pane, you should see your drive > you can then do a right click and 'format '.
    FAT32:
This format will allow you to easily transfer files between the two.  This format becomes problematic when you transfer files more than 4 G.  There is a limit of 4 GB in FAT32, etc. of many movies are bigger than that and cannot be transferred using this format.
    NTFS
This format has no size limitation, however, in its normal state it will be 'Read only' on Mac.  If you will not be able to transfer all the data itself.  While doing some research on the web, it seems that you can use a program called MacFuse on your Mac to change to NTFS files.  I have not confirmed this, but you can give it a try.  If this program works as planned, it would be the way to go.
Please let us know if it did or did not solve your problem.

Recovery of DNG issue: I have photos stored on an external hard drive which have previously been imported into Lightroom and converted to DNG.  The laptop on which I was running Lightroom died and I had to replace the hard drive and rebuild the computer.  In the process of my Lightroom program and catalog related to these images have been lost.  When I re-associate these photos with my new installation of Lightroom and a new catalogue is there a way to retrieve the keywords or other changes or metadata catalogue Mountaga?  Is any of this information embedded with the imge DNG file or was it only in the cataloght lost on my failing hard drive? I re-import just as if it were new images with no prior treatment of Lightroom?

By default, LR saves all changes in the catalog, and that applies to any type of file.

Optionally, you can save changes to the file as well, for raw files owners, this will create a xmp file - for DNG that changes are going to be cooked in the file, without additional xmp file.

But it does not default. Go to the catalog and parameters under the control of metadata automatically save changes to XMP.

Unless you do this, the changes are saved only in the catalog.

    Hope this makes things clearer.

I use a PC and I used LR3. I'm a newcomer to LR, so patient with me! My problem is related to the import function.

I have a photo library on an external hard drive. I've slowly been import previews of the photos selected from the library in my catalog, adding them during the import process - well. But now, I hit a problem. Another folder in my library contains several subfolders, each containing a number of photos (a mixture of RAW steals (naves) and jpg). I was importing found in my catalog each Subfile in turn, using the Add function, usually of the jpgs only from each Subfile. It works fine, until I reached a particular Subfile. For some reason when I try to import from it and select the secondary file as a Source, only the RAW (NEF) images appear in the preview pane (sorry, forgot the correct term for it!). I know that jpg files are in this auxiliary file on the external hard drive, because when I view its content in Windows, they are all there. But try as I can (choose the file under source, select the folder parent as a source, try to copy or move them, instead of adding them), nothing seems to work. Since they do not appear in the preview pane, I can't import them. It does appear that this a Subfile where the problem exists, but I don't see anything that is different from the others (names of files under all use the same structure - yyyy-mm-dd_custom name, and pictures in all subfolders are adopting the same denomination structure too - yyyy-mm-dd_sequential number_custom name.) NAVE/JPG. So what I am doing wrong? Any ideas please.

It is possible that the images in this particular subfolder were taken in your camera in RAW + JPEG.  If so, you will need to go to preferences under the general tab and make sure the box "processing JPEG files files next to raw as separate photos" is checked.

However, assuming that this is the case, there is really no reason to import the JPEG file if you already have the RAW file.

  • Creating catalog on external hard drive

    Hello.

I just bought LR5 & amp; want to use the library etc. on an external HD

Could someone give some advice on how to implement. I found the default location on my MacBook Pro HD and the folder contains excerpts from catalog & amp; the catalogue but I'm not sure if I copy / paste it into a folder on my external or I I let them.

    Any advice will be welcome

    Adrian

I recommend you leave the catalog in the default location. It will work more efficiently and is relatively small in size compared to your image files. Just place all your photos in folders on external hard drive, then use Import > Add to align on Lightroom.

  • In iMovie 9.0.4 How can I move events to an external hard drive?

Note: I am writing this issue on behalf of my daughter, who is an old iMac running 10.6.8.   His version of iMovie is 9.0.4.

She has about 50 GB, events which occupies about one-third of its HD.  There is an external hard drive with lots of available storage.

How to pass these events to the external hard drive?

    Thank you

    Owen

For a long time I used iMovie 9 but this link to the help info gives instructions: http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3ac6d42c

Its probably safer to copy rather than move events (unless you already have a backup) just in case something goes wrong.

  • How to transfer data from laptop to external hard drive?

How to transfer data from laptop to external hard drive?

    my model is vgn-cr323.

    Thanks in advance

Let me provide you with General information on how you can transfer data from your computer to an external drive.

To transfer the data, plug the USB cable into the correct port. Usually, your computer will know that he has a new disc attached and a pop box up will warn you. It will scan to determine what to do with the new connection and your computer will assign a drive letter (for example, drive G: and so on.) This will allow you to transfer data to the external hard drive just like you would move files on your internal hard drive.

Once you have the USB cable plugged into your computers port (and the other end plugs into the external drive) you can now start to save files you want on the external hard drive.

Open the item (s) or folder (s) you want to transfer or save on your external hard drive. There are two ways to save external hard disk 1). If you have only one or two things to save, you can open each item, click on file / record under... and choose the letter/drive (for example, drive G corresponding to that of your external hard drive, click Save.) This he recorded on the external hard drive.

    Hello to everyone.

I would lik to see whether there is a possibility to manage the same catalog on two different workstations. For example, I make a few adjustments in the morning on my pc 1 ad, and then later I close the office but I need to continue to work on the same files on pc 2 without starting all over. Then I make other adjustments to other files that I end the next day on 1 pc.

    Hi Anna,.

You can store the catalog Lightroom and original images on an external hard drive, and connect the player to the computer on which you want to change.

Refer to this tutorial to find out how to transfer your catalog on disk: Lightroom training: How do I move Photos or a catalogue on an external drive - YouTube
