How can I segment my network?

We currently have a business background prior in a rented office in the city, but for economic reasons, we want to move our Home Office.  But security and legal restrictions, to be able to segment our network so that the computer of the company is on a separate network, therefore inaccessible by other computers on the LAN.

Our headquarters internet flow via a network of optical fiber of our co-op electric, rather than DSL by the company phone, so we have no modem at home.  Instead, the FIOS feeds directly into a router (Linksys WRT54G), via a cable of Cat53 and a connector RJ-46.  For other ports, router, in turn, feeds a switch gigabit (D-Link DGs22065).

My question is, how can I segment the local network so that the computer of the company is on a separate?  Is there some kind of separator of LAN, switch or other device should be used?

BTW, I forgot to mention above that this w LAN / / be CABLE ONLY; i.e. the router's wireless capability is turned off.  All computers are wired.

Hi Robert,

The question you posted would be better suited in the TechNet Forums. I suggest you check out the link.

I still see a lot of WLANs one my mac searches for a long time until it detects my network. How can I ignore the other visible networks?

Where do you see them? When you click the icon on the taskbar menus or in Network preferences? If the first, they are simply being picked up by your choose wireless networks. They disappear once you have chosen your network. If the latter then open network preferences and click on the Advanced button. You should see all these networks in the list box. Select the ones you don't want and click on the delete button [---] to delete. This should prevent the computer tries to select one network other than your own. Click on the OK button, and then click the apply button.

  • A neighbor's wireless network is more powerful than mine, so my MacBookPro selects every time.  How can I eliminate the network of neighbour from the airport to the research?

Wireless network from a neighbor is always "found" by my Airport first, then my MacBook links to it.  But I want to find my own network, of course.  Question: How can I remove this neighbor of the network function research network?  Is it still possible?  In other words, I want my laptop to ignore this network around when I wake up from my laptop.

Open the preferences system (gear on the dock icon)

  • How can I find my "network security key?

    Hello world...

I am a netbook which is preloaded with windows 7 starter. My PC is 64-bit windows vista ultimate. I have an ADSL router that is connected to the computer with a network cable (yellow) - internet works fine.

I'm trying to connect my netbook to the wireless router, and the netbook from asking a "network security key.

Where exactly can I find it? I can't find that whatever this is named network security key to my router settings...

    Thank you very much!!

The wireless security key is in the settings of your router. See below for how to configure a wireless network in complete safety. It will also cover where you will find these settings.

Have a computer connected to the router with an ethernet cable. Examples given are for a Linksys router. See the manual of your router or the router mftr's Web site. for the parameters by default if you don't have a Linksys. Open a browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox and in the address bar type:

http://192.168.1.1 [Enter] (it is default IP address of the router, which varies from router to router then check your manual)

This will bring you to the login screen of the router. The default username is blank and the Linksys default password is "admin" without the quotes. Enter this information. You are now in the configuration of the router utility. Your configuration utility may be slightly different from mine. The first thing to do is to change the default password because * all * known default passwords for different routers.

Click the Administration link at the top of the page. Enter your new password. MAKE A NOTE SOMEWHERE THAT YOU WILL NOT LOSE. Re-enter the password to confirm it, and then click Save settings at the bottom of the page. The router will reboot and show you the box of connection again. Do not fill in the user name and put it in your new password to enter the configuration utility.

Now, click on the link wireless at the top of the page. Change the network name (SSID) wireless by default to something, you'll recognize. I suggest that my clients not use their surname as the SSID. For example, you might want to name your network wireless network "CastleAnthrax" or similar. ;-)

Click on save settings and when you get the prompt that your changes were successful, click the wireless security link which is just beside the Basic Wireless Settings link (where you changed your SSID). Most computers purchased during the last 4 years have the wireless hardware that will support WPA2-Personal (also known as WPA2-PSK). This is the desired encryption level. If your wireless hardware is older, use WPA. Don't use WEP, because who is easily broken within minutes. So go ahead and set the Security Mode WPA2-Personal. Do this and enter a password. For example, you could use the password ' here be dragons, beware you scurvy dogs! The password is what you enter on all computers that are allowed to connect to the wireless network. MAKE A NOTE SOMEWHERE THAT YOU WILL NOT LOSE.

At this point, your router is set up and if the computer that you use to configure the router will normally connect wireless, disconnect the ethernet cable and wireless of the computer should see your new network. Enter the password that you have created (exactly as you wrote it with all capital letters and punctuation) to join the network and start surfing.

Ok. You will need to ensure that the ip addresses you assign to your virtual machines are in the same subnet that the adapter created by the installation of vmware. Once you get the fixed basic network installation, you can treat these virtual machines like any machine in your data center. Forget the vm console and access it exactly as you would for any remote server - putty for the Linux and Windows Remote Desktop to the Windows machine.

To a prompt on the host computer, post this:

    c:> ipconfig -all

You will get feedback on multiple net cards, of which two are identified as with vmware - vmNet1 and vmNet8. Note the IP addresses of the two. We'll need later.
You'll also need to know how you have configured the network cards on your virtual machine - NAT, bridged, hostonly?

Note that these issues are out of scope for this forum. I don't mind helping, but I don't have an installation of vmware for details of the reference.

I don't know, how to set up the ip address and the necessary information for the windows database.

Configuration of an IP address is purely a matter of admin OS and out of range for this database forum.
