  What are the options for testing performance on ESX hosts?  Are there models of good OVF or vApps for ESX hosts test to determine their ability to stress?  For example, you want to determine how many virtual machines can run safely on a physical machine - is there an OVF template that will peg the CPU, memory usage usage and access hard drive at startup that you run a bunch of one host and one model OVF who will report on the usage statistics?

  Are there other (free) ways to stress tests of your physical servers?

• Exhausted ESX host memory

  Hi guys

  I have a few 3.5u4 ESX, basically it's a Desktop Virtualization infrastructure.

  ESX hosts 32 GB of RAM

  They are now around 250 VMs on host virtual machines 40-45.

  Lately, all ESX hosts trigger alerts to RED, VMs are set at 2 GB (which I think is too much for simple office applications).

  Apart from checking if all have tools Vmare, btw how to get the latest vmware tools for virtual machines on esx 3.5?

  What else should I check on the VMS and to know why they are exhausting memory to host ESX (more than 90% of use)?

  At the first glance, I must say that you yourself have built a time bomb.  It will explode at some point.

  The problem is, as you seem to indicate, that you have massivley on subscribed your memory.   More than 2:1.  Office workloads are difficult to anticipate.  Giving them a lot more overhead is just asking them to use it.   I know there are probably people who never use more than 250 MB of memory.  However, today it is not difficult to chew a lot more.   I know that my office, I am granted more than an "advanced user", it runs generally in the range of 1.5 to 2GB.   It is not really a way to control this in part to limit the available memory by VM or implementation of resource pools to manage.

  With regard to your specific questions.   How do you determine the versions of vmware tools?   Is not difficult.  Within the virtual Center, select the host resource or a cluster.   Then select the tab "Virtual Machines".   If it is not already displayed, right-click on one of the headings at the top of the columns.   This will bring up a menu of the available to display columns.  Select "VMware Tools Status.   This will then give you a column when you view virtual machines which indicates if the virtual machines are up-to-date with the latest version of the tools.  This will not give you specific versions.  But it will give you an idea of what day and what is not.

  Take a look at some of the other available columns and add those that make sense.  There are fields for the declaration of use of the memory.    Add them and look to see who use virtual machines the most memory.   You will need to check each of them and talk to your users to know what they are doing which requires many resources.

  VMotion and HA are not related or dependent on each other.

  (1) again, this works because the virtual machines themselves live on storage shared and not bound to a specific host ESX (i). ESX implements non-persistent locks on a specific virtual machine, when the host goes down, these locks will eventually timeout. HA will launch the failover, allowing it to reregister the VMs failed and restart. Manually, you can walk through this process by the presence of a virtual machine that lives on the shared storage that runs on HostA, then it turned off and cancel the registration of the virtual machine. You would be so I re-register on HostB and turn on, and voila, you've just simulated a ghettoHA.

  (2) vMotion as you know already, performs a live migration of a virtual computer between two hosts, where as HA you will get some downtime of the virtual machine while it is rescued. The key is HA doesn't provide true high availability, it's just faster to recover.   Ok.. so, I have vCenter upwards and in the course of execution, have created my 'cluster' with two hosts. I have an ESX host 3rd I was using mode "assessment" within 60 days.

  This 60-day period was close that expires so I moved and the 3rd license added to this 3rd host.

  I would now like to bring this host to vCenter, for my 'sandbox network' and not actually add it to the 'cluster' so that I can run everything a customer.

  Now, it is said that I am unable to bring this host to vCenter, as it says that I don't have a license.

  So, how can I go on the withdrawal of the license, or get this host (already licensed) in vCenter?

  Or do I have to start from scratch and reload this bare metal esx host to return to Mode Eval?

  Since it's vShpere, there is "No license server" by not telling.

  Licensing vCenter says that 'two' licenses during the third host is the 3rd license already.

  Any help appreciated.

  By the way... I have searched for hours on forums, web sites, etc., with no clear solution.

  of your screen grabs, it definitel; appears as if you have only 2 licenses - as stated above, however, if your license covers only 6 processors, you could have used the additional licenses on them.

  It is really worth to check that, and if it is not the case, get your hands on VMware and ask why the additional licesnse does not appear in your portal.

  I have a single vmware esxi 4.1 host on a remote site and vcenter is a virtual machine, as well as 2 other virtual machines.  It is the target of SRM as well.

  In any case, I tried to address updates in the Update Manager and it expires just waiting to the power off vm.  There is no other host VM in this cluster is not as if something can vmotion off.  So I'm wondering because the Update Manager vcenter server running running on THIS host, if it were to close then maybe Update Manager could not perform?

  How can I update this host, currently on 4.1.0 260247.

  I have an another ESXi 4.0.0 171294 clocked at that site and it can also access the shared storage that can the 4.1 server.  I can't handle this in vCenter and vMotion things to him because I don't have a license to do.  But could I import vcenter to do this and it turns on and then try to restore the other host?

  I am trying to build a state machine, but I am struggling with understanding of the methods to determine what State to move to the next.  In other words, I have several States, but I don't want to go in any particular sequence.  If I States numbered 1 to 10, I want to be able to go 1-4-2-5-6-2-6-1-10 etc. in no particular order. I want the transition to the next State (and actions) to be determined by data stream, which may be random and require access to one of my 10 States at any time and in any order.

  I saw this photo on the white paper "Application Design Patterns: machinery of State", but it leaves out some important details.  How do I create the structure in BLUE showed 3 c?  When I try to create this table of enums, all are the same. I am not able to make a list of different enum values.  In other words, when I type '2', then all values in the Bulletin Board "2."

  There is a nice video example and easy to a state machine for the distribution of soda $0.15, however, this state machine moves in a single sequence of 5 cents, 10 cents to deliver; It does NOT illustrate the selection of a State "out of order".  I need to understand how a state machine can move State "5 cents" to distribute directly, with the addition of 10 cents in the State "5 cents.

  Can someone suggest a very good tutorial on how to make the switch to operate in a state machine?  I have read some documents available on ni.com, but, I can't find a good explanation of how do.  I remain confused.
