How to add an ESX host licensed to vCenter (vShpere4.1)

Currently licensed for: 3 guests (Advanced vShpere 4)

Ok.. so, I have vCenter upwards and in the course of execution, have created my 'cluster' with two hosts. I have an ESX host 3rd I was using mode "assessment" within 60 days.

This 60-day period was close that expires so I moved and the 3rd license added to this 3rd host.

I would now like to bring this host to vCenter, for my 'sandbox network' and not actually add it to the 'cluster' so that I can run everything a customer.

Now, it is said that I am unable to bring this host to vCenter, as it says that I don't have a license.

So, how can I go on the withdrawal of the license, or get this host (already licensed) in vCenter?

Or do I have to start from scratch and reload this bare metal esx host to return to Mode Eval?

Since it's vShpere, there is "No license server" by not telling.

Licensing vCenter says that 'two' licenses during the third host is the 3rd license already.

Any help appreciated.

By the way... I have searched for hours on forums, web sites, etc., with no clear solution.

Thank you

Howard

Interesting,.

of your screen grabs, it definitel; appears as if you have only 2 licenses - as stated above, however, if your license covers only 6 processors, you could have used the additional licenses on them.

It is really worth to check that, and if it is not the case, get your hands on VMware and ask why the additional licesnse does not appear in your portal.

  • Add production ESX hosts to a cluster

    Hi all

    I did some research in the admin guides and community forums, and I'm sure that I know what to do, but I would really appreciate a test of consistency here because the manipulation I do is in a production environment:

    I have a campus that contains two ESX areas that are managed by using vSphere and connected to a San. vMotion of works very well, the performance is very good (although the resources of the two boxes are fairly complete upward). However, I recently realized that I'd neglected to set up a cluster HA and DRS.  I want to remedy.

    I created the cluster with these specs:

    • the two HA and DRS, enabled
    • to the left, she also fully automated.
    • the power management of left
    • monitoring and host admission control enabled
    • leave the default settings for the behavior of the virtual machine
    • monitoring VM disabled
    • EVC enabled
    • the storage value of the swap with the virtual machine file

    I think that the next steps would be to add each ESX host consecutively and merged its resources with the cluster. However, here are a few questions:

    • How do you assess the risk factor to do this in a production environment (1 = perfectly safe, is a proven Scenario; 5 = you are out of your bloody mind? Do not)
    • Should I be triple-checking the SAN snapshots and planning of downtime for servers, or is it possible live and without any major qualms?
    • Am I right in assuming that it will increase my performance as well as provide better robustness of the campus, or should I expect a decrease in performance?

    Thank you very much in advance for your advice!

    Hey red,

    Addressing your particular situation, I would say yes to two questions.  Admission control HA is here to help you.  Ensure there are enough resources on the host computer to run the current and any expected load it will be after an HA event.  50% is close to default (but it is really based on the size of the slot) in an environment with two guests when guest cluster failures tolerates is set to 1 in a two and 25% host environment when the percentage of unused reserved as production capacity cluster resources in failover is left to its default value.

    If you have several virtual machines running that allows you to book 50% of your cluster resources (which it sounds like you have), then you have the option of "first category" your virtual machines and their giving priorities to restart event HA.  For their level, you'll want to active DRS (can be set to manual Automation), resource pools and you will need to configure your virtual machine under your HA settings options.  You'll want to pay attention to the priority of restarting VM here.

    I suggest you take a look at blog Duncan Epping http://www.yellow-bricks.com/ and Frank Denneman http://frankdenneman.nl/blog. They are all two fairly well the definitive answer to the HA and DRS questions and advice.

    Note: Epping and Denneman explained that the amount reserved by default resources when you use the host cluster failures tolerates is promising to reserve enough resources to power on virtual machines.  This reserve of resource does not on average current, account, or future default load.  If you want to manipulate this feature, modify the memory and CPU reserves, which are the numbers used to calculate the size of the slot.

  • How to test an ESX host

    What are the options for testing performance on ESX hosts?  Are there models of good OVF or vApps for ESX hosts test to determine their ability to stress?  For example, you want to determine how many virtual machines can run safely on a physical machine - is there an OVF template that will peg the CPU, memory usage usage and access hard drive at startup that you run a bunch of one host and one model OVF who will report on the usage statistics?

    Are there other (free) ways to stress tests of your physical servers?

  • Is it possible to add an ESX host less CPU

    Hello

    Currently in my farm, I have four Dell R900 ESX host. They have (4) Quad Core Procs and 128 GB of memory. Can I add an additional R900 server that does that (2) Quad Core Procs? I will strengthen the memory based on the existing, but processors are simply too expensive. HA and DRS will manage the differences in the number of procs?

    It is a statement of official support for the use of the CPUID of the forest SSSE3 mask.  Setting this bit can hide the SSSE3 instructions, allowing you to vmotion vm from a server on the 'A' list to a list of 'B', but is not supported by VMware.  While masking is generally safe, the process only "occult" bits for applications that use the CPUID instruction to generate a list of features that a processor is capable of.  If an application does not CPUID use to verify functionality and use them in any case, then you have a problem, that's why this mask is not supported.  Hope that makes sense.

  • How to restart vm esx host in different work HA?

    I understand that VMOTION = migration hot virtual machines on esx hosts. So, if HA uses VMOTION, how HA restarts VMs on another esx host when the original, we're out of service?

    I guess it will take to create an another vm on the available host using the same on the san .vmx file?

    IF we were to do it manually, it will be just import a virtual machine to another host on the right?

    Correct me if im wrong?

    A bit confused on the works of the HA behind the scene

    See you soon!

    VMotion and HA are not related or dependent on each other.

    (1) again, this works because the virtual machines themselves live on storage shared and not bound to a specific host ESX (i). ESX implements non-persistent locks on a specific virtual machine, when the host goes down, these locks will eventually timeout. HA will launch the failover, allowing it to reregister the VMs failed and restart. Manually, you can walk through this process by the presence of a virtual machine that lives on the shared storage that runs on HostA, then it turned off and cancel the registration of the virtual machine. You would be so I re-register on HostB and turn on, and voila, you've just simulated a ghettoHA.

    Here are a few extra links/documentation which may be useful for you better understand it:

    HA said:

    http://www.VMware.com/products/VI/VC/HA.html

    http://www.VMware.com/PDF/ha_datasheet.PDF

    vMotion explained:

    http://www.VMware.com/products/VI/VC/VMotion.html

    http://www.VMware.com/PDF/vmotion_datasheet.PDF

    (2) vMotion as you know already, performs a live migration of a virtual computer between two hosts, where as HA you will get some downtime of the virtual machine while it is rescued. The key is HA doesn't provide true high availability, it's just faster to recover. If you are looking for a true HA, take a look at VMware FT www.vmware.com/files/pdf/resources/ft_virtualization_wp.pdf

  • QueryAssignedLicenses problem to ESX host licensed features

    Hello

    I'm trying to get the feature list under license for a crowd of vSphere 4.0 by using the method of QueryAssignedLicenses via perl SDK.

    I can get the License Manager object, but whenever I get the managed object 'LicenseAssignmentManager' it is not defined.

    Here is the code I use:

    my $host;

    My = $host_views

    Vim::find_entity_views (view_type = > 'HostSystem');

    $host = @$ host_views [0];

    My $licenseSystem = Vim::get_view (mo_ref = > ($host->-> licenseManager configManager));

    my $licenses = Vim::get_view (mo_ref = > ($licenseSystem-> licenseAssignmentManager));

    My $licenseDummy = $licenses-> QueryAssignedLicenses();

    And this is the error message:

    "Cannot call method 'type' to a value not defined on line /usr/share/perl/5.8/VMware/VICommon.pm 1244."

    I tried to assign the return value of QueryAssignedLicenses(); object directly to an object, but the result is the same and I think that the method cannot be called from the LicenseAssignmentManager' is not defined.

    As shown on the thread: http://communities.VMware.com/message/1271444 , I tried with different methods, but all of them are not recommended for vSphere and I get a SOAP error.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Juan Aristizabal.

    Connecting to vCenter, you are unable to access LicenseManager through HostSystem object, you must use Service content of the vCenter: http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vc-sdk/visdk400pubs/ReferenceGuide/vim.LicenseManager.html

    It is here that you will find in licenseAssignmentManager

  • Disconnected ESX host cannot add to the CR

    It started with me being unable to power on a virtual machine that I created because of "Insufficient resources to meet the level of failover configured for HA" which is great because that's how to configure HA.  I tried to reconfigure the AP to the host by double-clicking on the host and select this option.  Once I did that it failed about 30% with "an error has occurred while setting up the HA Agent on the host" and the networking page disappeared from the configuration tab similar to what a lot of people reported during the upgrade, I think an earlier version.  This is not the case, I did not update anything.  Then I restarted service service mgmt-vmware restart and the ESX host disconnected from the VC altogether.  I can't use the VI client to connect to the host in question, but I am connected via the service console. All VM and the host not to requests ping and everything works. I've disabled HA and DRS and tried to add new ESX host that has not worked.

  • Add vcenter - I see all esx hosts too?

    Hello!

    I added our vcenter at VMAs, but when I do a 'vifp' mailing lists I see only the vcenter. Should I see all the ESX servers managed by the vcenter too or have to manually add all ESX host?

    You must add'em manually, or search for scipt to do.

  • Two vCenters and mobile from one to another ESX host

    I have an existing vSphere environment where all virtual machines on the local drive. This environment is managed by a physical vCenter Server.

    I've built a WHOLE new environment with three hosts and each has 4 Sockets, 6 hearts with 128 GB of each host. I also created a new vCenter Server and it is a virtual machine. All are connected to the iSCSI SAN.

    I know that the ESX hosts can be managed by a vCenter server at a time. Now, I want to add old esx hosts that have virtual machines on a local drive to the new environment that is connected to a shared storage. When I try to add a host on the new vcenter server, I get a message saying that the host is already managed by the old server vcenter and if I add it to the news that it disconnects. Which is the best way to do it, or should I disconnect hosts from the old server vcenter first?

    Also how I will move the virtual machines on the local disk to the San. I have company over 4.1.

    Thank you!

    I unplug and remove the host from the old environment and then add the host in the new.  This will allow your guests to continue to operate.  Once you have hosts in the new environment, you can use sVMotion (right click to migrate, move the datastore) to move your guests to a shared storage.

    Hello

    You must set the parameters of your ESXi host NTP.

    There is no timezoned in ESXi I know.

    Make sure when you look through the settings of Date and time on the ESXI host right now is what should be based on your local time.

    Let the time vC Ops to UCT. That should ensure the VAPP have the same time as the ESXI host.

    When you start the TIME you can check the time on the virtual computer is the same as hosts yoru.

  • How to add in DVS ESX hosts with vsphere SDK for perl?

    Hello

    I am a newbie to vsphere SDK for perl. Just started using it for automation of one month back. , I was looking for options to automate the addition of ESXi servers and their physical cards in the distributed virtual switch. I got some details on how to add using powerCLI. However, my requirements are in the use of vsphere SDK for perl. Any help would be appreciated.

    Have we not like subroutines or plug editable in vsphere SDK for perl inorder to add host ESX in DVS. ?
    Thank you and best regards,
    Lebou

    You can certainly do it in Perl.  I don't have a working example, but perhaps that William will be when he catches this thread

    If I have time tomorrow, I'll try to put something together to help you get started, but you can also simply map the logic of LucD script.

    Basically Get - view is equivalent to Vim: get_view() and New-Object calls should be mapped to the type of object in Perl, for example, instead of VMware.Vim.DVSConfigSpec New-Object, we $spec = DVSConfigSpec-> (again).
