  Two things can cause the Bookmarks button to "disappear" from the Navigation bar when the customization mode is closed.

  I found it under VIEW, Explorer bars, but I don't think it's the most recent version. In the meantime on Windows Vista with IE8 or 9 installed it should see the place under the bar of the Explorer display for some strange reason! I left it!
