  Possible reason for this behavior:
  I suspect that a third-party application to start conflicts and it translates into changing the resolution.   Hello Chaosdruid, This is the correct behavior, ctrl + f to open the search bar, try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe mode is a troubleshooting mode that disables some settings and disables most Add-ons (extensions and themes).

  If Firefox is open, you can restart in Mode without failure of Firefox in the Help menu by clicking on the restart with the disabled... modules menu item:
