  • Hiberfil.sys and pagefile.sys - I can't delete

    Hello
I have a computer laptop tecra s3 and after a fresh install of XP restore cd, I noticed that 4 GB of my C partition are 2 files:
    (1) C:\hiberfil.sys (around 2 GB)

All my C partition is 12.5 GB because of the small HDD (80 GB), so I really need the extra space.
Hiberfil I looked on the internet and this is the info of the RAM when I activate the Hibernate to close Notepad. I've ever used this function and in any case, it is disabled, there nothing on the hibernation in Control Panel-> Power Options, and when I want to activate stop-> hibernation, I can't because it is faded and I can't select it. So obviously this file I need, it's a hidden file system: how to remove it? I tried already the folder option-> view the file and I have uncheked Hide protected operating system files, but still I can not remove it.

    (2) C:\pagefile.sys (around 2 GB)
This file is the virtual memory that XP uses of my HARD drive as ram memory, I currently have 2GB of RAM.
If I reduce the amount of this virtual memory settings, what will happen to XP? He's going to become increasingly slow?
This laptop is important because I use it on my work place, so... I really need to work properly :)

Thank you, hope you have time for me soon :)

If you disable Hibernation in the Power Options (and the Toshiba Power Saver), you should be able to delete that file. If you can't, try to delete it in Mode without failure. From the start to access the Windows boot to Windows Startup menu, press F8.

Windows requires a swap file to work properly, so you should not delete the pagefile.sys file. If you do, it will be created again anyway.

PS. SD cards are cheap these days, so you can use a 16 GB SD card to store your files if the HARD drive is running out of space.

Use CCleaner (google is your friend) to delete unnecessary files from the HARD drive and clean the registry.

  • Why is Pagefile.sys not visible at the new location?

Previously, I had instructions here on how to move my swap file from the C drive to the D drive. I made a last week, using the Set button and reboot. everything works fine since then. However, I note that, although I could see Pagefile.sys himself when he was on the C drive, it is nowhere to be seen on the D drive. To check that I correctly followed the procedure of moving file I entered in the virtual memory box my computer > system properties where all of this is managed. The dialog box showed me the two discs. When I click once on the C drive, it only shows the option button "No paging file" as expected. When I click on the D drive, it displays a custom 3054-4095 MB paging file size. This value is both the region where options are selected and in the window above, where readers are listed. I fear that the lack of visibility on the D drive may indicate that the swap file was not properly defined upward.

Yes the pagefile is also where in the Defragmenter report. Well not fragmented!

  • Pagefile.sys running on a faster drive

My drive C drive where Windows XP Professional is installed is slower than my USB: I have a 8 GB 2.0 USB where I can put in place the pagefile.sys: it worked very well in Windows 2000 Professional.

How do in Windows XP because it's a dynamic o/s?

Several points to keep in mind:

1 - USB is not faster than internal drives.

2 - Windows does not allow for the placement of the swap file on removable drives.

3 - stack USB drivers (who have a start value 0 x 3) are initialized well after that the Session Manager creates the pagefile.

To create a swap file on a USB drive you Windows trick him into believing that the USB key is a fixed drive and you need to change the USB stack drivers of start-service type zero in order to have the loading Ntldr then so that the kernel can initialize until the Session Manager creates the pagefile.  It is possible, OEMS who sell embedded devices put the USB in the basis of critical data from the device and as a fixed device list and they change battery USB service entrances for the drivers to be loaded until the Session Manager starts.

So, how did you manage to make this happen under Windows 2000?  It was on a desktop / laptop ordinary or was it on an embedded device or computer of type EEEpc?

  • Why the "pagefile.sys" file has a 2.45 GB in size.

In drive C size of "pagefile.sys" get increases day after day. At present, it has 2.45 GB size.

Can someone explain to me the reason for his creation? Is it safe to delete?

Any kind of help is really appreciated!

This is some of the information that I asked for, but not all the information that I requested.

Click 'Start', 'Settings', 'Control panel', 'System', 'Advanced' tab in the 'Performance '.
section select 'Settings', 'Advanced' tab in the 'virtual memory '.

If the parameter is NOT size managed on the basis of the system, what are the parameters?

If you double-click on my computer, select (highlight) your C drive, right click and choose Properties, you can see the total capacity used space and free space on your drive.

    What are the numbers:

    Capacity
    Space used
    Free space

I would say that if you don't have at least 15% of free space (of total capacity), then you need to either do some maintenance, get rid of some things, move things or get a bigger hard drive.

I hope that someone else will tell you how to do the interview, because I have good grades on what to think.

  • Pagefile.sys has completely disappeared. It started when the power failed and my computer crashed.

My pagefile.sys has completely disappeared. This all started when the power failed and my computer crashed.
I get the message that he was away, I went to the performance and settings and tried to change custom settings & re-start.
No matter what I do, nothing works. I lost several hours of visiting sites for tips and nothing seems to help.
I was told when re-boots WinXP it creates the new file pagefile.sys and I should delete the pagefile.sys file may be corrupted on the C drive.
So I put the folders to show hidden files and delete pagefile.sys. I have re-set and tried to recover with no success.
There is now absolutely no pagefile.sys on my C drive. Anyone know how I can get back my pagefile.sys?
I want to get my virtual memory works again?
Thank you very much in advance!

I'd start first with the chkdsk/r.

Don't forget - if you have a factory installed recovery Partition, fixmbr will scan it as the Master Boot Record that written XP will equal not the MBR installed by the factory, so first run chkdsk /r (did I say that already)?

    Here are some instructions:

    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/SS/RCONSOLE.htm

Where people have no XP bootable media, here are my instructions:

If you have no XP bootable media (or aren't sure you have) create a bootable XP Recovery CD of Console and do not forget.

This is not the same as recovery disks that might have come with the acquisition of the system store.

You can make a bootable Recovery Console CD by downloading an ISO file and burn it to a CD.

The ISO bootable image file you need to download is called:

    xp_rec_con. ISO

    Download the ISO from here:

    http://www.mediafire.com/?ueyyzfymmig

Use a new CD and this simple and free program to burn your ISO file and create your bootable CD:

    http://www.ImgBurn.com/

When you install ImgBurn, DO NOT install the Ask toolbar.

Here are some instructions for ImgBurn:

    http://Forum.ImgBurn.com/index.php?showtopic=61

It would be a good idea to test your bootable CD on a computer running.

You may need to adjust the computer BIOS settings to use the CD-ROM drive as the first device to boot instead of the hard drive.  These adjustments are made before Windows tries to load.  If you miss it, you will need to restart the system again.

When you start on the CD, follow the instructions:

Press any key to boot from CD...

    Installing Windows... going to pronounce.

Press 'R' to enter the Recovery Console.

Select the installation that you want to access (usually 1: C:\WINDOWS)

You may be asked to enter the password (usually empty).

You should be in the folder C:\WINDOWS.  It's the same as the

C:\Windows folder that you see in Solution Explorer.

The Recovery Console allows base as file commands: copy, rename, replace, delete, chkdsk, fixboot, fixmbr, cd, etc.

For a list of the commands in the Recovery Console, type help at the prompt of commands or read on here XP Recovery Console:

    http://www.Microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/proddocs/en-us/recovery_console_cmds.mspx?mfr=true

A good idea before you start things must first verify the integrity of your file system by using the chkdsk command.

In the command prompt window, run the chkdsk command on the drive where Windows is installed to try to fix any problems on the afflicted player.

Running chkdsk is fine, even if he finds no problem.  It won't hurt anything to run it.

Assuming your boot drive is C, run the following command:

    CHKDSK C: /r

Let chkdsk finish to correct the problems, he could find.

It may take a long time for chkdsk complete or they seem to be "stuck".  Be patient.  If the HARD drive led blinks always, chkdsk is something.  Keep an eye on the amount of the percentage to be sure that it is still making progress.  It may even seem to go back sometime.

You must run chkdsk/r again until it finds no error to correct.

Remove the CD, and then type "exit" to exit the RC and restart the computer.

You have not to set the BIOS to boot the disk HARD since the CD won't be.

  • Pagefile.sys: it can be turned off the C drive?

I'm running out of space on C:, and I think I read somewhere that the system works better if the pagefile is not on the same partition as the operating system.  No matter what I do there still seems to be a file called pagefile.sys on drive C.  I use 2 GB of ram on a 64 bit windows system (core 2 duo Intel E4300 1.8 ghz cpu.)  What should I do?

UPDATE: before I did not put the swap file correctly. I put it now on drive D (separate hard drive), but its on the same partition as all my texts and media files.  Don't know how much difference that will make.  When I find a reliable partition creation program, I'll put in a separate partition.  In any case, the pagefile.sys file is now off the C drive.  So it makes sense.  My mistake.

I just wanted to clarify for other users.

  • I put the key to registry ClearPageFileAtShutdown to 1. Stop cold. Restarted. pagefile.sys always more than 2 GB.

    try to clear the pagefile.sys

the registry value set to 1

    pagefile.sys not cleared

The goal to clear the pagefile at shutdown is to clear sensitive computer information when you stop him so that subsequent inspection will not reveal data - the goal is not not to save disk space.  When you restart, pagefile will always be there.  The size of the pagefile is default of 1.5 times the amount of RAM you have in your machine.  For more information:

  • Try to reduce the size of the hard drive with pagefile.sys error!

That I put in the subject, I am shrinking my hard drive, so I can make another partition for storage, but every time I do it I get this: "you can't shrink a volume beyond the point where the files not movable. See 'defrag' event in the application log for detailed information about the operation when it is finished. "Well, do that and it's saying it's the pagefile.sys::%DATA's not draggable file. Now, I have already left the virtual memory on the C drive and placed it on another partition that HP had set aside for recovery disks. I also put the memory dumps that animate as well, but I get this: "Windows created a temporary swap file on your computer because of a problem that occurred with your paging file configuration when you started the computer." While the * happens next? How can I get the pagefile.sys off the C drive so I can narrow down?

Temporarily disable your pagefile, shrink your player, then turn on again.

  • "hiberfile.sys" and "pagefile.sys".

What are these files .sys they appeared suddenly in my hard drive C, containing windows. Their creation date, is even prior to my date of activation for windows. Should I keep or delete them, because they are massive files and take up close to 15 GB (hiberfil.sys = 6.3 GB and pagefile.sys = 8.00 GB) space on my HARD drive. Are these really important file or some kind of malware. Because they did not exist before. Kindly explain to me on these files and guide me on how to make...
    Thanks in advance.

    AMS

You need both.  They were always there you probably comes from their visible rendering.

The amount of ram = pagefile.  For example 8gigs ram = page file 8 gig
Hiberfil is necessary if ever 'Hibernate you' your computer.  It's abt 75% of the amount of ram you have

If you are that tight on space you probably have a bigger HD.  A 64-bit win 8partition can run more than 60 gigs.

    Hi jafrin.michel,

Thanks for posting in the Microsoft community.

Before you start the troubleshooting steps, I need the information required.

What version of the windows operating system do you use?

    Method 1:

If you are using windows 7, I suggest to perform a disk cleanup and verify.

This behavior can occur if the icon cache is not properly updated.

Important: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. • Why is my attempt to move pagefile.sys apparently failed?

In order to free up space on my C drive (the reasons why are for another post/thread), I followed the recommended procedure to move my pagefile (pagefile.sys) of the drive C to a larger internal hard drive D. However, when I rebooted, there is no file on the D drive. My system is set so I can see all the system files, nothing hidden, so it should have been there. I even used the search tool to find all files containing 'swap file' in his name and another search for any file with the following sizes. No luck. I will describe my settings here, and I hope someone can tell me if I made a mistake.
