How to remove a desktop folder icon

I inadvertently dragged one of my folders on the desk where an icon for this file has been created. It seems to be the FULL directory and not a shortcut. How can I remove it without deleting the entire folder please?

  • How to remove particular notification area icons?

    Hello

I would like to ask your help how to remove particular notification area icons (Windows 7 Professional). I mean, this isn't just 'Show' or 'hide '.

For example, I want to delete VLC Media Player and Microsoft Office OneNote in the list.

In addition, I don't want to restore the system icons, because all the icons will be removed.

Thanks a lot if you could provide solutions step by step.

You just want to remove the icons, or you want to stop the
programs icons are to run in the background?

If you just want to remove the icons, but keep the programs running,
You should check the programs themselves to see if they offer
you have this option. But if you want to stop background programs
start automatic and running, read the following:

First of all, note that you should be in * all * programs that
starts automatically, not only those who enter the system tray
(notification area). Show not all auto-start programs
themselves by an icon in the status bar.

On each program, you don't want to automatically start, check its
Options to see if he has the choice of not start (make sure you)
Indeed choose not to run, not just a "don't show icon.
Optional). Many can easily and better be arrested like that. If that is not
work, run MSCONFIG from the start. Run the line, and then click the Startup tab.
Uncheck the programs that you do not want to automatically start.

However, if I were you, I wouldn't do it just for the application of
the minimum number of running programs. Despite what many people say
you, you should be concerned, not with the way * a lot * of these programs
you run, but * that *. Some of them can degrade performance severely, but
others have no effect on performance.

Don't stop all programs to run willy-nilly. What you need to do
is to determine what each program is, what its value is up to you which
the performance cost is its running all the time. You can try
Internet search and ask questions about the details here.

Once you have this information, you can make a smart informed
decision on what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of.

    Hello

    • What version of Winodws XP do you use?

    Unfortunately, it is not possible.

You can use the backup utility to back up files and folders on a computer that is running Windows XP.

If you use Windows XP Home Edition, you can refer to the following steps:

Before you can back up important information on your computer, you must install the backup utility. The backup utility is included on the Windows XP Home Edition CD.

Note If you do not have the original CD of Windows XP Home Edition of Windows XP was preinstalled on your computer, contact the computer manufacturer or visit the Web site of the manufacturer for more information. You can also use the backup software that you purchase separately.

To install backup from the Windows XP CD:

    1. Insert your Windows XP CD into the CD or DVD from the computer player.
    2. Click exit.
    3. Locate the: \ValueAdd\Msft\Ntbackup folder on the CD.
    4. Double-click ntbackup.msi to install the backup utility.
    5. When the backup or Restore Wizard prompts you, click Finish.
    6. Remove the Windows XP CD.

Now that you have installed the backup utility, you are ready to back up your important information.

If you use Windows XP Professional, to back up your files and folders, follow these steps:

Note To back up files and folders, you must be connected to the computer as an administrator or as a user who belongs to the Administrators group. To verify that you are connected to Windows with a user account is an administrator on the computer, see the Microsoft Web site at the following address:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/GP/Admin (http://support.microsoft.com/gp/admin)

Note The following steps explain how to use the backup utility to back up your files and folders manually. You can also use the backup and Restore Wizard to back up your files and folders. However, the steps will be slightly different from those that are listed in the next section.

Step 1: Open the backup utility

    1. Click Startand then click run.
    2. Type ntbackup.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.

Note If you receive the following error message, make sure that you followed the steps in the "how to install the backup utility" section correctly:

    Windows cannot find 'ntbackup.exe'.
Step 2: Select the items to back up and select the location for the backup file
    1. Click Advanced Mode.

Note If the backup and Restore Wizard, the utility runs in Wizard mode. You can click to clear the always start in Wizard mode check box, and then restart the backup utility. If you continue to use the Restore Wizard and backup, the steps will be slightly different from those that are listed in the next section.

  • Click the backup tab.
  • In the menu of task , click new.
  • Select the check boxes next to the drives you want to back up. If you select files or folders, expand the drive where these files or folders. Then, select the check boxes for the files or folders you want to back up.
  • Select the System State check box that is located under my computer in the navigation pane.

Note If you want to save settings system and data files, back up all data on your computer and the system state data. The system state data includes the registry, COM + class registration database, files that are under the Protection of files Windows, the boot files and other system files.

  • If it is available to the backup destination list, click the backup destination that you want to use.

Note If you selected file at this point, type the path and the full name for which you want to back up data in the backup media or file name box.

You can specify a network share as a destination for the backup file. Generally, backup files have the .bkf file name extension. However, you can use any extension of file name you want.

  • Step 3: Start the backup

    1. To open the backup information dialog box, click Start Backup .
    2. Under If the media already contains backups, perform one of the following:
      • If you want to add this backup file to previous backup files, click append this backup to the media. This option adds the new backup in the existing backup file so that you can keep all the previous backups in a single file. This option is useful if you ever want to restore a backup from a specific day. Be aware that the size of the backup file will increase with each new backup. You can monitor the file size to make sure that it does not fill your hard drive over time. If the file becomes too large, you should consider saving the file on an external hard drive. Or, if you are concerned about the file using too much hard disk space, select replace the data on the media with this backup instead.
      • If you want to replace the files of previous backup with this backup file, click replace the data on the media with this backup. This option is useful if you want to keep the current backup and do not care to keep the previous backups. Or, use this option if you are concerned about the file using too much disk space on your computer.
    3. Click Advanced.
    4. Select the check box Verify data after the backup .
    5. In the Backup Type box, click the type of backup that you want to create. For a description of each type of backup, click the backup type and the description appears under "Description." You can select all of the following types of backup:
      • Normal
      • Copy
      • Incremental
      • Premium
      • Every day
    6. Click OK, and then click Start Backup. A backup progress dialog box appears, and the backup starts.

Step 4: Leave the backup utility

    1. When the backup is complete, click close.
    2. In the menu of task , click exit.

  • I have two folders in the same subdirectory with the same name. How to remove the extra folder?

I have 2 directories "documents" located in the same directory. They are as well located in C:\Documents and Settings\ [user_name]------directory. Duplicate folder is automatically updated with the same file names when I add files in the original folder. It looks like a pointer to the original folder, when I try to delete the duplicate directory. I get the following error message.

Can't delete My Documents: it is used by another person or program.
Close all programs that might be using the file and try again.

I deleted all files in the directory, rebooted the computer and attempted to delete the now empty folder and I get the same error message. Can you help me remove this duplicate folder.

    Note:
    ------

I am not able to rename the duplicate folder... If I try to rename, the original folder is renamed... But not the duplicate. Also the duplicate folder becomes empty (since it runs a pointer to the original folder, when the double original of renowned gets is empty)

In Windows XP, all user folders were located under the C:\Documents and Settings folder.

In Vista , all user folders are located under the folder C:\Users .

Vista Documents and Settings folder is not a real file it's a junction folder that points to the Folder C:\Users.

A junction is as a shortcut that points to another file, that is why these records have a shortcut (arrow) overlay icon. In Vista, the only reason why the Documents and Settings junction is for the old installers who are looking for a Documents and Settings folder. When they try to access the folder Documents and Settings, the junction in silence re - runs Setup to the C:\Users folder.

The default permissions for the Documents and Settings junction is access denied, even for the administrators of .

The only way that a user can access this file actually is if the access permissions have been changed.

For a more detailed description of this topic and a list of all the junctions see the following Web site.

    Windows Vista Junction Points:
    http://www.Svrops.com/Svrops/articles/jpoints.htm

I recommend that you move all your files and immediately stop using the Documents and Settings folder to avoid more problems.

If this just started recently, I recommend that you use the system restore back to a point before the documents and settings folder was first access.

Ok. So on my desktop (Windows XP Home Edition, VPR Matrix) and my laptop (Windows 8.1, ASUS X200CA) I'm having a problem removing an icon on the desktop... I don't want to send it to the trash or uninstall the program on my desktop, I added the Solitare icon by mistake and so I threw it in the trash, so when I clicked on it from the start menu, she appeared with an error message saying "Windows is looking for . You want to find yourself? "and two buttons saying 'Browse' and 'Cancel '. If I clicked on cancel, he would say "the file has probably been moved, renamed, or deleted." I don't want on my desk! I have, however, a widget of Roxio Drag-to-disc, and so what I do sometimes is I did drag the icon of Solitare behind the widget, but most of the time I move the widget. I uninstalled a program and then tried to put the icon on the desktop to the trash.  I get an error message that says that the program cannot be found and try again.  How can I get rid of the icon?

    Hello

Reboot and see if the icon is still there. If so, try the following:

Go to control panel/Folder Options, view tab, set the options so that you can see the hidden files and folders and show protected operating system files. You should now be able to see a desktop desktop.ini file. Delete and restart. See if that helps.
