  How to merge files into a single PDF:

  1. In Acrobat, choose file > Create > combine files into a single PDF file.
  2. Click Add files and select the files you want to add.
  3. Click, drag and drop to rearrange the files and pages. Double-click a file to expand and reorganize the individual pages. Press the delete key to delete the unwanted content.
  4. When you have finished to organize files, click on combine the files.
  5. Select file > save as > PDF.
  6. Name your PDF file, then click Save.

  I tried with a file. What happens is that you get a linked file. Go in the links Panel and then select Image Embed. This will put the objects of the original file into the new file but IF effects any multiple appearances of the original file will be returned under the grouped objects, and are difficult or impossible to obtain as soon as they were. They printed probably OK, but what happens is that the file is re-created from the PDF of the file part that has been flattened so that the effects are more alive.

  The contents of the file can only be sorted by name, date of creation, file type or file size.  To put them in order, you need that you probably need to rename them.  Try adding 01 at the beginning of the name of the first file, 02 for the second, etc.   (If you have more than 100 then use 001, 002)

  At least if the collage consists only of photos, you can consider all the way using Photoshop.

  In any case I think adapting the resolution is crucial, perhaps in a balance between beautiful and beastly. Illy can only adapt the resolution when it exports (or save for web).
