I saved partitions with all personal data using Acronis, but had no time to use the recovery Partition before leaving on vacation. The repair shop wiped everything, including the recovery Partition, before reinstalling the operating system. I am pleased to say that the repair shop agreed to re - install the 32-bit operating system so I have now to do something "real". Nevertheless thank you for pointing me to the finger this informative document. It will come useful when I go to install Windows7 on my own PC.
