How to upgrade Mtn Lion to El captain and not lose anything

I am really a novice and resisted the upgrade because of this.  Now, my browser version is not supported and I can't access normal websites for the banking, credit cards, etc. so I'll have to. I need to upgrade to El Capitan, but reading reviews so so on this process to be successful.  I don't want to lose my documents and 3 000 photos.

I don't have a dvd with the system drive, so I bought a disc external hard years (Seagate Free Agent GoFlex), doesn't not use it and now realize the system requirements are bad.  I have an icloud account apparently because the object of research and I was able to connect earlier, but no pictures are there.  The instructions read to go to Iphoto, preferences, then select to turn on the icloud photo library.  I went to iphoto preferences, but it wasn't an option to turn on.  So I guess I can't save in the cloud or the other.

How ensure my docs and photos are stored and upgraded to El Capitan safely and I hope without problem?  I really need help here.  The apple store nearest is 3-4 hours where I live btw.
