  In my opinion, if you install the operating system on the unit you you use the recovery CD provided because it has been tested and it works without any problem.   Unfortunately, you will need to buy the 64-bit version, unless you can get HP to you give 64-bit free citing inability to use all of the memory as a customer support/advocacy.   But you should check on HP website to see if your model was first 64-bit drivers.

  He will have to do a new installation as well.  And if HP is not actively support 64-bit for your model, you will lose the HP software (most consider bloatware anyway).  You will also lose built in recovery option.  So, at least, make sure you create your restore disks.

  You may be able to wash to recover the partition, but I don't know how you would be able to use it without recovery software that HP has loaded.

  install a driver - reboot - check that it is installed and try again if necessary.
