HP Envy 17-j141na: recovering a system after 'repair '.

I recently had a hardware failure on my laptop and my backup data and sent it for repair

The only repair option that was given to me is to erase completely and factory to restore the operating system. In fact, what did the repair people has been remove my drive and replace it with a new vacuum waiting to be set up with Windows 8.

Of course, I want to go back to the situation where I have a viable version of my laptop and apparently the only option I have to do is to re - install all software! (I think that 'like', which could take days, I'll have to contact all by software publishers to bring them to re-license a lot of £1000 of software I have on there it will break and I'll have to do it again!)

So I turned off the screen install Windows 8 and completely (and I mean completely) the laptop brick. When it turns on it flashes the caps lock and will not work even BIOS recovery, ignores F10, F2 etc.

I contact support, and they are absolutely insistent, that I'm going to need all reinstall. So I was wondering if anyone knows what is happening.

The system is built around UEFI?

The system has been improved in the UEFI?

I'll be able to go in the installation process of Windows 8, upgrading to 10 and then switch to my old drive?

I will be able to configure the system as Windows 8 and then put in place so that I can dual boot from my old drive?

If I put all this from scratch what steps should I take to avoid this recurring situation.

I am also concerned by what happened to my old drive that came with the laptop. HP support assure me that they treat all the personal in compliance data consider but not have given me any indication whether if the drive that was removed has been removed safely (wipes x 35 times) and reformatted or destroyed. So if it's wrong, yet once I need to find how to partition the data on the laptop, so I can send it without composed of my personal data.

So, am a feeling that I have a laptop that I can not put the data of a personal nature, I can't use it for this purpose, I bought it to left (i.e. to install my software companies and lead by the activities of work at home) and now is just a really expensive browser?

Appreciated by any reflection on a way forward.

Hello @elcockh,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

I read your message and understand that your HP Envy 17-j141na does not work correctly. I have studied the issue and have developed a possible resolution. First of all, please perform a reset. Once this is done, please follow the steps described in this document:

Computers laptops HP - computer won't start (Windows 8)

The system is built around UEFI?

The system has been improved in the UEFI?

The system has UEFI functionality in the BIOS, allowing it to have secure boot and other features.

If you succeed in installing windows 8, and then upgrade to windows 10; then want to install your old drive and it is still in working condition, you can trade. I suggest you perform a clean Windows 10 installation. If you are able to install the old drive in accordance with the specifications of the maintenance and service guide and know how to set up a dual boot and the old drive is in working order, then you can dualboot. The best things to do to avoid that the faulty laptop is to reduce heat and make sure it is updated and perform regular maintenance.

Tips to use, carry and protect your laptop from HP

HP Notebook PC - cleanup your PC laptop

HP computers - tune (Windows 8) slow system performance

HP computers - create a recovery Image on disc or save a recovery Image on a USB Flash drive

If the document does not have you helped to solve the problem, try to restore the BIOS.

Thanks, I look forward to your response with the result.

If this post helped you, feel free to click on the thumbs up!

  • Recovering a system of vista OEM on a Satellite A300

    I already bought a Satellite A300 with vista Premium SP1. Then I installed ubuntu on my computer.
    Unfortunately now my Vista does not work. He wasn't just any CD/DVD recovery with pc.

    I've been searching to recover my system but I found nothing didn t. My system has perhaps only OEM? Then, he didn't need recovery CD/DVDs... but I don't know what I have to do...

    Please help me!

    Hello

    you have formatted the hard drive FULL? If yes then you need to get a toshiba recovery media, because there is no way if the HARD drive has been formatted to bring your Vista.

    You know that your machine has been equipped with a HARD drive recovery that is stored on a hidden partition on your hard disk drive.
    A possible recovery of HARD drive can be activated by pressing F8 before Vista starts and then choosing something like "Repair system" or similar. The recovery will completely wipe your C: drive and put on a new Vista with everything by default on the system drive.

    USUALLY, the user must create a recovery this recovery partition disk which is made by a program called "recovery disk creator. This application is already installed on all machines with a possible recovery of HARD drive and you'll get a reminder after Vista starts for the first time to create this recovery to fix it yourself in the case of a hard disk failure. Since you Didna´t created and just format everything (like ubuntu) it´s your fault and you will need to buy a new drive.

    Please refer to an ASP (certified partner) in your country and ask them to recovery.

    Welcome them

  • Windows 7 unrecoverable system after installation of ArcGIS - KB973688 and KB954430 errors

    Hello!

    I am running Windows 7 ultimate x 32 and windows update will not install two updates after installing ArcGIS 9.2:
    -Update for MSXML Core services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB973688)
    -Update for MSXML Core services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB954430)

    I tried several times with retry and installation manual several times with and without boot and startup (disabled UAC; admin install...). No question.

    I get to kb973688 errors:
    -Error code 643 (try it with windows update)
    -HRESULT: 0x800736FD (installation manual try, it stops at 2/3 progress bar, saying "Publishing product information").

    WindowsUpdate.log said several times:
    -WARNING: Failed to evaluate installed rule, updateID is {...}
    -WARNING: Failed to evaluate installed rule, updateID is {...}

    Between the parentheses, there are different channels such as D8BD0CF7-C4A8-48A8-9B1F-E791CE07F934.

    I tried to uninstall the updates with Add/Remove windows components, but no components are presented.

    CrapCleaner (ccleaner) tool shows, however, that there is a system restore point at a time where KB973688 was supposed to be installed.

    Finally, I tried the system restore to a couple of restore points, but restoration said that he cannot restore (!).

    So my last try: clean install from Windows 7, Windows XP Mode, installed ArcGIS 9.2 v. in Win XP Mode and I was back again smooth and clean.

    My question is: how is it possible that any application can corrupt and Win 7 so much! We hope enough that I got the chance to start, but if not, how can I recover my system and I want to say my system restore points and my options to add or remove system components?

    Have a happy new year!

    I found the following solution on the ESRI website that has worked for me.  It is a minor registry fix which gives more storage space for the Windows registry:

    Update MS in question above installed as soon as this fix has been applied.

    If restore work not and you do not have a Vista DVD from Microsoft, do a repair disc to do a Startup Repair:

    Download the ISO on the link provided and make a record of repair time it starts.

    Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.

    At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu.

    When you have changed that, insert the Bootable disk you did in the drive and reboot.

    Link above shows what the process looks like and a manual, it load the repair options.

It cannot be used to install or reinstall Windows Vista, and is just a Windows PE interface to recovering your PC. Technically, we could re-create this installation with downloadable media media freely from Microsoft (namely the Microsoft WAIK, several gigabyte download); but it is pretty darn decent of Microsoft to present Windows users who might not be able to create such a thing on their own.

    Read all the info on the website on how to create and use:

    ISO Burner:http://www.snapfiles.com/get/active-isoburner.html

    It's a very good Vista startup repair disk.

    You can do a system restart tool, system, etc it restore.

    It is NOT a disc of resettlement.

  • recover my system. used to install Windows Vista. get the message cannot open the file E:\Sources\Install.wim. Also the code error 0 x 80070002

    So all this started because I tried to clean my computer to give to a friend. I tried refomatting the hard drive, but something was wrong here. After that, when I turn on the computer I get a black screen with message Bootmgr missing. I read a little inside and saw that I could download a Windows Vista recovery disk because my computer did not come with one.
    After that I downloaded and burned the ISO image to a CD, things started looking better. I got to the screen when you select the language and keyboard. Then install windows screen. My options there were 'Install now' and 'repair your computer '. When I try to install, I put in my product key that seems fine. The next message I get is "Windows cannot open the required file E:\Sources\Install.wim. The file does not exist. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. "Error code: 0 x 80070002.

    Any help would be appreciated. Really want to give my friend a laptop that wont even turn on. Laughing out loud

    Was it Neosmart?

    This isn't an installation disc. It's a record of startup repair!
    You use the repair disk option, not Install.

    How to get Vista recovery Media and/or to use the Vista recovery Partition on your computer.

    There is no Vista free download legal available.

    https://secure.TX.Acer.com/rcdb/main.aspx?brand=Acer

    Contact your computer manufacturer and ask them to send a recovery disk/s Vista set.

    Normally, they do this for a cost of $ small.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    In addition, ask them if you have a recovery Partition on your computer/laptop to restore it to factory settings.
    See if a manual provided with the computer or go to the manufacturer's website, email or you can call for information on how to make a recovery.
    Normally, you have to press F10 or F11; Acer is in some models Alt + F10 at startup to start the recovery process...
    Another way I've seen on some models is press F8 and go to a list of startup options, and launch a recovery of standards of plant with it, by selecting the repair option.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Ask them if you can also make recovery disk/s for the recovery Partition in case of a system Crash or hard drive failure.

    They will tell you how to do this.

    Every computer manufacturer has their own way of making recovery disk/s.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Or borrow a good Microsoft Vista DVD (not Dell, HP, etc).
    A good Vista DVD contains all versions of Vista.
    The product key determines which version of Vista is installed.
    There are 2 disks of Vista: one for 32-bit operating system, and one for 64-bit operating system.
    If install a cleaning is required with a good DVD of Vista (not HP, Dell recovery disks):
    Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.
    At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu
  • DreamSpark system after completing a school
    Hi all, I have a question what will happen with my system I downloaded during school time of the spark of dream. It will not work when I finish school? What happens on this time? Can I use my operating system after this time normally?
    You can continue to use it even when you graduate. But if you were to format and need to reinstall the software and that you don't have the product key, you will not be able to use it more or recover the key.
    Then follow these steps:
    -Have a back-up copy the installation files.
    -Most importantly, have a backup of the key product that you can use to reinstall the software and start it again by phone if necessary.
    The main problem is to change the mini. I must begin by LAN to disable. After the reboot: 'NTLDR is missing... ". »
    After a lot of experience, I think, I did more damage than necessary.
After so many years, working on the construction of computer & repair, it's new to me.
    Hello
    1. have you made changes on the computer before this problem?
    2 - what you want to say that you receive this error message during the installation of Windows XP?
    Check to see if the following is useful.
    Method 1: Disconnect all devices non-essential connected to the computer and restart. Check to see if it boots normally.
    Method 2: You may need to check the settings of the BIOS (Basic Input\Output System). Check if the hard drive is detected. If this is not the case, check the physical connections. Refer to the manual to check the same.
    Warning of the BIOS:
    BIOS change / semiconductor (CMOS) to complementary metal oxide settings can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the configuration of the BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Changes to settings are at your own risk.
