  I would like to know what is the max Ram I can update in my laptop HP G62-b51SI?

  At the moment I have 2x2gig of Ram. When I insirted 2x4gig ram, the laptop wouldn't start.

  The problem with that is that if it has a global maximum of 4 concerts there also a max per slot of 2 GB. So, theoretically a 4 GB does not work in a slot, if max is really 4 gigs. If 4 GB works when it is installed by itself, then we can have a bad location or a problem of bad module. This seems like an extreme long shot, but what you have to lose by trying?

  I don't understand all this rigamarole.

  It's very confusing. It seems that HP has copied some info from Intel about the specifications of the chipset and I couldn't make either heads or tails of it on the Intel site.

  Max RAM per slot is 4 GB.

  I installed 16 GB in mine.

  The max RAM always depends on installed chipset.
  I put t know what chipset is in charge of your laptop but you could install a tool of diagnosis of equipment as for example Everest home edition and you could check chipset.

  Check the chipset specifications and properties on the Intel page.
  Then, you need to know what amount of RAM max is possible.

  With regard to 4 GB media.
  Akuma is right. The 32-bit OS can see only 3.2 GB
  Only the 64 bit OS can handle more than 3 GB of RAM

  If I update my processor can who also say I might have more ram? like if your max ram 8 GB but you upgraded to a superior processor, could you get more ram without something bad happening? also, why is there a maximum ram in the first place? (recommended by HP or something, not the OS max)

  The answer to your question is no. the processor has nothing to do with the amount of RAM you have. See Bill Smithers response for more details.

  If your laptop is the Intel 5 series chipset, the max memory is 8 GB.

  The service manual indicates your PC a series Intel 5 (HM55) chipset (Chapter 1, page 2)

  If it has the Intel 6 series chipset, the maximum memory is 16 GB.

  Normally, if the PC is shipped with processors intel generation second, it can take 16 GB of memory.  Your i - 5 450 is an Intel 1st generation of processor.

  The information you read on this link you posted affect how the operating system memory can answer, not how much memory material can respond.

  Both the HP motherboard specifications and the specifications indicate 1 GB maximum. You can take a chance on two dimms of 1 GB by train but understand the return policy before you buy.

  Your PC was built is 2004 so it is old enough to make improvements.
