Hypervisor upgrade ESXi ESXi 4 paid 5.1

We are currently managing the free version of ESXi 4.0, with 8 virtual machines running on it (pretty small machines).  Let's add a second server to our environment to run ESXi 5.1.  We will buy 5.1 ESXi licenses for both servers.  I am currently working on the best way to upgrade my server ESXi 4.0 5.1 when purchase us the license 5.1 and am looking for feedback.

Since the new server will be setup from scratch, is wise to configuration server and vCenter, move the virtual machine to off the area of ESXi 4.0 on the new 5.1 box, box 4.0 upgrade and then replace the virtual machine on the old 4.0 box?  Is this possible with simply being the version of the hypervisor 4.0 box?  I'm looking for in the little downtime as possible.

Any input or advice for the upgrade are greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

Hi Busterbrown,

You have no downtime to perform the task. Please follow the procedure below.

1 update/install vCenter 5.1

2. install ESxi on new Server 5.1

3. create a cluster in vCenter and add the server (4.0 and 5.1)

4 migrate virtual machines to new server

5. turn the ESXi 4.0 in maintenance mode

6. upgrade to ESXi 5.1

7 balance virtual machines.

You can upgrade ESXi 4.x to 5.x ESXi interactively by starting the system with the 5.x ESXi installation CD. At some point, you will be able to choose if you want to upgrade or install and if you want to keep the existing VMFS data store.

  • Thinking on upgrading ESXi 4.1 to 5.0 in a cluster host

    Hi all

    I have the cluster:

vCenter 5.0 and many hosts running ESXi 4.1

I want to improve the hosts to 5.0.

    My question:

There's a question if I do an upgrade offline (using the ESXi installation CD).

-How about if I want to do a new install of the host? Should I remove the host first of the bunch?

-Can I migrate the virtual computer first off the coast of the host for both methods?

    Thanks in advance.

    Fajar.

If you have multiple hosts in the cluster, you can pass the host one

-Put a host into maintenance mode, that you plan to upgrade, then all the other virtual machines will have to migrate to another host (without interruption)

-If you are installing freshly host, always the data store you won't get in shape, therefore inherited vmfs3 features will be there, even without the existing data store.

-No need to turn off the vm or host for migration, go with vmotion functionality.

  • How upgrade ESXi 3.5 U3 to ESXi 3.5 U4 without VirtualCenter?

The upgrade guide published by VMware is 100 pages and seems to assume you have VirtualCenter. How ESXi improved, U4 without the use of VirtualCenter?

    Nick,

I understand your frustration. VMware tends to complicate things a bit, but once you learn to read and (lots of reading) you'll have as its all not so bad. But without going to the topic far, VMware provides everything you need to update your server ESXi/servers very easily. The method that Tony posted above is the way to do it and is fully supported IS the SAME method that I recommended. I have almost 200 guests that I update with the infrastructure update utility. When you install the VI Client on your machine from management, it asks you if you want to install the Update Manager Service, you MUST place a check box this box for the installed application. If you do not have it, re - install your infrastructure client and make sure that you have selected him. When you do, run the app, select the server from your list that you want to update, it checks for updates and if you want, appkly them. You must reboot the host AFTER updates are applied, but after hours. The walk through above is entirely correct.

I hope this explains more, but you should have installed program, which is installed when you install the client infrastructure.

I see 'Running control compatibility', but without end (running all night)

New installation of Esxi 4 on this servers run without problem, it's not a problem of hardware compatibility.

Pure install permanently the way forward, it only takes a few minutes.

Once done, load the new tools, and then add the existing data store.  Navigate through it and right-click on each VMs .vmx file and select "add to the inventory.  Return to the main screen and then switch them on

  • VMware vSphere Hypervisor upgrade

    Hi friends,

Small question. Can I put my free esxi, vSphere hypervisor 5.0 to 5.5/6.0 free edition by using the esxcli command?

You mentioned in your order, data on releases as "ESXi - 6.0.0 - 20151004001-standard" this will upgrade to the standard or keep the free version? (vSphere Hypervisor 6). Please specify.

It is just the name of the profile image and has nothing to do with the free hypervisor from the version under license. Your image profile name is also "*-standard. Software-Wise there is no 'free' software different editions and ' paid/standard' anyway, it's just a matter of license that you use on a host computer and the same installation.

  • After the creative Cloud the upgrade to the account paid trial Apps works does not, Win8 Preview

I am currently working on a project for a client when the trial ran out to the creative cloud, I went and updated the account to the account paying and now none of the applications starts. Get "Application has stopped working" for Application Manager, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Fireworks, Dreamweaver... (you get it..). My system is running the preview of windows 8, but all applications functioned until I started to pay for the Service. I tried to uninstall it but the error unistaller. I tried the Adobe cleaner but seems to do nothing. I ran as admin and win7 compatibility Windows XP, applications and everything else I can think.

I need quick help... Now that I'm paying for him nothing works... :-(

We must keep in mind that Windows 8 is still pre-release, so unexpected behavior is likely, but you said that these applications have been use to work fine intiallly, so something has changed on the machine and the new update to Win 8.

In addition, please try the suggestions below: -.

    1) check in the new user account

    (2) uninstall the software, run the cleanup tool and reinstall them.

  • VMWare ESXi hypervisor of 5.5 Free Edition on a server explosion 2

    Hi forum,

I just installed a hypervisor 5.5 ESXi on a HP Server a test socket.

It works great and I could license with free ESXi license.

Now, I would like to upgrade an acual ESXi 5.1 Fujitsu server with two explosion (2 x Xeon E5-2630 6 c/12 t) and 64 GB of RAM.

The server is in eval mode 60 days of ESXi 5.1 because of the 64 GB of Ram. The license hypervisor free ESXi 5.1 only works for 32 GB of Ram, so I couldn't activate it.

Is it possible to update AND license the machine two struggling with ESXi hypervisor from 5.5?

My housing a real test-system shows that the license is valid for a power outlet. Can I register two free hypervisor 5.5 licenses on the Fujitsu 2-socket-server or is a license enough.

In the worst case, it does not work with 5.5

I only have a single ESXi server, so I need a vCenter and so on.

At would be in your opinion?

    Thank you very much

    Yes it's quite right.

  • Update ESXi Hypervisor using CLI

    Hi all

I have ESXi 4.1 hypervisor (free version). IM managing it in vSphere Client. Good enough for now. But I want to update host (ESXi) with all the patches (security, occasional updates). I read that the only way to do this without having to buy special tools is by CLI. So can you tell me if the following steps are correct and safe for my case?

    1. download vsphere CLI

    2. go to the judgment and customer vshpere machines

    3. Enter maintenance mode

    4. go to the CLI and type:

    > cd bin
    > vihostupdate.pl -i -bundle [path_to_patch].zip -url https://[IP_of_ESXi_host]/sdk/webservice

    5. Repeat this for all patches i want to insert into ESXi
    6 Turn off maintaince mode
    7. Start all machines

Is that ok and safe to do it. I don't want to broke my ESXi host instance, couse then im in pretty troubles.

Second question is in this steps above i can upgrade to ESXi 5.0?

    Thanks in advance,
    Bastian

  • The ESXi 4.1.0 to 6.0 upgrade. -upgarde and best practices

    Hi guys,.

We are a small business with a single physical server, ESXi 4.1.0 installed with approx. 8 VMs. We plan on buying Essential Kit 6.0 ESXi because that's all we need right now. However, as VMWare says that 4.1.0 to 6.0 upgrade is NOT supported (matrices of the interoperability of products VMware), how we improve our host and VMS?

I guess the correct way will be upgraded from 4.0. 5.5 U3 first, then to 6.0. However, if we buy the 6.0 license essential Kit, that we will be able to always download and install and upgrade of the host and all VMs to U3 5.5, and 6.0. Essentials?

In addition, what are the best practices to upgrade a single host with multiple virtual machines? What I did research, we should back up important files from virtual machine, all critical data, etc. All recommendations are welcome. My understanding is that the upgrade also virtual machines will be upgraded automatically, that's correct - methods of upgrade to ESXi 5.5 (2058352) | VMware KB

    Best regards

    Hello

As you said, you cannot upgrade host ESXi 4.x to 6.x, you must first upgrade 4.x to 5.x and then switch to 6.x

Before moving to 5 or 6, make sure you ESXi host is compatible with ESXi 6.

Check cheque and VMware hardware compatibility list if your server is listed.

Although you'll have a 6 ESXi license kit, you can download ESXi 5.x and use it to upgrade process.

Only if you need to use 5.x permanently, then you need to get your license keys downgraded to 5.x, otherwise once you upgrade host to 5.x, go ahead and level to ESXi 6.x

    Backup-

Before you begin the upgrade, make sure that you have backup of all VMs critics.

Either you can download/export all VMs as OVF, or you can use Veeam's free edition to make the backup of virtual machines

    -Update

You can join the server ESXi ISO Installer and boot server form ISO and update.

During the Installation process make sure to select ' PRESERVER VMFS and upgrade ESXi host '

If you do not keep vmfs, all virtual machines will get deleted during the installation/upgrade process.

Once you get ESXi Host upgrade to Upgrade VMFS 5.x version so that it can support 6.

Then finally the ESXi host to 6.x upgrade, yet once make sure PRESERVE you VMFS during installation.

If you have vCenter Update manager, use update reach the average upgrade easy it is to upgrade.

    Thank you

  • The upgrade to ESXi 4.1 with storage iSCSI software to ESXi 5.5

I intend to upgrade ESXi 4.1 with which I have attached to ESXi 5.5 iSCSI software storage

I've updated all my guests who were on the SAN storage with no problems.

I would like to know that if it there's nothing I should take care before I update the host connected iSCSI to ESXi 5.5, as for the hosts with SAN attached storage I made to remove the cables of SAN before upgrading the host.

Also, if all known problems, you will be informed during the upgrade to ESXi 4.1 to ESXi 5.5 with iSCSI Software storage, please let me know?

If there is no different process to upgrade coz in ESXi 4.1 I do not see this link ports of iSCSI vmkernel ports software iSCSI but I know in ESXi5.5 we have to or I just launch a procedure of standard upgrade via the Update Manager and everything will be taken care?

    Thanks in advance

With ESXi prior to version 5, linking ports had to be done via command line. However, if it has been configured correctly, you should be able to upgrade to ESXi 5.5 (assuming that the host has not been previously updated since version 3). BTW. the last time that I disconnected the host of storage for an upgrade has been with ESX 3.0.
