I am not able to access more than 2 GB of RAM under Windows 7 64-bit. How to solve this problem?

I bought a new laptop - Asus X42JY with 6 GB of RAM. My system properties computer watch 5.86 GB usable memory. But I can't seem to access more than 2 GB. During the use of games and video editing software, they start to get stuck when the piston reaches 2 GB mark. The CPU Gadget even refrigerators up to 34% of RAM. How can I solve this problem?
