You receive an error message in Internet Explorer: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".

I would recommend that you use your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware product to do a thorough scan in safe mode to make sure that all the remains of spyware and Trojans is deleted.

  • FIXED ~ can't access the windows update Web site ~ FIXED

I'm editing my question details & scored the title to indicate that the problem has been corrected.

I am sharing my 'dose' for these sho could also have a similar problem with Windows Update.  I do not have a Browser Helper Object enabled, which was to be enabled - "MUWebControlClass".  Of course that was axtivex needed control.  Windows Update now performs normally for me & I was able to successfully download & install my updates - yay!

My original message follows the stars below...

    ***********

... the desktop running windows xp pro sp3 & IE8

For what it's worth, I go to the Microsoft site & downloaded IE 8 & installed, as my first troubleshooting, before you come on this forum.  Theoretically, I should be as up-to-date as I can be with XP Pro SP3 & IE8, but I wanted to see that everything had been downloaded.  Well, I can't this info now.

I wanted to see which updates had been installed & when I clicked on the link for Windows Update, said the "Welcome to microsoft update" page, below the message to install the activex control required to view the Web site... fthere is no popup message any that I can right click on to install an activex control.

I googled similar questions on this forum & tried a similar question MrFixIt & who has not resolved the problem I encounter.

IE8 is NOT my default browser, or generally leave automatic updates 'ON' unless I'm updating.

I try to keep my current computer with the Windows updates on a monthly basis, I have to use IE8 for a couple of Web sites.  My current default browser is Dragon of Comodo.

Your input & feedback & suggestions are appreciated!  Thank you all in advance.

«Click Start ---> 'run'---> and in the dialog box, type "inetcpl.cpl" without the quotes and click on ' OK'.» Click on the "Security tab"--"custom level button" and scroll down to the box "Download signed activex controls" and select ""prompt(recommended"). Click ok and exit. This should activate the InfoBar at the top of the screen, when you visit windows update to download the activex.

    Good luck.

    2. open the Web browser to explore and go to http://safety.live.com.
3 scan the OneCare Safety Scanner full Service.
    4. take note of the items that are detected, but cannot be deleted, as appropriate. Get back to me with the names of the infections that cannot be removed, if necessary.
    5. after removing the infection (if any), start in Normal Mode by restarting just the normal computer like you do it.

Anyone know if there is a problem with the "Windows Update" site? As of May 11, 2010 I could not access it for 2 days now.  I get an error report indicating that he has a "problem with the site '... Not sure if it's my computer or the site itself. I just need to check updates and download them. I would be grateful for any feedback...  Thank you!
    ~ Jenifer

It is without a doubt.  There were a few patches published today, and I was able to update all my machines successfully.  This looks more like a virus problem.  Have you run a virus scan recently?  Many times, if you are infected the virus will prevent you to access Windows Update.

You can also use Microsoft Fix It to reset the Windows Update components: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058.  This could also be your problem.
