  To do a fresh install (you lose files) try tapping / pressing the F11 key immediately after switching on the laptop to start the recovery partition on the hard drive to start over with a fresh factory settings. If it offers 'System restore' at any time, refuse and choose System Recovery.

  Since you set the password, you'd be the only person to get the password. There are actually many options built into Windows to help you out of this situation:

  • Restart the computer with your Windows repair CD, then use system restore to set Windows in a few days (only works if you have recently changed the password).
  • Log on to your account admin to spare, and then reset the password for your existing account (works only if you set up an alternative admin account).
  • Log in as administrator mode without failure, then reset the password for your existing account (the password is usually empty).
  • Insert your flash drive USB with the password key file (only works if you have taken the time to create such a key file).

  Reset the Microsoft connected account password

  HP recommends using a Microsoft account connected (MSA) to log Windows. With a Microsoft connected account, you log in to Windows using your email address and the password can be reset using a different device at any time.   No, the only way to recovery will involve your booting from the Windows installation disc * [this can be done on a 4 GB USB DRIVE, but you would need access to another PC to make].  The only other way would be to restore the factory settings

  If you have an existing 4 GB USB, you can save the files to somewhere else and then perform the recovery and then reformat the USB key to put your old files on it when you are finished.

  [* If you have an optical drive, you could do a disc repair system instead.]  If you know someone who has Windows 7 (32 bit, I guess that, in your case - it must be the same as yours) so that he could do a disk system repair & transfer it on a USB key which must only be 406MB or maybe a little less.  The instructions for this are also in the link below.]

  Sorry, but Microsoft prohibited information provided in these Forums for anyone who has problems with a lost or forgotten password.

  I suggest that you reinstall the operating system.

  If you don't have a recovery disk, contact Acer support and they may be able to provide a disk.

  Also check to see if when you upgraded from XP to vista, if you wiped the 'hidden' Acer recovery Partition to back to how it was when new.

  Do you it by pressing Alt + F10 at startup and follow the instructions to reinstall XP
