I have a Vista system and my cd/dvd device driver is corrupted or missing (Code 39).

How can I recharge the device driver? Whenever I have to uninstall the driver and the system tries to install the driver, I get the message that is damaged or missing.  How to solve this?

I tried deleting the cdrom.sys file in windows, but it won't let me even if I'm on the administrator account.

I also tried driver uninstall with the installed drive and rebooting, but the corrupted message driver happens every time that I reboot.

Is it possible that the drive itself is the problem?

I'm ready to get an external cd/dvd drive.
