I have no sound and my volume won't adjust. It is only on my account. Windows XP laptop. What should I do?

There are several accounts (4) on this laptop. My account is the only one who won't play the sound. I've checked everything. In the menu START, it won't let me touch the volume; This is setting the lowest. Sound card? I have no previous list, can I install Microsoft for free? I can hear the computer connect power and hear the pop ups, but no music, talk, videos, etc.

Given that yours is the only account with this problem, it is probably better considered as a corrupted profile.  Drivers are not the problem, as other users have no problem with the sound.  In the interest of recovery, deal with your current connection as a "corrupt profile" and follow the instructions in the following article.
