I lost my files when reinstalled vista.

I need to know why files got wiped out. Norton worked in my system and all of a sudden updates has been reinstalled windows vista. I lost my files...

I don't know why or how Vista has been reinstalled (you have a partition recovery with a keyboard command to access it, or did you have the recovery disc or the installation disc in the drive)?  If it occurred in a clean install (which is most likely), then the hard drive was wiped clean of everything (you probably have Norton or any of your other programs more either) and the recovery will be difficult and largely a matter of chance.  If it occurred as a repair/upgrade (which I do not see how it could happen) then the files and programs will still be there (even if perhaps not in the same place even though they should be another reason, I think that it was a facility clean return to the conditions of the factory).   Norton has been known to do strange things to the systems (I do not recommend one of their products - there are better alternatives, some of which are even free - poster back if you want some recommendations - it could happen), but this is the first time I've heard of him causing a re-installation of the operating system (but it is not beyond the realm of possibility - the update could have triggered the order of re-setup in a way (, or maybe you accidentally hit the order during the process).

There is no way to recover your programs or settings (unless you have a full image backup - that will recover your data as well), but there is a small chance for your data (or at least a part of it).  You have even a normal backup of your data available - which could save you here?

Here are some free recovery programs that might help (try recuva) but read the following before doing anything else on your PC.  The fact that you did so (including re - install the operating system) goes against what is successful-, but it's worth a try.

The files are not really deleted until they are crushed (although they are no longer available through conventional methods).  If you decide to try these recovery programs, you should stop using your drive hard immediately in order not to replace the data that you are trying to recover.  He slave on another PC and launch the recovery of this PC.  Even now you have definitely lost some of them if you use the same PC.  If you can not do this (slave on another PC), you run the risk of overwriting the data with every action you do on the PC (but you may still be able to recover some files - it's a matter of luck).

Only you can decide if the data is important enough to take the PC to an expert data recovery to recover files (they will have better programs and hardware to do that none of us do, and I've provided above).  Do NOT go to the Geek Squad or one of these centers of store-, they generally don't know what they are doing - it take for expert data recovery.  It will cost you a little and they offer generally no guarantees (meaning you pay full price no matter how much or how little they recover).  In the circumstances, I don't think that even they will be able to recover all or maybe not even most of it.  The decision is yours.

I'm sorry that what happened to you - it's very bad luck.  Subsequently, please keep a backup of your data to protect you from happening again (or any number of other issues that could lose your data).  Even better would be a full image backup that would preserve your system as it was when it was backed up (including programs, settings, data and all the rest).

Good luck and I hope this helps!

  • Cannot restore files after reinstalling Vista

My problem is that doubles 1. Everything I know about building and nothing about computers and 2. When I had trouble with my Word program, IE. It took 10 to 15 minutes to load, someone suggested that I reinstalled it to try to solve the problem. There can be no. Then, he suggested I have reinstall full vista I did. He asked if I wanted to back up my files, to which I answered Yes. It took several hours to install fuly and when I got home he had finished and almost nothing on the screen except a few editing base.  He had of course saved and everything saved on the hard drive somewhere, I had a friend TI to throw a glance and he was not at all familiar with it. But he had found and restored in a file named "bob."  But the big problem is that I can not open an any of them as file extensions are unknown. I really need to bring them especially my photos. My backup of records were destroyed in a fire of the site office and all the photos of my partner who died since in a car accident, were there. So close they are tempting, but cannot display. Hello jonowlbarn,

Thank you for using the Microsoft Windows Vista Forums.

Before you reinstalled Windows Vista didn't have you backed up your files? If so you back up your files on the same hard drive that Vista has been installed on?  If Yes, then performed reverse would be erased when you remove Vista.  I added some information below for that matter.  Please let us know status.  Thank you!

To make sure that you do not lose the files you create, edit and store on your computer, you must save the regularly. You can back up your files any time or manually configure automatic backups.

Note The ability to set up automatic backups is not included in Windows Vista Starter and Windows Vista Home Basic Edition.

    1.

Open the backup center and restore by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking system and Maintenance, and then click backup and Restore Center.

    2.

Click back up files, and follow the steps in the wizard. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

No backup files on the same hard disk that Windows is installed. For example, to make the back not files on a recovery partition. Always store media used for backups (external hard disks, DVDs, or CDs) in a safe place in order to prevent unauthorized access to your files; a separate fireproof place of your computer is recommended. You can also consider encrypting the data on your backup.

  • I have the product code on the back of my Acer Aspire 5100 but I lost the CD to reinstall Vista.

How to get Vista recovery Media and/or to use the Vista recovery Partition on your computer.

There is no Vista free download legal available.

Contact your computer manufacturer and ask them to send a recovery disk/s Vista set.

Normally, they do this for a cost of $ small.

In addition, ask them if you have a recovery Partition on your computer/laptop to restore it to factory settings.

See if a manual provided with the computer or go to the manufacturer's website, email or you can call for information on how to make a recovery.

Normally, you have to press F10 or F11 at startup to start the recovery process...
    Acer is Alt + F10

Another way I've seen on some models is press F8 and go to a list of startup options, and launch a recovery of standards of plant with it, by selecting the repair option.

You can also make recovery disk/s since the Partition of recovery in case of hard drive failure or System Crash, when you are in service again.

They will tell you how to do this.

Every computer manufacturer has their way of doing recovery disk/s.

Or borrow a good Microsoft Vista DVD (not Dell, HP, etc).
A good Vista DVD contains all versions of Vista.
The product key determines which version of Vista is installed.

There are 2 disks of Vista: one for 32-bit operating system, and one for 64-bit operating system.

If install a cleaning is required with a good DVD of Vista (not HP, Dell recovery disks):

Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.

At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu

  • Get an IRQL error when reinstalling Vista on a formatted HARD drive.

My (HP a1700n) office has been very slow, perhaps a virus. I ran Norton NIS and also had Norton disk utilities cleaner. Before that the Office stopped completely, I was able to shoot the important things (pictures, videos, etc) nothing else I could lose and wasted. I decided to start over and reinstall the Vista operating system, since I don't have the disk. Has gone so far as to choose the partition and after that he began to «analyze...» "it froze and gave me some kind of error that the partition not could not be found or something like that, well I deleted the partition with the recovery partition since I created a disc a new partition using all the available space, but now I get the not_les_than_ error message. I only go as far as to choose the partion and starts to analyze then the BSOD appears. I did not add anything other than a 1 GB of ram and I removed it, so now the computer only has the 1 GB it is came with, everything else is what came with when I bought it 2 years ago. I don't know if it's hardware related or I'm doing something wrong.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Reinstalled Vista on my Gateway computer. There are 2 users, how to find the files saved by Windows before reinstalling?

My C drive was blue screens so that I couldn't get into my computer and it became useless. I'm a total computer not so smart person, (politically correct too) :) In any case, after finding how to get in safe mode and fishing around a solution, I got the solution from scratch. It was April, which should give you an idea how well informed, I am when it comes to such things.

So I took the option that would save all user files before reinstaling the operating system which is original bought the 2008 version. Vista 32-bit. Yes I know it's old but it works again. So since then I tried to get it updated and secure. Gateway won't help me at all, of course, out of warranty and all. So I downloaded the service Pack 1 and 2 for vista and all the security updates and Microsoft security essentials and IE9. So now I'm finally back to normal, which I think is a relative term.

So now, I want to find all the files of the user who have been registered by windows before the reinstall took place. My folders and files from my sister. Treatment of text and pictures and stuff.

Once I found how to make their return to where I am and where it is?

    You are welcome.

Unfortunately, you have not yet told how you have saved the files.

If you used the Auromatic backup gateway, they say that the files are in the C:\Backup folder on the hard drive.

You will need to open that folder and either copy and paste or drag and drop them where you want them to be.

It's a question you'd have to ask Gateway:

If you have an installation clean back to factory settings, you normally wiped your hard drive clean during the process.

    You can try this program:

    http://www.SnapFiles.com/get/Recuva.html

Recuva is a file undeletion tool that allows you to analyze your hard drives or media cards for files that have been deleted or formatted. It presents you a list of files that have been found, as well as an assessment of their potential for recovery, a preview option, and a hex viewer to inspect the content. You can limit your search to files of a certain type (e.g. images, audio etc.) and choose between a quick and a thorough analysis approach. The program also includes a secure deletion option that allows you to permanently delete files that were found while parsing, to avoid any future recoveries.
