I need to restore a previously saved version of a file system windows movie maker
I accidentally saved an empty file on a Movie Maker project that I worked on for many hours of many many. How to restore the earlier version of the file?
I have Windows Vista Home Premium and have therefore no shadow copies.
I tried to click with the right button on the file and the file to restore, but he came upward in option.
Help! (Thank you)
Hi DCKeyser,
Since then, family vista premium does not shadow copies, you might not be able to restore the previous version of the file.
You can use your favorite search engine to search for third-party programs retrieve older files.

Does anyone have any suggestions? It keeps giving me an arror code saying something codec. What shoul I do... help
Hi napoleonfoo,
Did you follow the steps provided by John Inzer?
To better understand the issue, we need the following information:
(a) what is the exact error that you receive when you import video into windows movie maker?
(b) what is the file format of the video you are trying to import?
(c) means the video sharing with each drive that you use or simply with a particular player?
To clarify, you try to install a program (or download the program)? What program are you trying to install? You get a specific error message?
See the link below for the file format supported.
Import video, images and audio in Windows Movie Maker
You can search online for the codec or convert the file into a format that windows movie maker can understand.
Note: Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the use of third-party software can be solved. Software using third party is at your own risk.

Windows Movie Maker project disappeared, need help!
I was recently working on the 3rd video of the year for my daughter using Windows Movie Maker. I worked on it for a few months now. I save every 10 minutes or more. I was almost finished and clicked on save, and I got a popup that I was 'Out of Memory' that happens from time to time. Then I tried to save it under a different name, and then I got a new popup that says "unknown error." I decided to close Windows Movie Maker, and then restart the computer. I then noticed that the icon/file for my project was no longer visible. I checked the trash and he wasn't there. I did many searches for it on my computer with the file name and the file extension, nothing and also restored my computer to a few days earlier and the project file does not re - appeared. Windows Movie Maker (version 2.1) does not open my .mswmm project.
The WMM gives the error message "stopping" whenever I try to open this project. I have Windows XP. My project was started about 18 months ago, and I believe that WMM has been automatically updated since then. I thought that an older project could be opened in a new version of WMM, although a more recent project could not be opened in a previous version. I'd really like to reopen this project in order to complete and save, because I spent a lot of time to compile. Would appreciate any help that can be given. Thank you
Hi ElisabethLee,
1. did you of recent changes on the computer?
2. are you able to create and save a new project using Windows movie maker files?
3. do you have security software installed on the computer?
Method 1
Windows Movie Maker in Windows XP uses video and audio filters when you import, preview and record movies.
I suggest that you turn off the video and audio filters in Windows movie maker and check if it works.
To change the video filter settings
(a) click on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the compatibility tab.
(b) in the list of video filters, you can enable or disable a filter by selecting or clearing the check box.
Change the video filter settings
http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-XP/help/MovieMaker/change-video-filter-settings
Method 2
It is possible that some third-party programs installed on the computer is causing the problem.
I suggest that you put the computer in a clean boot state and check if it helps.
To help resolve the error and other messages, you can start Windows XP by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This type of boot is known as a "clean boot". A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.
See the link below to learn more about how to clean boot.
How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" State
http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/310353
Reset the computer to start as usual
When you are finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:
(a) click Start, type msconfig in the search box and press ENTER.
(b) If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password or click on continue.
(c) under the general tab, click the Normal startup option, and then click OK.
(d) when you are prompted to restart the computer, click on restart.

Saving audio settings of Windows Movie Maker in the film project file
I understand how to adjust the volume of my audio track, but when I save the file, in the sound adjustments are not saved. Is there an extra step in the audio recording?
Hi Gmamma,
Try the two methods mentioned below if you don't him have not yet tried and check if it works.
Method 1
The audio settings by default in Windows Movie Maker is for the audio portion of imported video and any narration or music that you add to play at an equal level, but you can change that setting if it does not give you the balance that you want. To adjust the audio levels, follow these steps:
(a) click Tools, and then click Audio levels.
(b) do one of the following:
to increase the level of audio on the Audio track that is part of a video clip, drag the slider toward Audio from video.
II. to increase the level of audio that is located on the audio / music, drag the slider to Audio / Music.
(c) click on close.
Method 2
Adjust the volume of each audio clip individually, as follows:
1. on the track Audio or Audio / Music of the timeline, select the audio clip that you want to adjust the volume.
2. click on Clip, point to Audio, and then click Volume.
3. to adjust the volume, do one of the following:
· To reduce the volume, drag the Audio volume level slider to the left.
· To increase the volume, drag the Audio volume level slider to the right.
· To cut the video, select the Mute clip check box.
· To restore the volume to the original volume, click reset.

Windows Movie Maker - savings-older version
HI - my daughter received a project to make a band trailer of the movie using Windows Movie Maker. We have 6 Version, no problem. But the school has V2.1.4026.0 with a Spk2 V5.1.
The teacher said that we have to save the project, so it can be read by an earlier version of the software. I went to the save option under and the "Save as type" gives only the option "Save as Windows Movie maker Project. I'm sure it's a simple solution, but since this is our first experience with this package I need help.
So, how to save a Version6 project file so it can be read by older Versions of Windows Movie Maker?
Anyone?Hi Harleysfran,
Thank you for using the Microsoft Windows Vista Forums.
Project files more Movie Maker version are not compatible with the lower version of Movie Maker. However, you can publish the project to .avi or .wmv format so that you can play these video files on any computer.
But you cannot change the published video file.
