  I made a few changes to a virtual machine configuration that basically he has stopped working (the operating system not the virtual machine itself). I used time machine to restore a virtual machine and it worked.

Also, I found two different ways to move information from one mac to another, one way being using the migration wizard, the other via the time machine. The problem is that I've never used time machine (I checked my settings and it is turned off). I was curious to know which option would be the 'best' way and if not never back up my computer would be a problem. (If its possible, could someone also please explain how to back up my computer?)

  I use Time Machine often (and have used since its introduction).  I also upgraded my Mac hardware quite often (about every 18 months).  Whenever I move to a new machine, I use the Migration Wizard (and not Time Machine).  I've never had a problem.

  Then I suggest that you need not Time machine specifically in order to change computers.  However, you really need to keep backups simply because the material is not, and without a backup, you are subject to lose everything you have on your computer.

  Should I buy a Base Station for my Apple products? I have a Netgear CG3000D-RG gateway and also use Windows with this modem/router. I'm not able to backup using time machine and bought an external hard drive PassPort but I find it pretty annoying having to plug it in to my MBP whenever I want to do a backup. I would like to use the most convenient airport on my MBP feature, however, it seems pointless unless I have connected to my Netgear router/Modem base station. If I have to buy a base station to make the backup of my MBP easier? I also use 6s and iPad Air iPhone. I would be able to save these features too? Thank you!

  It would really help if you could provide the version of the operating system that you use on your laptop.

  The reason is that if you can access the AirPort Extreme using AirPort Utility, you can retrieve the "lost password" for the album Time Capsule, which could be the password wireless, could be the base station password, or it might be the disk password... it depends of how you implement the AirPort Extreme.
