  Before windows updates, follow these methods.

  Method 1: Put the computer in a clean boot state before proceed with the installation of update to see if there are any software conflict as the clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

  I have Windows XP Home Edition, the internet connection switched through Earthlink and McAfee antivirus.  In August, my antivirus software and when I tried to access the internet, the computer locked up--had to disconnect/reconnect to restart. McAfee can tell me nothing.  At the suggestion of Dell, I replaced the hard drive.  Reinstalled Windows mfg disk and could connect to the internet just fine w/out of antivirus software.  Installed McAfee and locked up again.  McAfee is baffled by this, as is Earthlink.  When I tried the Earthlink software, I received the following message before the computer locked: RAS error Interactive Mode #703. EarthLink told me that there is a "Windows problem in common.  If anyone can help?
