  It is a digression of your technical question, but you haven't purchased two separate subscriptions for creative cloud? You are probably aware of this, but just in case you're not, a single Plan of creative photography cloud allows installation and activation on two computers. These computers can be two Macs, two windows, or one of each. See Adobe Creative Cloud FAQ for more information. Of course, you can have another reason to buy multiple subscriptions, but I wanted to clarify in case you can save yourself a little money.

  not a stupid question and the answer is no, there is no need to install lr4 to install your upgrade of lr 5.

  When you enter your lr serial number 5, he will be known as a serial number upgrade.  the installer will check your computer for lr 4.  After failing to find it, you will be asked your lr serial number 4.  Enter and you should be good.
