  You can download the installer for OS X directly from Oracle. Be sure to uncheck everything installs 'optional' which can appear at the beginning (I think on Windows it wants to install McAfee trial or the toolbar Bing - not really malware, more as desired and useless crud-ware).  I have a course Java JRE install on my MacBook Pro retina like some internal tools we have developed to work are currently java and I use a tool of u.   Hello mjg263, firefox 13 introduced a scroll smoothly by default - it might not work well on older hardware.

  Please, try to update your video driver or if this does not improve the case you can disable scrolling smoothly in firefox/tools > options > advanced > general.

I visited the official site of firefox and searching for addons, when I tried to install addons, Firefox crashed. Therefore, it has becomes quite slow and cannot restore previous sessions.   Once you have done so, you could try the Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe mode is a troubleshooting mode that disables certain parameters, disables most Add-ons (extensions and themes).

• iMac very slow and short HOT.  the fan runs almost constantly

  My iMac 2011 short middle slow and often gets "the ball" of the computer runs hot (uncomfortable keep the hand on top) and the fan is almost always running.  Activity monitor shows the low CPU usage. Any ideas?

  Start in Safe Mode , and then repair your hard disk and permissions:

  For disk utility can't handle situations, the best third party is Disk Warriorutility;  Fixed DW only for problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by the corruption of directory; Warrior drive 4.x is now compatible with Intel Mac.

  OS X automatically defrags files smaller than 20 MB in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files it little need to defragment the hard drive.

  Under no circumstances should you install operating MacPaw or ZeoBit software (CleanMyMac/CleanMyDrive or Mac Keeper, respectively.) You don't need special software to keep your computer.

  Troubleshooting Applications

  You can also get an external drive at least equal to the size hard disk internal and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the disk utility's restore option. You can also create and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (the order is not significant):

  5. Synk Pro

  6. Tri-Backup

  Additional tips

  Make sure you have a sufficient amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run simultaneously. Make sure to leave a minimum of 10% of the capacity of the hard disk as free space.

  Add more RAM. If your computer less than 2 GB of RAM and you use OS X Leopard or later, then you can do it with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion works much better with 4 GB of RAM that is their system. Most concurrent applications, that you tend to use the more RAM you should have.

  Always have at least 15 GB, or 10% of the capacity of your hard disk as free space, the largest. OS X frequently accesses your hard disk, so offering enough free space will keep things slow down.

  Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:

  Before Mavericks

  Open the activity monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select all processes in the drop process .  Click the % CPU column heading twice to display in descending order.  If find you a process that uses a large amount of time processor (> = 70,) then select the process, and then click the quit icon in the toolbar.  Click the force quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Don't forget to mention the name of the runaway process, so you can find the cause of the problem.

  Mavericks and later versions

  The three files that does not loaded at startup proved a Paragon backup facility that I had deleted.  I found in the registry and is more had this error.

  Slow and sudden episodes of "not responding" continues in safe mode, safe mode with network and boot.

  Mr. Fixit noted that I had too many programs loaded on startup that I already knew and will work hard to stop.  It has been useful in this gave me a list of the programs that did not need to start.  Some of this list was a distant base such that suggests my AV does not need to start, but some of it was useful.

  I then started to keep track of programs that seemed more likely to slow down or freeze the machine.  I reduced to one of my drives 3 1/2 inch WD 7200 and my 25 M Intel SSD.

  I ran Intel SSD toolbox and it showed no errors and no updates.  Estimated of life was about 95% and I had the car for 2 years.  There is an option to click that says "SSD Optimizer", and I suspect it is similar to a manual pad because it is one of their first records.  I "optimized" and it was immediately faster.  Intel said to do once a week or two and I never did.

  I ran HD Tune Pro on the WD and it showed a bad CRC so that a warning on the drive, which is less than a year. HD air said the drive is bad OR a cable is bad.  I had a backup, Acronis Disk which took most of the data and I also had the cloud with versioning backup.

  Knowing that the food had been replaced by a technician who had twisted power cables, because most of the readers had been asked in reverse, I attacked this first.  I turned every drive so that the connection of the power supply has been on the same side and reconnect the cable after doing my best to straighten out and flatten the wire.  I then installed a new SATA cable on the WD drive in question.

  Then, wanting to be done with it once and for all and ensuring that I could save between Acronis and my backup of cloud, I used the command line in Administrator, then to Drive E tools mode, error checking.  I ticked the boxes: analyze and attempt to recover bad sectors and automatically fix file system errors.  A reboot and the process had started.

  When you are finished, I seemed to have a catchy machine and some of the programs which often hung, is done in two days.  Programs were pretty much intact, but most of the files had been erased from the disk.  I have restored all wiped files and files of Acronis and the cloud and everything seems to work perfectly.

  Unable to help me, I ran HD Tune Pro and made a mistake (not fast) full scan on the E drive.  She came back without error.

  I know that this drive can fail again, and above all, I couldn't have been this aggressive if I had not had 2 backups.

  Do you think it will fail again?  I decided that, if so, I'll get another SSD (or two) to replace.  Although it will cost you much, I fear that hard drives are not very well made and I don't want to go through this again - and maybe not be so lucky.

  Thanks for your help and I'll post again if it fails in the near future.  Someone knows something about the new SSD Plextor?  Or would you go with Samsung?

  1. as if the title has not made clear enough, my laptop runs very slowly. Let me describe how SLOW is. I start up my laptop and open my utorrent then I'll check my disk usage in the Task Manager, it shows 100%. Don't tell me Defrag, adjust my virtual memory, disable superfetch and microsoft service because I did all this and nothing changes. Well actually it changed for some time, but whenever I open utorrent as soon as I turn on my laptop, the disk usage percentage increased up to 100%.   The Windows XP Task Manager lists the processes running. It will list the plugin - container.exe but I don't think it goes further. IIRC a Sysinternals utility was required to get information on the processes associated with the plugincontainer.

• Satellite L550 slow and BSOD

  Have a L550 i5 / 4 gr 500HDD / Ati radeon Pre / running 7 Pro 32 bit with Kaspersky Pure as the ISS.
  This machine is only 8 months old and already I had several probs with it namely slow and BSOD.

  Dealers (Toshy trained technicians) don't find anything wrong with her and now after 4 days of home had several probs still especially slowdown, pop ups that won't come off with tab turns, email windows etc. ad nauseam.

  Short of reformat and reinstall a backup - not acted at a 7 disc I don't know if I'm going to pot or there is something very wrong with this lappy.

  Any ideas on how I can check it out that dealers are just charge me money for basically nothing and am thinking that I should just go and get another brand because it's the second Toshy I had had so much trouble.

  Don't download a lot of freeware just MBAM and CCleaner, and is for the game.
