Improve performance with an external SSD thuderbolt

Hi all.

I have a performance problem with my Photoshop and I'd like to get some kind of help. Currently I have a 27 "iMac i7 3, 5 GHz, 16 GB of Ram and 3 TB HD... However, working with large files photoshop performance is not really good. I have tried many things and recommendations already, but the performance is always the same.

However, I read on the Internet that obtaining external lightning THAT SSD could not understand the problem (the option to purchase an internal SSD is completely ignored.). The idea is to buy one of this external thundebold SSD (about 300) and import the images that I work with in this disc. When I finished my editing process I could move all files to my internal drive to 3 TB of storage overhead in order to have here all the files (PSD, RAW and JPG). If I need to edit again a TIF I could bring it back to the SSD, work there, finish the process and move again to the 3 to HD.

What do you think of this idea?

Thanks in advance for your help and sorry for my English level if a lot of mistakes were made.

Assign multiple disks scratch from the same real disk will have a detrimental effect on performance. For an SSD, it is neutral. Basically, very large volumes of data must be moved to and from the "scratch disks". You get better performance with

* more fast disks

separate disks

So, don't assume don't you stop using the internal disk for scratch! All of the two disks is better than one, probably.

No, it makes no difference where Photoshop is installed either. Dwelling on an issue key, setting workspace. I gave a very simple view, others may have different views. But the bottom line is that adding a new drive is not going to help unless it is used for this purpose.

"Do you think I have my problem to my internal HDD fault? I think that Yes... »

Well, we do not know. For example, you can monitor disk and CPU to see who is at its maximum? If you do not know, you could be throwing money on the problem of evil. But certainly, those who want high performance buy discs specifically to use as scratch - many of them.

  • Improve performance with caching

I would try to improve the speed of my applications and caching of one of the things I look at.
I would like someone to confirm that my thinking is correct or give advice, if not.

Page and the caching of the region should be used on pages where the data are static or rarely changes.
For example my homepage, which comes from some parts of the html and lists, would be a contender.
A page that contains a report that contains parameters, would not be a competitor.

Authorisation schemes should be cached once per session

    Am I wrong?

  • How can I best configure files with external SSD?

    Hello

I want to install an external SSD as boot on an iMac of 2012 drive, but I don't have enough space for all my files and documents.

I plan on backup and by installation tasks and using the migration wizard to change apps and accounts internal users through the SSD from the HARD drive.

The main question is my videos, pictures (including the photo library) and iMovie projects (and associated files), so I was planning on uncheck the video files and images in the for the corresponding user accounts migration wizard.

    My questions are:

    1. This sounds like a reasonable plan?

    2. what happens to the folders/files I leave on the drive HARD internal and how I "reconnect" them with the OS on the SSD? *

    * i.e. is there a new folder of videos or photos on the SSD and in the Finder, or Mac would automatically know they were still on the internal drive?

My current computer is a Mac Book Pro with 500 GB SSD + another standard 1 TB drive and I use the SSD for the system and applications and moved over all the rest on the classic drive. My plan was to do the same thing with the new machine with an external 2 TB drive Thunderbolt.

You have made the right choice. 1 TB flash storage is much faster than a disc fusion.

  • Need help with problems of performance with 14 elements

I scanned the forums and provided below to help with feedback. At this point, the organizer of the elements is unusable for me - I'm looking for suggestions to help refine the installer to make it usable.

    MY SETUP

    • Just more than 50000 items in the catalog, about 95% of them are photos, videos of rest. 98% of the source files are on a drive to the server in my house, with a gigabit connection.
    • I left full recognition of faces (took two days!) and Yes, during that who was running the organizer was unusable.
    • My PC is an i7 - 4790 k with 16 GB of RAM. Windows Pro 10. Boot drive is SSD.

    THE SCENARIO

I have a new series of images on my C drive local - images that I scanned, about 30 pictures. Using the view of the pane left records that I navigate to the folder on my C drive. If I move to the tab places it takes about 25 seconds to react and make enforcement appear the places page. If I then go to the people tab it takes about 75 seconds, for the application to respond. In both cases, the application is completely insensitive during the wait.

Clearly, I can't clean my collection with this kind of response. So here are my questions:

    1. What are the key strategies to improve performance, given my configuration?
    2. Have I not too many objects in the catalog? Should I aim lower number? I saw that there is no actual limit but I feel Im beyond a theoretical limit of messages.
    3. Broken content is to catalog help with questions like this? Is there another internal setting, I should be updated or change?
    4. Given the number of images should I use Lightroom instead?

The only change that I'm not going to do is to move all the content of my return to my local drive. Sound on the server so that it is completely backed up and protected. So I'm looking for ideas that help given this configuration.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

    Mark

    Mark,

I can't offer a positive solution to your problem, but I hope to give you some answers or thoughts on this subject.

Let's start with the description of your case: it's a perfect description of what has been reported in several positions:

    -powerful Installer (computer, SSD)

-l' use of the recognition of people and/or geolocation

-use of a NAS for the library.

-Library of more than 50,000 points.

-very long indexing, then extremely slow.

I do not use a SSD (will probably later) or a NAS (I never do). I 65 000 objects and don't care about recognition of face or geolocation, which explains that with a basic setup on I3, 8 GB of RAM, I have an organizing extremely fast speed. Even on an old secondary computer with Vista, it is still quite manageable.

Your choice is typical of advanced specialists and competent (I guess that less than 1% of the current user of items based). I have yet to see no answer (satisfactory or not...) Adobe staff.

Given the number of images should I use Lightroom instead?

I guess that's what Adobe could answer you... and that would be wise. You can use a trial version to make your choice and do a search on the forum for Lightroom. I have not seen similar, even if complaints with NASs, it seems to be a lot to say. Lightroom can convert your organizing catalogs (maybe some problems lately...)

The only change that I'm not going to do is to move all the content of my return to my local drive. Sound on the server so that it is completely backed up and protected. So I'm looking for ideas that help given this configuration.

If the use of the network is primarily to ensure maximum security (for not sharing images), why not would you use the choice to store your library on your computer (internal or external disk) with a sync to your NAS as a backup solution? I can tell you that my workflow includes Windows Synctoy to record each session easily and quickly (catalogs and libraries).

Your very precise description of the case call to assess each factor of different performance individually. Even if the method above is not the final answer, it could shed light on the influence of the use of the network.

    1. Have I not too many objects in the catalog? Should I aim lower number? I saw that there is no actual limit but I feel Im beyond a theoretical limit of messages.
    2. Broken content is to catalog help with questions like this?

Splitting the catalog is usually a very bad solution, a number of post seems to show that with the recognition of the people/geotagging, the problems around the range of 50,000 points. You can make a copy of the catalog and remove half of the files to check the influence of numbers point; Maybe it's possible with version 14 (deletion is extremely slow, but worked for me, even if it failed with older versions).

Is there another internal setting, I should be updated or change?

Sorry, I can't help you there...

Other factors are using recognition Geotagging and people. Even if you absolutely need those features, disable to see their influence could help Adobe to solve performance issues.

  • Lightroom Catalog and preview files on the external SSD using Thunderbolt?

I own an iMac 21 with a regular construction in the hard drive. The RAW files, back ups are on external hard drives.

It would make sense (speed wise) to put my catalog on an external SSD connected via thunderbolt?

My catalog is about 1, 7 GB of big, with glimpses lightroom now use about 40 GB.

I think to an SSD 128 GB dedicated to lightroom.

Would it be a good idea? Or simply be money down the drain?

    Any comments would be welcome.

Read and write in the catalog will be faster than things like scroll thumbnails and switching modules. Glimpses of the building, etc. see very little improvement. This test should give you an idea where things will be better http://www.computer-darkroom.com/blog/will-an-ssd-improve-adobe-lightroom-performance/

  • kernel_task runaway (from 300 to 600%) CPU with 2 external displays

I have a MacBook Pro (retina, mid-2012), and for a year and a half, I've had episodes fighter during the kernel_task suddenly begin to consume all processor CPU (from 300 to 600%), is the response of the system so slow it is impossible to use.  I experience these episodes throughout the front 1-2 years that the machine went from Yosemite El Capitan and now Sierra.

Normally, I use my MacBook with two external displays, both at work and at home.  At work, I have two external screens of Lenovo, and at home, I have two screens Apple (Apple Cinema Display 27-inch and 27-inch Apple Thunderbolt Display). I discovered that this kernel_task high CPU usage can only be stopped by disconnecting one of the external screens.  After unplugging an external display, the kernel_task subsides immediately to normal (< 5%).  After a few minutes, I can reconnect the 2nd external screen and proceed normally (sometimes for days, sometimes for hours, sometimes for a few minutes) until the kernel_task pulls up to 300-600% again.  The use of the high CPU kernel_task never happens unless I have two external displays connected.

Note that since I upgraded to MacOS Sierra fugue kernel_task CPU frequency has increased considerably: of 1 kernel_task runaway every several days to a runaway almost every 10 minutes or so.   I don't have a reason this frequency has increased, but the runaway condition seems to have worsened by the fact that the photoanalysisd daemon is running like crazy on my grand (72 000) library of Photos.

Also note that I started in recovery mode and have re-installed MacOS Sierra, and it has no effect on the runaway kernel_task.

Any ideas on how to fix this resumption of kernel_task of all my CPU?

I have attached my EtreCheck system report below.  This report was captured with two attached external displays.  At halfway while generating a report, the kicks and started kernel_task hogging CPU again.

  • Installation of the HP envy j067cl with own OS ssd

    Hi all

yesterday, I bought a new HP touchsmart j067cl want that came with windows pre-installed 8 64-bit. My specs are:

    1. I7 cpu 4700qm
    2. 8 GB ddr3 1600 Mhz ram
    3. 750HDD
    4. Intel GPU HD 4600

My first priority is the speed, that is why I bought this model so I want to install a new ssd to improve performance. I bought a prime ADATA Pro SP900 120 Gb SSD Sata3.I haven't touched my HARD disk. I want to ask 2 thing I just can't understand.

    (1) I want to install my ssd and perform a new installation of windows 8 and then update to 8.1 via the free update of the store. Where can I find a 8 iso windows Geniue/compatile file to PERFORM the installation of airconditioning on my ssd? I have been informed that the windows recovery disk/flash drive does not work because with this upgrade (SSD), the ability to change my hard disk and the process gives an error (750 GB are greater than 120 on my ssd). Then please explain to me. There must be a way. What happens if my HARD drive crashes and I need a new? Same scenario.
P.S.: I also accept cloning methods if they are 100% working so that I can migratemy my SSD HARD drive.

    (2) I need to have drivers for Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit I have already, in which case I want to downgrade. Where can I find? On the HP Web site are not available. I've seen on other posts here that we can ask and HP provide here links woth all required drivres. So please help me.

Thanks in advance for your time and help.

    Hello:

It is a consumer to consumer support forum.

No HP will answer all your questions on behalf of the company.

HP employees who respond do as consumers in their free time.

You can use all the W7 x 64 drivers and software for this model.

    http://h10025.www1.HP.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?OS=4063&LC=en&cc=us&DLC=en&sw_lang=&product=6521374

You can try the recovery media that you do on an ssd, but most likely it will not work as you have indicated, because the ssd will be probably smaller in size.

This W8 OEM ISO file will work on a product for US, key computers.  I don't know if it will work on all the others.

The fastest and most effective will be a PCIe SSD installed in an enclosed.  Understand that serves as an external SSD, speed may be limited by the connection in use and you can not achieve the performance that the SSD is capable of.  The fastest connection to date is Thunderbolt2, which may or may not be fast enough (I just don't know).

    You can get these here:

    Ciao.

  • Run Windows 10 from an external SSD drive? Yes, it works!

That's what I did to make it work. The whole process takes about 45 minutes, but I think that it really is worth it if you want to run quick and clean Windows 10 on your iMac.

    What you need:

    • An SSD external - data is deleted
    • An iMac 27 "(end of 2013 in my case)

Temporarily, for the installation, you will also need:

    • A computer with Windows 7, 8 or 10 to copy the correct files on the SSD drive and make it bootable
    • A computer running with OS X download BootCamp
    • A USB - data is erased

First, in Windows, you get a file ISO for Windows 10. You can use the media to https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 authoring tool and choose to save it as ISO file (do not create a USB bootable media).

    1. Double-click on the. ISO file. This will mount the disk to install on a disk (in my case, the letter E).
    2. Connect the SSD drive to a free USB port
    3. Open an administrator command prompt and type:
      1. DiskPart
      2. list disk (to identify your external SSD drive number)
      3. select disk 2 (or another number to your external SSD drive, make sure you do not erase your internal drive, usually on 0).
      4. clean - be careful, if you have selected the wrong disc, erase all the data on it
      5. create part pri
      6. Quick format
      7. assign letter = O (or another letter if already used)
      8. assets
      9. output
      10. DISM/apply-image /imagefile:"E:\sources\install.esd" / index: 1 /ApplyDir:Y:------(change E to another letter for the ISO file mounted)
      11. BCDBOOT. EXE Y:\WINDOWS/s Y:/f BIOS (so that the boot in the BIOS only drive (not EFI))
      12. output
      13. Eject all disks properly or simply shut down your PC.

Then on your Mac, open the wizard BootCamp (click on Launchpad and type "bootcamp" to find) and check ONLY "download the latest software of Apple's Windows support. Save it on your USB thumb drive. Stop your iMac. Remove the USB key and keep it in your hand.

Turn on your iMac by pressing the option (alt) key. You will see an orange icon with Windows. Select this option and wait until you see 'Getting ready devices', wait a little longer until you hear the startup chime and press the option (alt) key to make sure that start you on the external hard drive. That's all!

Now you have a copy of Windows from your external USB drive. You just need to install the BootCamp drivers on your USB (\Bootcamp\Setup.exe). Reset.

Oh, you have 10 Windows running natively on your beautiful iMac.

    Enjoy!

The answer is in the response. I don't know how to post a tip!

  • External SSD hard drive not detected by Airport Extreme/Time Capsule

Hello everyone, I have the following problem:

    Framework

-J' bought a 1 TB Samsung SSD 840 EVO internal media.

-He is locked in a case of badges and used as an external hard drive

-J' have an Airport Extreme (5th generation)

    -J' have a Time Capsule (4th Gen)

-My MBP detects the SSD external hard drive when it is connected to the USB port and works fine

    Problem

-I connect the external SSD hard drive to the USB port on both TCapsule and AExtreme, but the HD is not detected directly (USD and with powered hub of USD)

-HD was formatted as OS x journaled Extended

-J' tried smb and cifs via 'connect to server', but does not work.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Juan

Unfortuantely, Apple did not update the firmware on the USB key (it is still 2.0) port on their routers for a number of years.  As a result, new USB 3.0 drives may or may not work with airports.

Yes, we know that USB 3.0 is supposed to be backward compatible with USB 2.0 in theory, but theory does not always work in practice.

If your drive is formatted as Mac OS extended (journaled)... also called HFS +... .and you have tried the drive with and without a USB hub powered and the reader will not be displayed with you check using the AirPort Utility disks tab... then you have one of a number of readers who do not work with routers from the airport.

I just checked a new LaCie USB 3.0 drive I have here. It works perfectly with a Mac, but it appears not at all when I connect it to the USB port or a powered new AirPort Extreme or new Time Capsule directly, or by using a USB hub.

  • 10.11.3 - cannot start iMac with monitor external thunderbolt

Updated 10.11.3 yesterday evening.  New problem I've ever seen.

iMac (late 2015 version, with 27 "screen Retina 5 K, Core I6, SSD, Radeon R9, 16 GB of memory).

connects via a thunderbolt cable to

Apple 27 "monitor Thunderbolt, model A1407

(so I see two screens 27 ", side by side)

System does not boot under 10.11.3.

Boot process goes through the white Apple, then the line under the Apple gets almost half way through

At that time, an arrow cursor appears on the screen of your iMac.

A second more later, arrow cursor appears on the screen external thunderbolt.

And then the system hangs.  Nothing changes.

However, if I physically pull the Thunderbolt, the iMac starts correctly.  The boot process works as it should.

In this case, * after * I connect, I can connect the thunderbolt and the external monitor works properly.

However, if the system is then reset, either by choosing the restart, or due to a failure, then the boot process hangs.

    I have:

    (1) used Safe Boot (shift - restart).

The two screens can be mounted properly.  A lot of horizontal scroll around (to test screens?); Subsequently, the system works correctly.

However, after starting secure, I try to restart normally with the external screen, the boot process hangs again.

    (2) reset the NVRAM.  No effect.

    (3) reset SMC, controller of system management (by removing power for 30 seconds).  No effect.

    Suggestions?  Ideas?

    Hey there buddy.

I'm with you on this one...
Exactly the same problem I am experiencing and before anyone posts macro stuff that we all read, I'm just saying I'm sure that 90% of us have already made the NVRAM reset, reset the SCM and so on...

My MacBook Pro works perfectly one day and the next day I get this * updated... external monitor no longer works with my HDMI.

I'm sure that some of the support will suggest for us to watch a few pages "Troubleshooting" and suggests that our cables are broken or our monitors surprisingly stopped working after this magic update...

Another favorite of mine suggestion is for us to go there and buy the cable HDMI $99 is made by apple...

I'm * offshore, that an update can cause so much hassle and worst of all, wasting my time by reading more than a dozen pages of dumb suggestions...

@APPLE, you will find the * bugs and solve this problem, it is simply unacceptable. An update of shit limits my use of the laptop... What's next?
