OS with Bootcamp on external SSD

Hello world

I intend to move Mac OS (El Capital) to crush an external SSD. Is that possible to move/fresh install windows on this external SSD too?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, using tools of cloning as Winclone.

  • How can I best configure files with external SSD?

    Hello

I want to install an external SSD as boot on an iMac of 2012 drive, but I don't have enough space for all my files and documents.

I plan on backup and by installation tasks and using the migration wizard to change apps and accounts internal users through the SSD from the HARD drive.

The main question is my videos, pictures (including the photo library) and iMovie projects (and associated files), so I was planning on uncheck the video files and images in the for the corresponding user accounts migration wizard.

    My questions are:

    1. This sounds like a reasonable plan?

    2. what happens to the folders/files I leave on the drive HARD internal and how I "reconnect" them with the OS on the SSD? *

    * i.e. is there a new folder of videos or photos on the SSD and in the Finder, or Mac would automatically know they were still on the internal drive?

    Thank you

  • Windows with Bootcamp on iMac with only SSD HD?

I would like to run Windows with Bootcamp on my iMac. Retina iMac late 2014 with no internal hard drive, only the SSD and the 10.11.4. After countless tests, I dropped; I ask the community, is - it possible at all?

Yes, but your post is so incomplete, you did not provide details of what errors you got. Chances are you have too small a SSD and simply do not have enough space.

Finally, I ask the moderator to move this thread on the forum of Boot Camp. This is an iMac general forum where most users use only OS X.

  • Run Windows 10 from an external SSD drive? Yes, it works!

That's what I did to make it work. The whole process takes about 45 minutes, but I think that it really is worth it if you want to run quick and clean Windows 10 on your iMac.

    What you need:

    • An SSD external - data is deleted
    • An iMac 27 "(end of 2013 in my case)

Temporarily, for the installation, you will also need:

    • A computer with Windows 7, 8 or 10 to copy the correct files on the SSD drive and make it bootable
    • A computer running with OS X download BootCamp
    • A USB - data is erased

First, in Windows, you get a file ISO for Windows 10. You can use the media to https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 authoring tool and choose to save it as ISO file (do not create a USB bootable media).

    1. Double-click on the. ISO file. This will mount the disk to install on a disk (in my case, the letter E).
    2. Connect the SSD drive to a free USB port
    3. Open an administrator command prompt and type:
      1. DiskPart
      2. list disk (to identify your external SSD drive number)
      3. select disk 2 (or another number to your external SSD drive, make sure you do not erase your internal drive, usually on 0).
      4. clean - be careful, if you have selected the wrong disc, erase all the data on it
      5. create part pri
      6. Quick format
      7. assign letter = O (or another letter if already used)
      8. assets
      9. output
      10. DISM/apply-image /imagefile:"E:\sources\install.esd" / index: 1 /ApplyDir:Y:------(change E to another letter for the ISO file mounted)
      11. BCDBOOT. EXE Y:\WINDOWS/s Y:/f BIOS (so that the boot in the BIOS only drive (not EFI))
      12. output
      13. Eject all disks properly or simply shut down your PC.

Then on your Mac, open the wizard BootCamp (click on Launchpad and type "bootcamp" to find) and check ONLY "download the latest software of Apple's Windows support. Save it on your USB thumb drive. Stop your iMac. Remove the USB key and keep it in your hand.

Turn on your iMac by pressing the option (alt) key. You will see an orange icon with Windows. Select this option and wait until you see 'Getting ready devices', wait a little longer until you hear the startup chime and press the option (alt) key to make sure that start you on the external hard drive. That's all!

Now you have a copy of Windows from your external USB drive. You just need to install the BootCamp drivers on your USB (\Bootcamp\Setup.exe). Reset.

Oh, you have 10 Windows running natively on your beautiful iMac.

    Enjoy!

The answer is in the response. I don't know how to post a tip!

  • From a (Macs with Intel processors) external USB storage device

    Hi all

IV ' e installed BootCamp on my internal drive IMAC partition.

On a usb3 SSD external I have connected the OS X.

When I restart my iMac (end of 2013), it always starts with windows... Before I had bootcamp that he would begin normally the SSD...

Ive tried the startup disk in preferences... It does not help...

    Any thoughts? Thank you.

If you restart the iMac and hold Alt/Option with the connected external OSX disc, it appears as a bootable option?

  • External SSD hard drive not detected by Airport Extreme/Time Capsule

Hello everyone, I have the following problem:

-He is locked in a case of badges and used as an external hard drive

-J' have an Airport Extreme (5th generation)

    -J' have a Time Capsule (4th Gen)

-My MBP detects the SSD external hard drive when it is connected to the USB port and works fine

    Problem

-I connect the external SSD hard drive to the USB port on both TCapsule and AExtreme, but the HD is not detected directly (USD and with powered hub of USD)

-HD was formatted as OS x journaled Extended

-J' tried smb and cifs via 'connect to server', but does not work.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Juan

Unfortuantely, Apple did not update the firmware on the USB key (it is still 2.0) port on their routers for a number of years.  As a result, new USB 3.0 drives may or may not work with airports.

Yes, we know that USB 3.0 is supposed to be backward compatible with USB 2.0 in theory, but theory does not always work in practice.

If your drive is formatted as Mac OS extended (journaled)... also called HFS +... .and you have tried the drive with and without a USB hub powered and the reader will not be displayed with you check using the AirPort Utility disks tab... then you have one of a number of readers who do not work with routers from the airport.

I just checked a new LaCie USB 3.0 drive I have here. It works perfectly with a Mac, but it appears not at all when I connect it to the USB port or a powered new AirPort Extreme or new Time Capsule directly, or by using a USB hub.

  • Aspire One d255 does not recognize the usb connected external ssd drive

I want to replace the original HDD 160 GB with a 120 GB Samsung ssd 750 evo but bios and win 10 does not recognize the ssd drive as an external drive connected via a usb connection, so I couldn't create an image of my internal hard drive.  Is there a way to clone my hard drive SSD, so I can exchange the disc later?  I need to update the bios, install a missing driver, etc. ?

I used two different connections: one is a 2.5 "SATA case disc that I used with a disk 2.5" HARD and works very well with the HARD drive and the other is SATA/IDE connector combination with cables for SATA and power and none of these works.  I read in another forum during my research that the Aspire One d255 doesn't recognize any external SSD connected through a USB either.  Since my netbook has no data, and I had just a pure 10 Windows installed on his drive HARD internal, I removed the 160 GB HARD drive and replaced by a 120 GB SSD and installed another Windows own 10.  It worked and my system boots now in less than 20 seconds.   We can close this thread now since I now have a faster machine fully function.  Thank you!

Is it possible to PREVENT VMware Fusion ASKING such question with each single switch to Mac (as said, I always start the two Macs at work and home from the same SSD drive)?

The order of placement of the options in the .vmx configuration file are not relevant as long as each is on its own line.

On the other hand, I hope than boot from SSD external drive to start two different Macs (one at work and one at home) will not break she like says dlhotka.

The main issue will be the differences between the CPU and according to what difference, say a Core 2 Duo vs Quad Core this by itself may be sufficient to trigger WPA on a Windows Virtual Machine.   Like many a Client in Mac OS X or OS X Client that shouldn't be a problem however with Mac OS X Server or OS X Server so that I moved it with a Core 2 Duo vs Quad Core, I have not had problems yet but the haven of the exhaustive tests with the server version.  I think it will go well, however, we should always do... maintain appropriate backups!

  • Lightroom Catalog and preview files on the external SSD using Thunderbolt?

I own an iMac 21 with a regular construction in the hard drive. The RAW files, back ups are on external hard drives.

It would make sense (speed wise) to put my catalog on an external SSD connected via thunderbolt?

My catalog is about 1, 7 GB of big, with glimpses lightroom now use about 40 GB.

I think to an SSD 128 GB dedicated to lightroom.

Would it be a good idea? Or simply be money down the drain?

    Any comments would be welcome.

Read and write in the catalog will be faster than things like scroll thumbnails and switching modules. Glimpses of the building, etc. see very little improvement. This test should give you an idea where things will be better http://www.computer-darkroom.com/blog/will-an-ssd-improve-adobe-lightroom-performance/

  • Problem with Bootcamp

Hello, I have a late 2013 15 "Macbook Pro. Creating a partition using boot camp, the laptop screen went black, but I could see a non-mobile mouse pointer.  Fans on the Macbook Pro started to turn very hard.

I gave him a few minutes, but nothing did, then I hit the power button.  After the laptop came back upward, I noticed that a partition has been created called "BOOTCAMP".

I rebooted the laptop, press the "Option" key and Windows 10 setup via USB.  However, after entering my product key (I bought 10 Windows on USB key), I get a message that says something like: "No found images."  To install Windows, I use a custom USB key that I used with BootCamp.  I think I don't need to use the USB that was in the box of Windows 10.

I don't know what happened here and wanted to know if someone could provide assistance.  Thank you!

I am not sure, but I think that this happens when the key cannot be validated with microsoft.

Try to enter the product key and see if you can then install windows 10 and then try to activate later.

  • Security update 2016-001 vs MacBook Pro mid-2012, using external SSD

    Hello

The 2016-001 security update progress bar went to 25 days and then reduced back to "less than a minute" but seems stuck on 88.1 MB 414MB.  I am currently using an external SSD (HARD following internal disk failure), but everything else seems to work well following a resumption of Time Machine on the SSD.  Any ideas?

    See you soon

Updated - now 173 MB 414 MB and 32 minutes!

  • Best external SSD drive?

Looking for a new external SSD drive. What are some of the best out there for the money?  Really need 1 TB or more.

    Thank you!

The fastest and most effective will be a PCIe SSD installed in an enclosed.  Understand that serves as an external SSD, speed may be limited by the connection in use and you can not achieve the performance that the SSD is capable of.  The fastest connection to date is Thunderbolt2, which may or may not be fast enough (I just don't know).

When you install programs, you can specify the location of drive and the directory of the installation. However, an SSD may speed up things a bit, but the time to load application is more memory and hard drive that dependent dependent processor. Which iMac model you have and how much memory is installed? In addition, stop your virus protection if everything is running and all programs running in the background.
