Install ESX 4i on ESX3.5

One of our clients has an old ESX 3.5 server that has developed a problem. The main problem with the Server 3.5 is that it maintains the VC server disconnection. Linking direct client vSphere Server 3.5 is successful, but he fails constantly to the virtual computer running list. Survey reveals DNS problems can cause problems with getting a host connected to a server VC, so we have studied this and DNS everything is perfect, as are the hosts on the host (s) files.

However, the client decided they want to put ESXi4 on the server to match another server of ESXi4 they have, rather than solving the above problem.

(Maybe I can talk to them in ESXi5 update later...) If all goes well, there is a path of easy upgrade to ESXi 4 to ESXi 5).

They want our help with this upgrade to ESXi4, but I'm not sure if install us ESXi4 on top of ESX 3.5 what would be the result? I'm guessing that the VMFS would be preserved and that we would need to manually add the VM on the host, but I don't know how it would happen.

Can someone advise the potential pitfalls and how to add the VM on the host after installing ESXi4?

Thanks in advance.

Paul

The right way to upgrade ESX 3.5 to ESXi4 is to rebuild the host from scratch. You cannot perform an in place upgrade on ESX 3.5

The best way is to move all the VMS on host shared storage & rebuild the host from scratch (which is how I upgraded our ESX 3.5 hosts to ESXi 4.1)

  • Cannot install esx 4.1 under raid 5 with 2.7 TB hard drive

    Hello

I've been tring install esx 4.1 to IBM 3650 server with Raid-MR10i server with raid 5. 6 x 600 GB hard drive

When it come to selec-hdd it shows the hard drive, but cannot select them.

but this does not happen with esxi 4.1 for esxi 5.0. and also if I tried with 4x600GB hard disk drive is active and I can install esx 4.1

any ideas. IWAS tring to understand her for the last two days

    Thanks in advance

    My thoughts

The maximum supported size of the LUN in vSphere 4.x is 2 TB

It is why ESX 4.1 can't install TB LUN 2.7, but can be downloaded on the 1.8 to

ESXi installation is different because it uses only a small partition of the large LUN and do not create a data store

You will see after installation you probably woun't be able to create a VMFS data with the remaining space store, because it is longer than 2 TB on ESXi4

  • Unistalling ESXi & install ESX, what of my virtual machines?

    Hi all

I think unistalling vSphereHypervisor (ESXi 4.1) and installing vsphere (ESX 4.1) on my home server.

How to preserve my 8 VMs or backup them?

In addition, I will win by opting for ESX 4.1?

At this point, the difference between 4.1 ESX and ESXi 4.1 shrinks, for what you can do through administrative tasks. Get the unit of MAS, and you have more features. With the new ability to remote SSH on ESXi 4.1, you win a lot of what ESX 4.x used to bring to the table (by itself without the need to modify a file of confd ESXi 4)...

So unless you have tools/software that works only in ESX 4.1, I wouldn't wipe and install ESX 4.1... Firstly, you'll need to do the reverse, when you want to go to the next version. On the other hand, most third party tools have been updated to ESXi 4.1, are being updated, or will be before too long. At least those who actually want to keep their customers running VMware products.

I moved my VM to a SAN/NAS in my lab at home. It is very handy when I want to update the host, since I can have run them on a temporary host (a good system, using ESXi 4.1 installed on a USB key). Finally, I have at least two hosts in my lab running 24 x 7 so that I can more easily update things. In addition, it will allow me to run several virtual machines at the same time.

    Hello

    Yes, true,

You can install ESX as a Virtual Machine.

But after installing the ESX as a virtual machine, you will not be able to run a VM on top than ESX VM 64-bit.

  • Install ESX 4 on iSCSI SAN?

    Hello

I'm quite new for esx and SAN, so perhaps this question is quite simple to answer... I tried google for several hours, but could not find appropriate answers.

has got 2 dell r610 (broadcom 5709 with toe and iscsi not unloading, NONE of the local disk/controller) and a md3200i. This configuration was performed by dell, I just told them, wie needs a functional eviroment for 2 servers and storage. then they told me: go with no hard drive and install esx a flashdrive...

I tried, but discovered after several hours that it is not possible to make a flash only installed, because esx need a partition vmfs for serverconsole data store, which will be created during installation. large

so I thought: hey, I got 2 TB worth of disk space on the md3200, why not use that for the data store... so I created 2 LUNS dedicated and defined a r610 of each host. in the Storage Manager the md3200 detected the boradcomes as initiators...

If I shot to the top of the installation... and what is the frag, no SAN to choose...

connection between NIC and md3200 works (when I select the NIC as a boot device, it connects to the md3200)...

what Miss me? what I did wrong? or is this not possible and we buy local / controllers of discs? (then I'll have a little chat with the dell technician who recommend that installation)...

    Thanks for your help

This is what Dell recommends that do you. ESXi loads completely in RAM and done very little written to disk (once per hour, it copies the configuration to an alternate boot partition). All logs are written in a ramdisk so it would be wise to create a location on the San, and then point the logs on this directory

  • I can't install ESX 4.1 or ESXi 4.1 on ASUS P7P55 LX

    Help, please!

I would like to install ESX 4.1 on M/B Asus P7P55 LX.

the problem show which can not detect the adapter network (such as illustrated on the attached files). I found that VMWare does not support realtek ethernet cards (only supported boardcom and intel)

is there a custom driver that can add to the installation process. P7P55 LX use realtek 8112L chipset.

    Help, please

    Thank you very much

    ___

Just get an Intel Pro/1000 NIC that is listed on the VMware HCL and you will have no problem. You'll want to anyway, more than a network connection unique in the area in order to better be getting a pair of cards, or a dual port NIC (or quad port or a combination of the two)...

Using a single NETWORK card for everything which is generally a very bad idea.

  • Install ESX 2.5.5 - installs require licensing to allow power on virtual machines?

Install ESX 2.5.5 - installs require licensing to allow power on virtual machines?

I am part of an exercise in DR for ESX 2.5 installation. If ESX 2.5 requires serial numbers on install to allow power on virtual machines?

Or does the time where the vms turn on for the trial period?

The doc of admin ESX 2.5 says that he must have licenses in order to on the VMs.

Can the production ESX 2.5 serial numbers be used for the exercise of the DR, or is related to the material serial number. (I think it could be used).

    All points will be awarded.

    Thxs

VMware, even in the early days has provided a 60-day evaluation license - worth ESX 2.x and VC 1.x - the same limitations that apply today apply to the ESX 2.x, once that period eval runs out - you will not be able to on the VMs.

licenses are not related to the material. -.

  • Install ESX 4.1

    Hi all

I start to build my virtual infrastructure. I installed ESX 4.1 on 3 BL460c G1 blades with 36G of memory. I put my pagefile to 2G and my boot partition to 30G. I plan on building my VM with 1 G memory. This sounds like the best way to start?

    Thank you

    Hello

No reason to not use ESXi?, VMware is gradually complete ESX in the next version.

Depends on your guest virtual machines and that they will be used. So even if a server file/DNS/domain controller can be fine with 512 MB of RAM, a virtual Exchange may bring 2 GB computer + etc.

Just start small and use vSphere client to see how are the uses of resources (RAM, CPU) virtual machines.

In any case, a 30 GB boot partition? This is a doc of best practices for the design of complete plants ESX.

ESXi installs in less than 1 GB of HARD disk space.

  • install ESX/ESXi on faster disks increases performance of the guest OS?

for example, if you have installed ESX/ESXi on a faster local SSD or HARD disk, would be the overall performance of the ESXi and hosted OS be improved?

Or ESX works completely in memory even after the start, so it does not improve a lot?

If you have an iSCSI storage, I suggest you install ESX (i) on the local disk and attach (s) your storage iSCSI LUN as a VMFS data warehouses.
