Install ESXi 4.1 clean kill given on additional disks?

After over a year of flawless operation, I suspect that my ESXi 4.0 installation has become corrupted. VMS lock, even newly created.  I have a 40 GB drive just to install ESXi and 3 additional (1 to, 1 to and 500 GB) SATA disks for virtual machines.  My question is: what happens to the content, if anything, on those three drives SATA so I had to do a clean install on the disk of 40 GB of ESXi 4.1?  It will recognize the drives without formatting them and thus erase the data here?

After almost a week of banging my head against the wall, I think it's all that I find myself with a try.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Welcome to communities

I would check through the logs to see if you can see any cause. You can capture logs supported by the vSphere Client. File menu export or Administration.

Analyze the logs of error or reset.

You can easily have a problem with a drive or disk contrller.

I remove the 40 GB drive and reinstall ESXi to a 1 GB or more large USB key. If you have installed the vCLI tools or the unit of MAS, you can save the configuration before you remove the drive, but if you think that you have any questions, that I might not. An ESXi installation should find existing data warehouses. You need to reconfigure the network and vswitches. You should also browse the data store and do a right-click on the VMX files ├a import their inventory.

  • C200 M2 LFF does not see the disks in the start menu after installing ESXi

So in front of me, I have a brand new C200 M2 LFF with a single E5606 processor, 20 GB of RAM and a controller LSI Megaraid 9260 - 4i and 4 drives of 1 TB SAS. I put the disks in a RAID 5 array, I created a 10 GB virtual disk and properly installed ESXi on it twice, with a second virtual disk to be used as a data store.

However, I can't get the thing to boot. It isn't even an option. The only storage in the boot menu option corresponds to the DVD player. If I look at the mass storage controller configuration, in fact, 0 and 4 SATA ports are "not installed" and port 5 has the DVD player.

I tried fiddling with the settings of the BIOS without a bit of luck. Currently, the integrated controller is enabled and the SATA mode is set on improved (which seems to be the default, and what is recommended with Megaraid cards). It is a bundle (UCSC-DBUN-C200-102 by delivery, which seems to be a number of separate reference only), so I didn't have to assemble whatever it is and I guess that all the cables are connected at the factory. I opened the server, and I can say that all the cables look connected.

Any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I have to open a case with the TAC, that's good, but seeing as I can't actually install the operating system there must be something stupid miss me.

Disable the onboard Controller. This is software raid ICH10R.

Reset. Then in the fixed CIMC/BIOS boot order and pint at the LSI.

  • How to install ESXi 5.1 Server DELL with ESXi 5.5 installed on IDSDM?

    Hello

We get a new DELL server that gets 5.5 ESXi installed on IDSDM.

Given that we are still using ESXi 5.1, we want to set up this server to make it work also ESXi 5.1 update 3.

There are 2 physical disks in SAS, which has been configured as RAID1.

We would like to know when we install ESXi 5.1, ought to move the disk RAID1 or IDSDM cards?

If IDSDM cards are preferred, is used for the local HD in RAID?

If we should install on local RAID HD, can we use IDSDM as SSD for ESXi host cards?

    Thank you

In addition, if we install in the HD, can we use the SD card to ESXi host? : - You can install in HD and SD card is used to keep the backup in case of failure of HD of ESXi image. To do this, you must put the image cache in the SD card.

If you install in the SD card, then you must configure the scratches in HD because of the constraint of space with CD card.

  • Cannot install ESXi on a Seagate HDD 5.5

    Hello

While I am trying to install ESXi on a Dell M630 Blade Server, it does not detect the storage drives to install on. I use a Dell certified 500 GB 7.2 K rpm NLSAS 6Gbps in 2.5 Hot plug Seagate (model number hard drive ST9500620SS).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

In some cases, it may be necessary to clean the partition table on the disk. In any case, depending on your hardware, components, you may need to use custom Dell ESXi image, which includes additional drivers to take support the Dell hardware. You will find the image at http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/product/poweredge-m630/drivers. Simply change the ESXi 5.5 operating system and expand the 'Business Solutions '.

  • Install ESXi on laptop

    Hello

Just again with installation question, how to add NETWORK adapter drivers when installing ESXi in the laptop.

and a minimum of RAM, HARD drive and other.

    Thank you

    Anand.P.K

To install ESXi on unsupported hardware, you will need to know if there is a package of drivers for hardware components such as your network card and create an installation with this already injected driver image.

The minimum requirement for ESXi is 4 GB (you need more memory if you want to run virtual machines however). The basically required disk space depends on the virtual machine to run, for ESXi itself - including the scores of dump - requires less than 10 GB. However, given that it is a laptop, you may have to see if the HARD disk controller is supported as well.

  • Install ESXi 5.5 sees physical not virtual disks

    Hi guys,.

a bit of a beginner but I installed ESXi a few times before and having OK knowledge of server hardware.

I have a server machine that had previously installed Microsoft 2008 is no longer in use so I thought to make good use and install ESXi.

    The machine has 3 x 250 and 2 x 2 GB disks.

At the start of the machine, I dutifully press Ctrl-E and configure the 3 drives in 1 x 470GB virtual drive.

However, when ESXi 5.5 has just installed it lists disks in the following order to ask me to choose 1:

    250 GB

    2 GB

    2 GB

    250 GB

    250 GB

I'm sure I'm doing something really stupid, but for the life of me I can't.

    Someone has an idea?

    Thank you, Steve...

You have not given any information on your hardware, but I guess that you used "fake raid" (or "bios raid") to create a single virtual drive. It is NOT supported with ESXi. Only real hardware-controllers...

  • Install ESXi 4.1 see physical disks rather than raid 1

    Data sheet:

    -CPU Intel X 3450

    -Intel S3420GPLC motherboard

    -2 X Seagate ST3750528AS 750 GB (Raid 1)

I try to install esxi 4.1 on above using the embedded raid controller.

According to this post (http://communities.vmware.com/message/1393463#1393463) I set the Commission to use "Intel matrix Raid" as the type of controller.  Who is the one who supports Raid 5 so that I would use anyway.

The problem is when I choose the disc to install VMware shows two physical drives rather than for the raid set.  Installation at one of these BRAKES the raid (not surprising), who then proceeds to try to rebuild his car, but never quite get there.

Gparted and Win 2008 as bios only list the raid set.

The Board is listed in the list of compatibility with the following notes:

    1. State power supply not supplied.

    2. total count and status not provided all of the thermal system and temperature sensors.

    3. when the State of system fan not intended to indicate that a fan has been removed.

4 Intel 82578 DM Gigabit Network Connection not supported.

Anyone has any advice on what I could try?

As a general rule, the RAID controllers on board are NOT material (with BBWC) RAID controllers... Therefore, you will not see a picture that you build on them as a single volume, but as their readers (lone) component... ESX/ESXi requires RAID controllers for drives configured in a table in order to present in a table...

What HCL did the jury on (do not see on the VMware HCL)?

In addition, given that the NETWORK card is not supported, you need to install a NETWORK card that is supported before you will be able to fully install ESX/ESXi on the system...

If you really need to have readers in a table (never a bad idea to use RAID 1 or 10), then you will need get a RAID controller that is on the VMware HCL as supported (for installing ESX/ESXi on) and then move on... I'd go with a controller using the LSI MegaRAID chipset (or this LSI controller directly). As you connect SATA drives to the system, you will want to get the RAID controller that is listed as SATA/SAS-RAID, so that it will work properly/entirely with the SATA (and SAS) readers... Newegg has the LSI MegaRAID cards manage up to four drives internally (and are on the VMware HCL) for not much money (~ $300 each)...

As many people on these boards will tell you, material compatibility is CRITICAL for ESX/ESXi... VMware publishes and updates constantly, their HCL for a reason... If it's on, then it is supported in the configuration also listed... If something is not listed for a certain version/version, then you can pretty much bet that it is not supported and will not work. If you want a stable host and environment, you will have to pay special attention to the HCL in deciding the selection of material...

  • UCS C220 M3 custom problem after installing ESXi 5.1.0 Cisco

    Hello world

I m using a Cisco UCS C220 M3 when I tried to install ESXi 5.1.0 custom Cisco after complete the entire process and restart the server. The ESXi has not started it appeared as if there is no operating system.

In addition, before installing ESXi I configured a HDD in RAID 0, initialized the RAMDisk and chosen as a pilot.

    Hoping someone could help me.

    Llianovich,

Unfortunately, the on-board controller is not supported with ESXi.  I saw other people using this controller for VMware and makes the work but the behavior is very random and it could work or fail at any time. It is recommended to use one of the controllers of basic PCI or Mezzanine by the ESXi (see c220 m3 datasheet below)

  • Initialization failed: press a button to try again... when installing ESXi ISO

After a repair of an already open a question problem, a new question was raised.  I open another question because this problem is new, and I thought that a new question must be requested in this regard.

Following the instructions of this question, I have re-recognized my blade twice.  Looking at the KVM, I have not seen a no boot device message, which was to be expected.  I went to re - install ESXi 5.5 (which was already installed on the SD card before the open-ended question) and I am now met with the following message is displayed:

isolinux: disk error 20, AX = 422D, reader EF

I rebooted several times the blade to re - try unsuccessfully to installation.  I even went back to an ISO of 5.1 ESXi, who gave the best results.

The ISOs I use are UCS VMware ISOs downloaded directly from VMware.

  • Could not install ESXi on UCS B200M2

I have traced the image ISO of ESXi in KVM virtual media and installation of VM always failed with the message
"Could not load the module/usr/lib/vmware/vmkmod/vmfs3: failure.

I use the downloaded image from VMware with file name "VMware-VMvisor-Installer - 4.1.0.update1 - 348481.x86_64.iso.

Anyone know anything about this? Thank you

Sorry took me awhile to find the email.

So here's the deal with ISO specific to Cisco for ESXi.

You use the specific Cisco of ESXi image if you install ESXi on the following

1 UCS B230 local disk. Image 4.1 standard not a wrong driver LSI. If you perform a boot SAN with Palo you are fine.

    2. If you use any CNAs GEN2 (Emulex and Qlogic). It's true, regardless which you install ESXi on the blade.

According to internal e-mail, I'm looking at these drivers did not have the 4.1U1 image, but should be in the 4.1U2 and 4.0U3.

Result based on the answers above all what has worked and what has not with what equipment I would say that the news of the email are correct.

  • install ESXi on UCS to boot from SAN

    Hello

I have ucs and I need to boot from SAN

    I need to confirm something

When I was installing WindowsServer the UCS to boot from SAN. I have attached the iso drivers for the HBA driver so that the blade can detect the boot LUN.

Now, I'm going to install ESXi. Do you know if I need to use the iso as drivers for the HBA as with windows or ESXi detects this and will present me the boot LUN to start the installation?

We will use the ESXi, VMware no custom of Cisco

    Thank you

    Hello

    A major difference:

MSFT Windows has no drivers of enic fnic UCS preinstalled with the distribution of iso.

ESXi has, but most likely not one who demands that the UCS support matrix.

    See http://www.cisco.com/web/techdoc/ucs/interoperability/matrix/matrix.html

Therefore you install ESXi ISO of the distribution, and then you update the drivers of the enic/fnic

    See http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/unified_computing/ucs/sw/vic_driver...

2 > installation procedure of NU METAL.

    Thank you

    ANUP Kumar

    Welcome to the community,

    1. version to be used depends on what is supported on your hardware (see VMware Compatibility Guide) especially with the new generation of server (Gen8/Gen9) you must customize the installation ESXi yourself (inject the necessary drivers) or use the already custom image provided by HP (see Customize of Images VMware ESXi for HP ProLiant servers)
    2. the installation is quite simple. Start the host from an ESXi installation CD and follow the instructions on the screen.

What you can do before installing ESXi is to update the host with the latest firmware available and set up the RAID. Also, don't forget to activate the settings necessary BIOS, like the x - VT (Virtualization Technology)... It is also advisable to define 'High Performance' power management profile.
