Install ESXi under VMware Server?

Is it possible to install ESXi as a machine virtual in VMware Server 2, just for him give a look? Or what I need to install it on a dedicated hardware platform?

I have converted a physical server using VMWare converter 4.

When I start VMWare server 2 using the vmdk file converted - I need to install VMWare tools on this server.

    How do I do that?

If you return to vCenter Converter, which you can do it from another machine that installed him as long as he has access to hard and you .vmx files product, there is an option to "configure the Machine' rather than 'Convert the Machine' and this should allow installation of the tools in the image. If the converted image actually starts on the server 2.0 then there is an option in the web interface (https://yourserver:8333) to install VMware Tools when the prompt is selected in the left pane.

  • How to install ESXi 5.1 Server DELL with ESXi 5.5 installed on IDSDM?

    Hello

We get a new DELL server that gets 5.5 ESXi installed on IDSDM.

Given that we are still using ESXi 5.1, we want to set up this server to make it work also ESXi 5.1 update 3.

There are 2 physical disks in SAS, which has been configured as RAID1.

We would like to know when we install ESXi 5.1, ought to move the disk RAID1 or IDSDM cards?

If IDSDM cards are preferred, is used for the local HD in RAID?

If we should install on local RAID HD, can we use IDSDM as SSD for ESXi host cards?

    Thank you

In addition, if we install in the HD, can we use the SD card to ESXi host? : - You can install in HD and SD card is used to keep the backup in case of failure of HD of ESXi image. To do this, you must put the image cache in the SD card.

If you install in the SD card, then you must configure the scratches in HD because of the constraint of space with CD card.

For the test, I have ESXi installed under Fusion on a MacBook Pro. The MacBook definitely 64 bit I run 64-bit Windows Vista and 7 as VMs support, including under Bootcamp.

I followed several different instructions of configuration of ESXi on the merger without success, including: http://communities.VMware.com/docs/doc-6590

My goal is to create two virtual servers from MS Windows 2008 Std 64 bit on the server of VMWare or ESXi installable. I bought Windows 2008 Std, 11 (a phyiscal and a virtual) licenses. Is I meet problems by using only 11 license to create two virtual servers? I'll have to buy another copy of MS Windows 2008 std 1 + 1 to create two virtual servers?    THX.

Its one of these licenses MS issues, but it relates to virtualization because you intend to virtualize it so here's the guide, you can check http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/C/A/FCAB58A9-CCAD-4E0A-A673-88A5EE74E2CC/Windows_Server_2008_Virtual_Tech-VL_Brief-Jan_09.docx and the best way to check is to call MS support for free since MS tends to change they licenses positions often is the only way to ensure that its accuracy.

  • Simple player for VmWare server?

    Hello

I'm under VmWare server 2.0 on my desktop Ubuntu, I often need to configure new virtual machines to test.

My qyestion is: is there a quick way to run a VirtualMachine (for example the player) or I have every time to start the server? Can we install VmPlayer with VmServer?

    Thank you

The Player and Server products fit together. However...

On the Web console VI for the virtual machine, there is a command to create a shortcut on the desktop. When you double-click the shortcut and enter your credentials, it will open a console for this virtual machine. If the virtual machine does not work, it will be started. Or you can use the vmrun utility.

Close the console doesn't stop the host, of course. If you want to stop it, you will need to use the web console to VI, the vmrun utility, or just simply the guest to close.

    Good luck!

  • VMWARE SERVER OR ESX? infrastructure consolidation

    Hello

We must take a decision on a simple question. To consolidate our 2 servers on VMWARE SERVER 2 or move to ESX.

Currently, we have 1 esx (performing a large) and 1 SERVER VMWARE 1.06 (no operation never met nor). We have more skills on VMWARE SERVER and we vmwares heavily downloading clients (vms development).

On VMWARE SERVER, it is crystal clear, but on ESX (especially with LINUX VM) is tricky. Under Windows, we use the converter but with linux, we don't have many options.

I think the underlying question is: product IS VMWARE SERVER is going to disappear?

I think that you have very well answered your question on what platform you use. You seem to be a lot more comfortable with VMware Server - and it's a great product - so why not stick with it? You might consider ESXi (free version)... assuming that your hardware will support it, but I think you might find the complexity of dealing with ever-present VMFS file system - and it sounds like it is your biggest problem with ESX.

I think the underlying question is: product IS VMWARE SERVER is going to disappear?

Not any time soon. VMware Server fills a different niche than not ESX/ESXi. VMware Server 2.0 is already available and I do not see VMware keeps the product - it is an introduction to virtualization soft and is a path to the company, ESX product range.

  • How to configure the network adapter when you run ESXi on VmWare workstation?

How to configure the network card installing ESXi on VmWare workstation 6.0.0?

These are the options: I tried bridged, host-only NAP.  None of them works

What Miss me? driver or adapater?

I'm running on vmware workstation on Windows 7 with Lenovo laptop.

in the configuration of your virtual machine, the main issue is memory. you gave the 2 GB of RAM, whereas ESXi 6 cannot go forward without minimum 4 GB of RAM.

If please have 4 GB of RAM and re-run Setup. you will get through.

message about the network card should also not appear after that. What kind of network you choose depends on your need.

  • VMWare Server 2 into conflict with Microsoft Virtual PC 2007

I use Windows Vista x 64, when I have a virtual VMWare Server 2.0 open, and then start upward a Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 Virtual Machine, VMWare Machine will be output/die. If I already have a MS VPC 2007 open machine, then when I try to start a VMWare VM, I get the following message:

Unable to connect to the MKS: there is no VMware process running for the C:\Users\Rusty\Documents\VMWare Machines\Ubuntu\Ubuntu.vmx configuration file virtual
    Either run "C:\Program Files (x 86) \VMware\VMware Server\x64\vmware-vmx.exe C:\Users\Rusty\Documents\VMWare virtual Machines\Ubuntu\Ubuntu.vmx" manually on the server.
    or save the configuration file.

It is likely that VPC 2007 leaves the CPU in operation VMX VMware Server prevents to alternate between legacy and long mode.  Unfortunately, this switch is required for the majority of host/guest under VMware Server 2 configurations.

I don't know if it is possible to disable VT - x in VPC 2007 support, but if this is the case, maybe it's a work around for this problem.

  • The passage to vSphere VMWare Server 2.0?  How?

    Hello-

I hope someone can point me in the right direction here.

I'm under VMWare Server 2.0 on a box of 2300 Windows R2.  After having proven virtualization to management, I bought vSphere. Now I see that I need help to determine the best place to start with this migration project.  I have several questions, I hope someone can help with.

#1.  VMWare Server 2.0 is the box now have is that I want to use with VSphere.  The problem I have is that I have four virtual servers running on this box.  Y at - it a conversion utility to move in and outside this area of VMware Server 2.0 in vSphere environment?   Is it possible to move to something like a Dell EqualLogix (which I have) and box of your choice in the vSphere environment? Should I worry about what it is?  If Yes, what?

#2.  I have four physical servers that I will be the conversion to vSphere?  Is there a tool to help with this?

Tips, links to documentation and of course any help is greatly appreciated!

    Thank you!

    Hello

Welcome to the VMware community forums!

Basically the answer boils down to the use of VMware vCenter Converter

But if you want to reuse the same box for vSphere/ESX you have a little problem with that chickens and eggs for the existing virtual machine

You can however copy the VM out there to external storage and import them manually in vSphere later.

To do this, you may need to use the vmkfstools command line tool to import the disks in the correct format.

    Hope this helps,

  • Installing the server on VMware server ESXi

    Hello

Im trying to install esxi iso file in a VMware Server (in my laptop with 4 GB and windows 7 prof). I have created a virtual machine and tried to proceed with the installation. Initial measures follows and ends with Esc - repair-installation of the screen. In this screen im not control keystrokes at the keyboard and mouse n and cannot go any further. I found in the net that this method will work for purposes of practice. Can someone help me. ?

    Hello Pjo

For your question, I understand what you are trying to install ESXi on your laptop to test / learning object. I also suppose that you try ESXi 4. ESXi 4 requires 64-bit processor. Your laptop should also support virtualization. To make sure that your laptop supports virtualization, go to configuration and find what is called VT and then activate it if it is not yet enabled.

Once you have completed step abvoe, download & install the latest version of VMWare Workstation. Then create a new virtual machine, assign them to less than 2 GB of RAM, and then try again to install ESXi 4.

I believe that this will help you to start with. If you have any other questions feel free to write back to me. And if you think that this answer is correct, please mark correct. If in case it is not correct, but has been useful so mark has useful

    Thank you very much

  • Graduating from VMware Server to ESXi

As I said in another forum, I take my virtual business and contemplate the correct path.  After reflection, I feel that vSphere Essentials Plus may be the 'end of the road' for us.  This end of the road is several months, or even years, away.  I want to do is expose the plan of base here and let you guys and girls look over and tell me if I'm off track.

Currently we have three hosts, one running VMware Server 1.02, another running server 1.06, the last and most recent is running Server 2.01.

I bought a new server with another machine which is the equivalent in power, but not under the name of storage space.  Currently, it is not used.  So basically, I have four machines capable of being the host machines.  In addition, when I am finished with an Exchange migration, I have yet another machine with enough power to be a host.

While I have a lot of machines available, I think I'll only be using a total of three machines in the end.  The two most recent machines and the current Exchange computer.  The rest will be moved to other functions or simply disappear (EBAY FTW!).

My plan is to install ESXi on the two most recent physical machines.  Move more, if not all, of my current virtual machines for them.  If necessary, I'll pull the Exchange machine retreat in the mix for a total of three ESXi hosts.  For a period of time, I will simply use ESXi hosts and the customer vShpere to control.  When I find it is unmanageable, I'll add vSphere Essentials Plus and a SAN to the mix for my goal of end of maximum availability, fault tolerance and manageability.  Obviously the big breakpoint as soon as now the San that this single purchase would consume most of my annual budget.

In any case, the only thing I like about running VMware Server ESXi vs is that it runs so that I can directly access files of the virtual machine on the host computer for backups, etc..  From what I see, if I install ESXi on these hosts, I won't be able to move, copy, back up virtual machines in a very easy way.  I have read, it can be done with the remote command line Interface, but I'm having a time difficult to determine if it works with ESXi or not.

    So here are my questions:

    (1) anyone see anything wrong with the plan?

    (2) understanding that I simply can't afford a SAN and vSphere Essentials most right now, is there a way I can safely access the virtual machines on ESXi for backups?  This can be automated?

    (3) looking forward, what is the less expensive, more powerful SAN for up to 3 servers?  I think maybe a Dell MD3000 or possibly a PS4000 EMC.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to help me.

    > 1). Anyone see something wrong with the plan?

ESXi has limited hardware compatibility list, so first you must make sure that esxi will work on your hardware. HCL is a list of the certified material, so your host doesn't have to be on HCL, but NIC and RAID cards must be.

    > 2). Understanding that I simply can't afford a SAN and vSphere Essentials most right now, is it possible that I can safely access the virtual machines on ESXi for backups? This can be automated?

Yes, but you always buy the less essential to use VCB.

    > 3). Looking forward, what is the less expensive, more powerful SAN for up to 3 servers? I think maybe a Dell MD3000 or possibly a PS4000 EMC.
