VMWARE SERVER OR ESX? infrastructure consolidation

Hello

We must take a decision on a simple question. To consolidate our 2 servers on VMWARE SERVER 2 or move to ESX.

Currently, we have 1 esx (performing a large) and 1 SERVER VMWARE 1.06 (no operation never met nor). We have more skills on VMWARE SERVER and we vmwares heavily downloading clients (vms development).

On VMWARE SERVER, it is crystal clear, but on ESX (especially with LINUX VM) is tricky. Under Windows, we use the converter but with linux, we don't have many options.

I think the underlying question is: product IS VMWARE SERVER is going to disappear?

Any notice will be really appreciatte!

Kind regards

Hernán.

I think that you have very well answered your question on what platform you use. You seem to be a lot more comfortable with VMware Server - and it's a great product - so why not stick with it? You might consider ESXi (free version)... assuming that your hardware will support it, but I think you might find the complexity of dealing with ever-present VMFS file system - and it sounds like it is your biggest problem with ESX.

I think the underlying question is: product IS VMWARE SERVER is going to disappear?

Not any time soon. VMware Server fills a different niche than not ESX/ESXi. VMware Server 2.0 is already available and I do not see VMware keeps the product - it is an introduction to virtualization soft and is a path to the company, ESX product range.

    Hola,

El hecho usar el esxi free dificulta a poco (o mucho depende para only) Administration del día a Día del entorno esxi.

Las and/or mas una obvias tiene el free esxi are that for example any faffa you will have provide una para esxi backup respond. Have usar things scripts of the VMWare para programar una comunidad como forma automated los backups, without is las soportan jumbo frames, the VI API are en modo lectura (eso limited you one that no other realize mediante don't scripts Quarto tasks you en entorno virtual), etc...

Te paso UN link para veas as caracteristicas las get licenses of VMWare pago.

Para el proceso virtualizacion you recomendaria usases el vmware converter 4.01 as in the majority of cases facilitated the Migración.

Respecto has the las CPU pregunta y discos, cuando to virtualiza para reaching a good level of page are important disponer o the processor cores. In principio few mas mejor.

Pero igual o mas important las CPU are UN acceso a rapido disco (e/s). A menudo suele ser el of botella in los entornos virtualizacion cuello.

  • move Virtual GuestOS in Vmware Server 2.0 to ESX Server 3.5 U4

    Hello

We intend to pass the 3 servers in Vmware Server 2.0 to server Vmware ESX 3.5 U4.

Can anyone tell me please what it takes...

I downloaded the OVF tool and installed, it works very well, so now I know how to create a .ovf from a .vmx file

but the problem is when I created the file .ovf from a .vmx file located on Vmware server 2.0, I got an error when I tried to import it into ESX via VMWare Vcenter... which is:

the family of equipment if the paskage of the FVO is not supported: vmx-07

and ths is true, because the hardware platform where the Vmware Server 2.0 is running is not the same ESX 3.5 server running...

I hope that someone can show me what steps I must take to achieve this...

    Thank you!!

    Best regards

    Tom

I thought that I could simply convert without downloading for ESX as the conversion process runs... but this is not possible

No it's not.  It will make the COPY of the virtual machine, but in order to convert anything, there need duplicate files and make it compatible.  So really all that is done is change of version/type of the VMDK to one that is suitable for ESX read.  It's like the conversion of a pdf document.  Copy you it, but older versions of Acrobat will not able to read the most recent versions.  It's the same, the content is there, simply to make it readable.

  • Generate url for virtual machine installed on vmware server console programmatically

    Hello

I want to generate URLs for machine vmware console located on vmware server. Are there examples of available in c# code? Any help will be really good.

    Thank you.

    Hello

There are already several posts/Articles on this subject. What works for ESX should work for VMware Server. The misfortune is that it should be avoided for several reasons:

    (1) there are only a limited number of "consoles" allowed for a given server of VMware

    (2) RDP/VNC is a tool much better for this as there are no such limits

    (3) the security of this method is somewhat limited

    (4) more than one user can access the same VM without protection of the user (essentially a struggle for control)

So in general, it is best to RDP/VNC in the virtual machine is to use the console.

He estado doing some small and comprobaciones y estas son put conclusiones al respecto finals of you problem.

    (1) Aunque sea algo buggy el main method of Administration should be the Administration that leads web grounded el vmware server 2.

    (2) Tanto con el client of vmware 3.5 (VI) como no con el vSphere none are posible editar las propiedades las maquinas office version of hw 7 a server vmware server 2. Para poder esta tarea deberias hacer perform a downgrade del virtual hw has the version 4. Debes valorar if you puedes enabling tener las maquinas office in el hw 4. Busca por red las caracteristicas del hw 7 there decide whether puedes hacer el downgrade. If decides hacerlo puedes seguir por esta Guía example: http://www.techhead.co.uk/vmware-esx-how-to-downgrade-a-vms-vm-versionhw-level-from-7-4-0-to-4-3-x

    (3) Por ultimo para as desde el vSphere client you can connect to a server of vmware UN 2, so el puerto del servidor No. https are el 443 to debe specifying of forma explicita a hora of a1 using el client vShpere.

Pongo an example, if the web conexion al servidor vmware server 2 via're https://ip_servidor:8333 /, entonces cuando you conectas using el client vSphere (version 4.0) in the field of intellectual property to debe poner ip_servidor:8333. • VMware Server Version 2.0.2 - migrate VM to ESXi 5.5?

    Hey guys

I use an old Dell T410 with VMware Server Version 2.0.2 (Build 203138) server running on top of serving 2008R1.

I'm looking to install a new server and you want to run ESXi 5.5.

Is it possible to convert VM VMware Server Version 2.0.2 (Build 203138) to ESXi 5.5?

Otherwise I'm running Shadowprotect. If I can't convert, is it possible to do a HIR to ESXi 5.5 from an image of a VM from VMware Server Version 2.0.2 (Build 203138) Shadowprotect?

Finally, I was looking for to run ESXi 5.5 Essentials (not more) on the new physical host and then use the old host as a temporary backup with ESXi 5.5 too. I have to buy 2 x 5.5 ESXi licenses to run it on both machines?

If you want more specifications about the network made me know.

    Kind regards

    Aaron

    Hello

You must convert the virtual server computers to be able to run on ESXi 5.5.

Take a look at this, it is perhaps useful:

How to migrate computers virtual vmware server to vSphere, ESXi

On the essential, it allows to manage 3 servers (servers esxi) with up to 2 processors of each:

Editions of vSphere, vSphere is? Leading Virtual Infrastructure | United States

But, with just the basics, you will be things like HA.

  • Cannot save the virtual machine in VMWare Server 2

    Hi all:

I created a VM (12.1 OpenSuSE 32bits) in VMWare Workstation 7; then I copied it to a host VMWare Server 2.

When I try to save the virtual machine via the web, the server fails (or at least interrupts the response from Web page), so I tried to save it via command line.

After searching a bit I found this:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1006160

The question is now that I can't find any vmware-cmd anywhere, and when I run vmware-vim-cmd I get the following error:

    vmh2: / data/vmachines/postgresql-box # vim - vmware - cmd solo/registervm /data/vmines/postgresql-box/postgresql-box.vmx
    Connection failed: vim.fault.NoPermission

So I'm stuck... someone can help me?

BTW: what is ESX, ESXi and what version of ESXi is included in VMWare Server 2?

    Thank you very much

    Luis

I can't tell you exactly what are the causes of the problem. What I would try (a solution) is to create a new virtual machine in VMware Server with the same specifications as the original one, then copy the two files hard in the new virtual machine folder and edit the .vmx file for the new VM 'OpenSuSE - 12.1 - cl1 - 000001.vmdk' use as its virtual drive.

  • VMware Server 2 migration

Hello group, we set off on virtualization, we used until present time server 2, checking on these pages, I've read about free vSphere.

I downloaded ISO and the customer. When you start to use it, it says I have 60 day trial.

Can please briefly explain you what is free and what is not?

The basic vSphere 4/5 hypervisor is free, who has at least as many features as VMware Server 2.

However, you must still apply for a license (which is free) to get rid of the warning of 60 days.  Follow these steps:

  • Fedora to access VMware server 2 web

    Hello

I had problems with the interface web vmware server 2. When I first install vmware server 2 on a clean system, it works fine. However, after a reboot, the web interface is more accessible to the general public.

    When I do

I tried rerun vmware - config.pl, however this does not resolve the issue. I also tried to restart the management interface and that does not work either.

    Thank you

    Hello

    I had same problem - Fedora 14 64 bit & vmware 2.0.2... and nothing on google :-/

Because I have not found a solution for this problem, so I wrote this post (my first btw :-))

After you install vmware (and patch before), everything works well before the first server to restart. After reboot - web access (port 8222 & 8333) has not worked.

    For me, it has worked:

    (1) check if vmware - spend is running (when vmware service is started):

    # ps to the | grep vmware - pass

    --------------------------

    root of 1752 0.0 0.6 50760 225708?        SSL 14:36 0:01 / usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-hostd - a d u - /etc/vmware/hostd/config.xml

    (2) If vmware - spend does not, try to run vmware - pass manually (without the-d (demon) parameter):

    # / usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-hostd - a u /etc/vmware/hostd/config.xml

    --------------------------

(there was no mistake as.. libvmomi.so.1.0: no such file or directory)

    (3) copy (or link) libraries starting from/usr/lib/vmware/vmacore/and/usr/lib/vmware/lib/to /lib64/

    # cp /usr/lib/vmware/vmacore/libvmomi.so.1.0 /lib64/

    # cp /usr/lib/vmware/vmacore/libvmacore.so.1.0 /lib64/

    # cp /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libexpat.so.0/libexpat.so.0 /lib64/

    (4) just try to restart the vmware service or server; I had to run vmware - config.pl new - vmware crashed.

If this isn't the case, vmware - always come running after you restart, try to rerun manually and wait minute (if it is started).

I already had virtual machine in vmware, so I got another problem...

VMware-get started, but just for a minute. After a minute, he wrote something as... out of memory. I tried to rename my vm and vmware has worked well (WebAccess Inc.) ...

So... Here is the solution to another problem...

    5) simply to stop the vmware service

judgment of vmware for the service #.

    6) Rename the library libxml2 vmware based

    # mv /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libxml2.so.2 /usr/lib/vmware/lib/BAD-libxml2.so.2

VMware will skip this library and use a for/lib64 /...

    (7) restart the server and try out it

  • VMware server Console Black

    Hello

When I open a (Windows 2003 32-bit) VMware Server console I get the attached black console.

When I make RDP to this server also I get the same console. I changed the display of color options, and even in this case, I get the same screen.

This virtual server is hosted on ESX 3.5i and I migrated to anotehr ESX host, but the problem remains the same.

No idea how to solve this problem?

See the blog below.  We have came across this the other day because a customer's lack of space on the C: drive.  However, change registry entries remotely did not work.  I think somehow, by pressing a key combination when you use the VMware Console and a user who had never logged, we got the loading screen.  I think it is or .  But whatever it is, you have to check the registry database for colors.

  • Is VMware Server still in development?

    Hi all

I really like VMware server, but I see that there are no updates for a while. I understand that it is a free product of VMware, so it gets all the updates, but it's almost half a year ago with the last update. And there are some problems with the new operating systems such as Ubuntu 10.04. For my work as a VMware esx or I is not an option, otherwise I was moved to these solutions. So there there will be updates for VMware server?

    Thank you in advance.

    A possible answer here: http://www.vmware.com/support/policies/lifecycle/general/index.html#policy_server

VMware Server has been declared end of availability January 2010. Support will be limited to the technical guidelines for the duration of the support period.
