  I had trouble installing the new software with Windows 8, but eventually, the issues have been resolved.  But this one has completely mystified me.

  I downloaded and installed Adobe Photoshop elements 11 and Prime Minister 11 Adobe elements.   Thank you for your comments. It seems that I solved the problem of the default gateway. Time will tell if the remains of the printer connected through long periods of no use (see update below).

  I wanted to just report, I just formatted the entire hard drive and reinstalled from scratch with a different win xp cd (sp3 and sata drivers included), now the gfx drivers work as they should and display works fine.

  I've had this Y40-80 during about 9 months and it has recently been acting strangely. The laptop will stop randomly. I thought that it was a sign, I had to calibrate the battery but after I had calibrated the battery, the battery meter percentage remained at 100% for a good 2 hours until it starts to decrease.
