IPad wi - fi MAC address not "MAC address" according to the Linksys router

WRT55AG 2.0:

Failed to save the MAC address of my new iPad wi - fi MAC filtering table.  Upgrade to the latest firmware, but still does not work.  When I try to record, I get a pop-up that says: "not a MAC Address.

If I disable the MAC filtering, the iPad can be accessed via the router and the router shows the good MAC iPad in the customer table wireless, but I much perfer to have enabled MAC filtering.

1. the MAC address filter is not a problem. It's a joke. As I have said before: the MAC addresses are always transferred not encrypted. If someone tries to penetrate your WPA2 protected wireless network, it is necessary to capture a lot of wireless traffic to crack the password. By the time it is cracked (who is supposed to be very difficult and time consuming if the password is good) the hacker knows all the MAC addresses that are accepted for your wireless network.

2 No. more isn't always better. Are three locks on your door better than two? Ten are better than two? Why have you not 10 locks on your door? The longer the better? It's more, but the impact on you is much more important than the impact on an attacker. WPA2 with a strong password is like putting a stone wall think 100feet for protection. It is very high and very difficult to 'jump '. Filtering of MAC addresses is like putting another small 5 inch thin barrier in front of the wall. The longer the better? Anyone that can fly over the wall will easily get over the fence. The greatest effect of the fence, it's that you will sometimes fall on it because you have forgotten. Compared to WPA2 security with a password strong MAC filter is simply not useful.

3. the same for the SSID broadcast. Leave it active. The SSID is always transferred unencrypted over the affair with the access point. Any malicious person can easily find your SSID. In addition, it is easy to force a device associated to re-associate. With the right software, it takes a few seconds to learn the SSID. And even with SSID broadcast disabled, him access point always sends a signal of ELT. This means that the existence of your access point is immediately visible. Just the SSID is not transmitted with the tag.

4. the disabled SSID broadcast technically breaks the wireless standard. Problems with wireless clients are common.

5. the hidden SSID will be also the batteries in your wireless devices: wireless device always must actively try to connect from the hidden SSID. There is no other way to find out whether there is in the range. If you have ten networks hidden in the list of your wireless device wireless networks will try these ten networks frequently to see if one of these is in the range. In other words, it will try to connect to the hidden SSID and see if anything responds. If you do not connect to any hidden SSID (i.e. all the wireless networks in your list are broadcast) then it is very easy to find out whether a network is within reach: the device has to do is passively listen to the signals from the tags. There is no need to send anything until a known SSID is within reach. Then only the wireless device will try to associate with the SSID.

So: don't hide your own SSID. And stay away from the other SSID hidden. Do not associate those or don't forget to remove from the list of preferred networks prior to departure. This will allow you to save a lot of battery power...

To summarize: your neighbor who doesn't know computers would have a problem with broadcast SSID disabled or filtering of MAC addresses. But your neighbour do not know how to use a software to crack a wireless anyway. Anyone who is sophisticated enough to try a good attack on a protected network WPA2 will have no problem with the SSID broadcast or filtering of MAC addresses.

And if it is an automated attack the SSID and MAC address is detected automatically. The broadcast SSID and MAC address filters are issues for you. They are not problems for any aggressor.

  • Linksys Router WRT160N - Wireless does not connect to the cable modem

I installed the Linksys WRT160n router to replace an existing G router. When installed the new wireless router works, but the router does not receive a connection (IP address - look under status) of the cable modem (so no internet). When I reconnect the old router and then connect the new router, I get any internet connection through two routers (so the old dishes router the IP address that accepts the new router).

I have configured the router N new for

"Automatic configuration - DHCP", no need for connection, IP address dynamic, etc (as required by ISP - Timewarner)

I tried to renewal and release IP address by the router N when it is connected directly to the main switch (the switch to connect to the cable modem). In so doing, shouldn't that assign a new IP address to the router?

I am allowed 3 IPs from the cable company (because of the switch) and I use all three with three different internet IP cameras to each address for home security system.

Any suggestions on why the router is not connecting to the internet? Do I need to reboot physically everything on the network, including the cable modem?

If I understand your post, you said that your ISP gives you 3 Internet IP addresses and you have 3 cameras that use one of these Internet IP addresses.  If this is correct, then that leaves no IP Internet address for your WRT160N use - so that would explain why your WRT160N cannot get an Internet connection.

If I misread your post, and you have an Internet IP address available for the WRT160N, you might have a problem with your modem and two WRT160N tries to use the same 192.168.1.x subnet.  To check this, follow these steps:

    (1) Please indicate addresses that use your cameras (IE before you take the test below).  If the addresses do not begin with 192.168, then erase the last half of each address.

    (2) Please indicate your ISP

    (3) Please indicate the make and exact model of your modem (not the WRT160N) number.

    (4) Please do the following test:

Put your entire network.  Disconnect the switch (including cameras) to the modem.  Using an ethernet cable, connect your modem directly to your computer.  (Do not use the WRT160N for this test).  Turn on the modem and the computer.  Make sure you have an active Internet connection, then go ahead with what follows: (even if your Internet connection does not work, include this and move forward.)

Go to 'Start' > all programs > Accessories > command prompt.
A black DOS window will appear. Type "ipconfig/all" (with no quotes), and press the Enter key.   Copy all results in your next post.  To make the copy, highlight the results, and then use the keys copy (Ctrl-c) and paste (Ctrl-v) keys.  If your "IP address" does not begin with 192.168, then for security reasons, delete the latter half of your IP address.

Hi everyone, my switch cisco small business SF 302-08 has the latest firmware and I want to activate the command routing, but it doesn't let me do that.

I've read the reference guide for orders, do all this procedure: IP Routing Protocol independent commands starting at page 629, but nothing happens. I need this because I want a routing between VLANs

    Kind regards.

    Hi Felipe

Look forward to hearing how you go.

If you reset the factory default switch and the switch is NOT connected to a server, the switch restarts with a default IP 192.168.1.245 address according to the Quick start guide .  If your PC has a static address 192.168.1.2, you should be able to access the graphical interface of the switch.

    http://www.Cisco.com/en/us/docs/switches/LAN/CSBMs/sf30x_sg30x/Quick_Start/78-19252-01.PDF

If the switch is connected to a DHCP server, the switch Gets an IP via DHCP.

    I've had problems using hyperterminal on my Windows 7 box, that I have overcome by restarting my PC in order to free the COM port.  Settings of the console are;

    • 115200 bits per second
    • 8 data bits
    • no parity
    • 1 stop bit
    • no flow control

If you really have problems, and you think that the switch is faulty, you have the possibility to use the services of small business Support Center (HWC) in order to identify if the switch is good or bad.

  • Instructions for managing macs w ARD on the internet (no static IP address)

Please excuse me if it's asked all the time, but I searched and can not find detailed instructions for this.

I need to manage more than one Mac, on connections to the internet, the devices will not be on the static IP, they will constantly be moving around.

All the videos I have found online seem to show how to connect and manage Macs on LANs w ARD.

    Details:

    ARD v3.8

    All Mac on El Capitan

    Very appreciated for any help!

This question is not particularly related to Apple Remote Desktop; for ARD.  This is a configuration of generic firewall and networking question, so good enough instructions for your specific firewall will work here, as long as the firewall can redirect ports - port TCP 5900, in this case - or if your particular firewall has a VPN - Firewall Server average range and high-end frequently - or if you can implement a VPN server behind your firewall and configure the firewall to forward the VPN protocols (different ports) and ports necessary for the particular VPN.

In general...  I would suggest three ways...   1: set up your firewall to port before port TCP 5900 to the client target.   Maybe TCP 5988.   Or set up a VPN server in your firewall and connect to that and use ARD via a VPN.    If you want to access more than one system on the target network, you will need to either use a range of ports to forward to specific systems behind your firewall and happens to be a problem with many customers - I don't know immediately off-hand if the ARD client allows even to select different target ports - or to set up and move to a VPN.    2: creation and configuration of the VPN server in the firewall allows access to all systems on your network target - a VPN connection makes your local system as it is directly connected to the target network.  3: If you have the VPN server running on a target system and accessible through the firewall port forwarding, this target system must always be available, and all VPN traffic is routed through this system.   It is more complex and can also be a bit difficult to set up.

If you directly expose ARD ports to the Internet via port forwarding, you'll want to either restrict the available source IP ports (to reduce the magnitude of the attackers), and you'll want to be very careful about passwords on target systems.   Ports of the ARD are detected very fluent, and several people and botnets will attempt to access the system password-baited; trying to guess the users and passwords on the target system.   Once attackers have a login and a password, they will then try to spread throughout the rest of the network.  (It's part of why I prefer to use virtual private networks).

Sierra of MacOS support PPTP VPN, so I wouldn't go with any configuration of VPN that you considered it.   I'd probably use L2TP/IPsec, because the customer is generally available in most of the other operating systems, Mac OS and iOS.

There is information available on the network ports used by Apple devices.   If you enable VPN port forwarding, there are discussions on the ports and protocols required to according to VPN you use posted around the ' net and not all firewalls is particularly good to port-forwarding, the protocols and ports VPN. "  Low-end older firewalls and firewalls tend to have problems here.

To locate on the networks of the target systems, you get to use dynamic DNS from client devices or other means to identify the public IP address that is associated with the target customer.   If customers are roaming on disparate networks and not simply roaming IP addresses on their private networks (these addresses can be fixed through DHCP configurations, too) and if you don't have access to intermediate firewalls, then you will probably have to rethink the entire approach, unfortunately.    Connection to mobile systems distance arbitrary is not especially it is possible, he must do something on the client that "tags" or "ad" its network metadata to your own server from tracking client or server monitoring of some other entity (for example messages to the DNS servers used by the dynamic DNS providers), or the management connection must be initiated from the client.    ARD does not support these mechanisms.   Discussions here can get pretty complex, too--in terms of network configuration, both in terms of security for the clients and servers.

There are a few related discussions this general topic in the forums. See here, here, here, here or here.

updated my iPad to 9.3 air activate iPad display does not not my account information, but the Mac computer accepts my Apple ID and password

A lot of people is affected by this problem, and Apple has worked on the issue.  Some found the following steps useful for this issue:

Go to iCloud.com and select settings once you are connected.  Click on your device listed there and remove them from the account (not typing not erase or lost mode).  Restart your device and must ignore this lock of Activation screen because you actually disabled the lock by removing the device for iCloud.com

    I hope that helps!

  • iPad Pro vs Mac book for College?

    Hey all,.

I'm at College right now working on a degree in biomedical physics and planning to go to medical school in the next two years.  I need a new computer, I can record lectures, take notes and write papers and do the graphics.  I'm looking to either a 13 "Mac book Pro with getting an iPad Pro with the pencil and keyboard or the retina.  Really, I'm leaning toward the iPad Pro but I'm not sure if could or can do all the stuff that can make the Mac book.  Any advice would be great; like, what are the limits or the other, which can do it book Mac ipad can't and vice versa?

Since the iPad Pro is a Tablet and not a real computer, like the MacBook Pro is, he will not be able to do all the things that the MacBook Pro can do.

The largest decline in the iPad Pro is that it turns the mobile firmware, iOS, while in the other the MBP runs OS X, which is a variant of Unix.

An another short coming of the iPad Pro with iOS, it is that it doesn't have a file system. On the contrary, the data is stored as part of the application. This a more limited measure implementation then file system used by the MBP and HFS +.

The number of accessories that can be attached to an iPad Pro are much more limited then what can be fixed on the MBP.
