Is it possible to convert a hard drive?

In the documentation, there are a number of sources in option for a clone:

  • Live cloning of a machine running

  • Cloning of a backup disk image (Acronis, etc.)

  • Cloning of a virtual disk file (vmdk, vhd, etc.)

But I don't see any mention of a physical hard diskcloning, is it possible?

It seems a waste to first create a backup image to the hard drive of the system to be cloned, Acronis then use the converter to create a virtual machine from this image.

What better image is there than the real drive of the PC to clone?

And as in my case that I would like to clone the hard disk to a virtual machine from the laptop it ran does not work.

So I can't clone live and the only way to create an Acronis image is to run Acronis on another box with the laptop connected via USB drive.

It would be simpler if the source could be the drive itself real...

There is no need to do this - why?

change the floppy drive and the value of timeout 1 and preset the correct choice, then it is as good as the start of the disc.

If you are interested by this learning effect, I'd suggest to check the ACB of the boot partition and re-create it if it is damaged - it's nothing that I could explain in a few minutes if a search yourself

Is it possible to replace the hard drive with an SSD?

or would it be too expensive?

Yes.  There are several alternatives.  I found a way relatively inexpensive, using a map of mSATA (very small SSD) and an adapter to connect it to the connector IDE 44 pin internal of my PowerBook.  It works very well.  Rather than repeat what I posted previously, you can watch these two topics (which also has good info, other users)

  • Is it possible to partition the hard drive by using software like Partition Master, install XP and an earlier version of Office on the new partition?

Partitioning of a Windows 7 computer

On a laptop Windows 7 HP, it is possible to partition the hard drive by using software like Partition Master, install XP and an earlier version of Office on the new partition? I know I can run Win7 XP mode, but many prefer a base XP environment. Yes, I have new copies unregistered XP and Office 2003.

    TIA,

    Steve

Besides Partition Master you can also use Windows 7 "Disk Managment" to shrink the partition of Windows 7, create a new partition of the space "unallocated", and then do a formatting NTFS "Full".

  • Laptop HP DM1 - possible to update SSD hard drive?

I have a laptop DM1, very slow.  Just wondering if it is possible to upgrade the hard drive to SSD - which means it'll work.   Went through the plug technique, said he can only support 320 GB hard drive (which is weird), but the SSD come as low as 64 GB, so that's fine.  I've already updated the ram to 2 GB, but it is still slow.

See page 45 of the HP DM1 Service Manual here:

    Your manual

It has an easy access door and uses the 9.5 or 7 mm thickness SATA drives and standard of 2.5 inches wide, so it will not be a problem to upgrade to an SSD. After if you need assistance with migration/relocation of software or select a good reasonably priced at SSDS.

  • Recovery is possible on the new hard drive?

    Hello

I think about buying a new hard drive to improve the performance of my laptop Satellite.
I was wondering if it would be possible to restore my system using the recovery on the new hard drive disks.

    Thank you!

As far as I know you can do it. What you need is to buy hard drive compatible and functional.

By curiosity, but what model of laptop do you have and what hard drive you want to buy?

  • It is possible add a smaller hard drive and load windows os on it so that the system boots from that?

    I have a new h9-1150 systems.

Have a hard drive 2 TB as OS main drive seems like a loss, especially if it crashes. This would make a great backup disk, but Windows 7 is already installed on it. Is it possible to transfer Windows to a secondary drive?

    Hello

There are few software around which allow you to clone your HDD in a new HARD drive. Normally, you have to work the numbers (whereby the software). I have clone from a HDD of 750 GB for one SSD 120 GB for my wife machine, 2 weeks back using a product called O & O Diskimage, I had to reduce the c: less than 120 GB first. Now, my wife machine runs on a 120 GB SSD and serve a second HDD of 750Go.

    I hope this helps.

  • Convert a hard drive to a virtual machine

I have a server that the material died which has mirrored hard SATA hard drives in them.  I would like to convert the data on that hard drive to a virtual machine and put it in my vCenter, but I am unable to start the server.  What is the best way to do it?  I can mount and read data from Windows on another machine.  Right now I'm trying to back up data until an acronis image and then use converter to import.  I think it is easier to sense, though.   I also have a backup server Symantec Backup Exec, but I do not have the agent ESX for Symantec.

    Thank you

    Dave

If you want to try the converter, just fix the disk on a physical host somewhere and run a normal conversion.

Once you have done this, create a new empty virtual machine with no disc and you fix vmdk for the reader you want migrated to this new virtual machine. Chances are that you will get the normal NT Loader boot error when you try to start, but you should be able to solve this problem using a fo the following:

    DiskPart

    Fdisk

    Recovery Boot

You can also consider to use something else than VMware converter - perhaps something like Acronis True image?

Good luck and please feed back.

  • Satellite Pro A40: Is it possible to format the HARD drive without disk

I am passing on a Satellite Pro A40 to a brother. It is in very good condition, but has slowed down over the years. I want to get rid of my data (I have on a new machine) and speed up the system by formatting the hard drive.

The machine didn't come with a disc for Windows XP, or a recovery CD (just a CD "tools and utilities"). I'm sure the drive HARD will be partitioned, and I can format the drive without such a disc.

If this is true, how should I do?
    Thank you.

    Hello

I can't believe that you do not have recovery media.
The laptop must be supplied with recovery CD, Tools & Utilities CD, and WinDVD.

    But back to your question;
If you insert a new HARD disk, you will need to use the Toshiba Recovery CD or the original CD of Microsoft Windows to install the operating system.
The new drive is not partitioned HARD and doesn't have any OS pre-installed!

If you n t have the original CD of Microsoft OS you can contact the service provider allowed in your country and you can order it.

    I hope I could help

  • Satellite A210 - 1 4 - possible signs of a hard drive failure

    Hello

I use a Toshiba Satellite A210 - 1 4 and think that the hard drive may be showing signs of failure.

    _The symptoms are: _

    * While the Windows 7 boot frequently stops at 'Starting Windows' screen (before the Windows logo appeared) and all HARD drive activity stops meaning a hard reset is necessary to bring him back.

    * When I unplug the power cord on Windows 7, the computer freezes usually with nothing happens and stop any HARD drive activity, once again a hard reset is required to bring back to life.

What are these early signs of HARD drive failure or is there something else wrong?

    Hey Buddy,

For me it doesn t look like the HARD drive malfunction if Windows 7 stops when starting or freezes when you unplug the AC adapter

Have you already tried to reinstall the operating system? It could be the software problem.

If you still want to check your drive HARD uses a disk HARD Drive Fitness Test as a diagnostic tool. It s freeware so you can find it if you search on Google.

  • Pavilion 15-n070sw: is it possible to upgrade a hard drive in this model?

    Hello

I have a Pavilion 15-n070sw (no longer under warranty) and was wondering about upgrading my drive ssd hard drive. However I noticed some users report problems of compatibility between this model and ssd drive (+ there is no option to set the AHCI mode in the BIOS settings...). Because I don't want to invest in a reader, that I won't be able to use, I wanted to check here - this model will support an SSD?

Thank you very much in advance for clearing that for me!

    M

Yes it will absolutely accept an SSD. There is no need to mess with the BIOS as the definition of only for storage controller's ahci. Could not set it to something else if you want. Windows 7 and above will simply TRIM and NCQ which is what you need for the optimization of the SSD. A lot of tutorials out there comes from another era, when it was harder to get a job of SSD. Here is the Service Manual:

    Manual

Pages 63-70 are the 'how' to remove the top cover and replace the hard drive with a 2.5-inch SSD SATA. I can recommend a Samsung 850 Evo as best consumer SSD, but many others is good and you can shop for an agreement.

The trick to that prepared in advance how you reinstall Windows clean install from a Windows system image backup or clone. All are viable options, but have their own procedures and pitfalls. We can help with that.

    I don't know what you're asking.

Are you saying that you have an XP Pro installation CD and want to use it to reinstall Windows on the spare drive Toshiba?

If so, yes it works, Windows does not care what kind of drive you have (also long has enough space).

  • Is it possible to move a hard drive between a newly built computer that currently has no hard drive.

The old computer was a Dell 8200 demension.  It is the power supply is dead and its processor was 8 years, so I decided to build a new.  I have a backup of the system on a USB hard drive. I have also all my important files backed up.  I realize that the old HD and his backup, both, all dell settings and drivers.  I'm not trying to circumvent the licensing rules.  I'm willing to pay Microsoft.  Should I buy a new drive with XP SP3 pro/c.  I hesitate to switch windows 7 yet.
    Thanks for any info.

You must buy a new XP Pro and install it on the new computer. Transfer your data from the old disk to the new. You can then format the old drive and use it for extra storage if you wish. MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic!

  • Is it possible to upgrade memory hard drive?

I'm just trying to see if I can move on to more memory on the hard drive of my computer or if I just need to go buy an external hard drive?

    Hi tnof77,

Hard disks have "cache" memory but thats all and it cannot be upgraded. While the cache is important, that the amount of space on the hard drive is the main point of Director. If you run out of space hard drive then, Yes, you need to either buy a hard drive more "internal" or, if you only need additional space for the files etc, an external hard drive.
